I love how the two most powerful beings in the Norse mythology visit kratos in his home, sit down politely, and passively aggressively drink mead together until the God of strength fights him in a phenomenal fight. I love how Thor and Odin's true characters are shown in this opening scene. Thor, despite arriving in intimidating fashion, asks permission to come in, brings a gift as an offering, is courteous towards their home, places his weapon on the table as a sign of peace, speaks calmly and pours everyone's mead like a respectable guest - even though he knows a fight could break out at any point. Then Odin, despite his kind old conciliator persona, arrives and walks in without invitation, immediately makes himself at home, drinks all the mead, speaks passive aggressively as he immediately starts bargaining like a sleazy salesman, makes veiled threats towards Kratos and Atreus, and provokes Thor into attacking Kratos.

Moments like this really show how incredibly hard Kratos is. He is FAR beyond intimidation. You cant size him up cause he has faced titans the size of mountains, and you cant intimidate him with power and/or rule because he single handedly brought down an entire pantheon. When the 2 most powerful norse gods show up at his door, he doesn't stand down in the slightest. He even looks Odin right in his face and denies him. I love how thor literally KILLED Kratos and brought him back for a good fight. Good stuff.
3:09 On a rewatch, you realize that by this point in the story Thor is trying to quit drinking. He gets annoyed at Kratos for refusing Atreus's drink because that means there's a spare cup to tempt him. Thor shows up to look intimidating and provide muscle for Odin, but throughout this entire scene he's probably just suffering from withdrawal and cranky about it

I noticed that the wound Kratos gave to Thor using the Leviathan Axe never fully healed in any of the subsequent appearances Thor makes after this fight. It's a cool little callback to the first game when Jormundgandr first imbues the axe with its venom, which is stated to be deadly against Thor and in historical texts is even described as being the venom that kills Thor during Ragnarok shortly after he kills the world serpent.

I just noticed, I believe Odin had Thor bring the mead to settle Kratos, knowing Thor was a recovering alcoholic who had promised his daughter he would never drink again. “You could have told me before I poured” - not just so the mead wasn’t wasted, but so that the temptation to drink was further removed. The way Thor smells the mead and puts it back shows how much he wants to enjoy the drink. Odin shows up, and instantly insults Thor’s 2 dead sons, and starts drinking right in front of him. If we knew about Thor’s drinking problem before he arrived at Kratos’ house, it would have helped build a picture of Odin’s nature straight away. Callous, calculating, lacking empathy and entirely selfish, whilst attempting to appear as the opposite in every sense.

After clearing the game and seeing most of dialogues, I believe Thor was angry with Kratos for holding back, as Thor lowkey wanted to die, but in Norse Mythology if you don't die in glorious battle you don't go to Valhalla, you're a disgrace, Thor wanted someone to die, which is why in their second fight when Kratos submits him, he is like "What the fuck are you waiting for?" Thor without knowing was tired of Odin's BS and wanted to have some peace, even if it meant dying.
This fight was an absolute masterpiece.Well the first one,but the second fight was either easy or dissaponting.

Kratos didn't even know that his wife could hold her own against Thor; it's why he asks Thor to clarify.
