Have no idea what your goals are or where to even start?
Don’t worry; you will by the end of the episode.
You’ll apply the latest research every single step of the way.
And that’s not all.
You can access a free companion workbook at melrobbins.com/goals that will walk you through everything we’re talking about so you can go even deeper into this conversation.

I have been a writer all my life... A writer who no longer writes. I barely got started. Perfectionism paralyzed me. Stress sapped my strength. Misfortunes crushed my hope. I have always been an artist, a creator... Who no longer creates. My dream in 2023 is to begin creating again. Imperfectly. My goal is to start writing regularly. 2 - 5 x a week. Comparing myself to no one except the person I was yesterday. The writer who did not write. If I write today, whatever it is, I know it will be better than yesterday.

My biggest goal is to make sure my mother gets everything she wants out of life for everything she sacrificed in life to give all of us a better life. And to make sure she's proud of me and really just continue to give her everything l couldn't before because that honestly make life worth it even more. No matter how old l get or gf or wife l do ever get she will always come first. She's my heartbeat and the reason l keep going. Thank you mom l know you'll never see this but in her heart l hope she feels this.

I love you. My support system is wonderful. It sounds boastful that everyone I know thinks I am perfect and that I have “paid my dues” and can just take it easy in my 80 plus years. How utterly unrewarding is that scenario. You, Mel, remind me that having goals and purpose is what gives life that intangible quality that makes each day an adventure. Thank you for caring for all of us. ❤

I’m hearing this at the perfect time. I’m home sick from work with RSV. Then my back went out and I’m literally physically paralyzed and in pain. I’m in a corporate job earning less than I should, 2% annual increases , working at a junior job with senior level responsibilities and they will not promote me. I face each day filled with regret shame and angst that my future is in “their” hands. I took the job 9 years ago when my kids were little and needed the income. I still need the income and know my worth. I have a gift. I’ve been playing small and have silenced myself to survive. I’m on my living room floor with my back frozen and my throat silenced. This might be the greatest realization day of my life. This is no accident. Ps- I’m 58😅

It was 2021 when I first watched a vlog of a famous author of which Mel Robbins was a guest. I don't remember the topic, though. But I am glad the KZread algorithm lead me to her channel which definitely give me another chance to relive the incredible encounter I had with Mel even by just watching her science-backed talks. I may not have vividly remembered back then but all I could recall was her advising the people to embrace imperfections, especially in goal setting. When we get overwhelmed with a goal, it is easier to procrastinate, thus become a victim of false confidence.

I have some very big goals I want to achieve by this time next year. One is getting out of debt so I can get a better apartment that allows pets (I'm the crazy cat lady with no cats). There is a life coach that I absolutely LOVE named Macie Renae. She talks about how our circumstances are a product of our thinking. I love that. In order to change our future, we must change our present. And I love this video you made! Sometimes my brain gets overwhelmed at all the changes I want to make. My mind gets foggy. I know what I want. I just need the steps to get there and YOU nailed it perfectly for me. Setting goals will certainty help me to achieve my dreams ❤ thank you for making this, Mel!

7:20 I am working on my healing my brain, finally leaving my narcissistic psychotic husband, didn’t leave until I couldn’t walk or stand anymore (advanced MS). I made a vow and didn’t want to break it, had my daddy come get me. Never looked back, stayed too long because I couldn’t leave my dog (accidentally therapy dog). Now I’m walking, working on learning to drive again (it’s been 5 years). Working on my book, “How My (M) Sclerosis (S) Saved my life” I looked at what really makes me happy- nature photography, and writing. It’s easy for me if it’s just doing what I love!

Hey Mel, I'm sure you don't have the time to read all these comments! I just want to let you know that when you said the following: when you achieve your goal then the victory is short-lived. That is so true! I started going through in my head every time I climb to a top of a big hike, renovated my kitchen, finished a course, and the list goes on. I thought I would feel great and I did but only for a day or two. The chasing of the goal is the key. I never thought about it that way but now that I know that; things are going to change for me! Thank you for the excellent content and all your words of wisdom.💜

Many moons ago, I thought once I reached my goal, my life would be perfect and everything would just fall into place-NOT! Also, reaching one’s goal is not going to give one eternal happiness-one is going to reach the goal and feel proud- that is the accomplishment. Expecting more than this, is not reality. I think most people have an inflated view of goals. Once they reach their goal and it is not everything that they expected, they go back to their old ways and habits. I think most people are looking for a constant drip of happiness and daily life is not like that. Daily life ebbs and flows, has its peaks and lows. I believe we all can change our own life, but not life itself. We all must accept life as it is and realize we don’t have the power to change anyone around us either. Mel, good luck with your seed garden. Big tip- buy quality seeds and excellent soil. You must treat it like a baby and then don’t be surprised if the caterpillars and plant pests start to attack. Of course, watering is key and ALOT of PATIENCE!! I had to switch to tried and true flowering plants. I don’t seem to get the finished product that the package displays. Usually much smaller and not as plentiful. I realized that the plant nursery business is a billion dollar industry with chemist so I should bring my expectations down. As far as trees, that is better but it is easy to buy the tree, but hard to get a male in the family to dig the hole needed. Say goodbye to pretty nails and wear knee high boots as it seems that soil always finds its way into the inside of shoes!!! If you do get some jewels blooming, please share as there is nothing prettier than a gorgeous fresh flower from one’s garden!😊🌹🌸🌺🌷🌻🌼💐 P.S. I hope you don’t lush out on the 76th day!!!

Do you realize that you manifested everything coming to fruition in your life now after your most recent move to your new house? Even down to the gardening in that ladies grove of flowers that spoke to you encouraging you to reach out to her and then went there to get what you wanted but also showed up in a time if need for another (the owner of the grove of flowers)... Mel your amazing and all of these things are working similarly in my life. Hi Mel, my name is Mardell. I’ve been watching your determining your dream videos along with your goal setting. You can’t even imagine how much you have helped me. Not only have I defined my dreams defined and then redefined and then redefined my goals, found the will found the why, or the way, I believe I know how to achieve them now. So after your video, I am doing that one tiny thing right now.. my goal is to start a business on KZread. I’ve been researching and researching and researching but through your tutelage. I have learned to break these steps into smaller goals to achieve what I want. I want to thank you and I want you to know that this is my tiny thing now, and I will be watching you probably for the rest of my life.. I don’t need luck, because I am blessed, but I also have a great teacher now in you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and bless you.

Thanks Mel, thanks for clarifying the purpose, of goal setting is less the achievement, but more the purpose in life those goals give you. Giving yourself direction and purpose is totally what I was ignoring with my goals. I was that person only focussing on the how than the why.

Mel this is a great discussion and insightful giving regarding how you are setting your personal goals. When you go to events, seek out others that don't drink but are holding cocktails glasses, engaging will give you all such joy at the functions. 1.learn to be an amazing cook, for myself - identify mental/physical road blocks and remove them. 2. tend to property by or before 7am each day , a little here a little there each day toward improvement = sleep earlier. 3. Stay out of isolation that can go with rural lifestyle, perpetual nesting is just that perpetual. List of actions 1/2 hr perday.

Mel, am thrilled to hear that will be investing in things that will bring you some happiness. You are a wonderfully generous teacher, but I fear you run without rest. Time to grab some joy for yourself. I love how you've turned your radical honestly on yourself. This show is like watching a beautiful flower bloom. You are growing fields of flowers out here too.

I quit drinking 30 years ago. One day at a time adds up. Start by putting a number on your high-five in the mirror. Day 1, high five, next day Day 2, high five. You go girl. You will feel so much better. God promises. Ok, my goal nutrition….

Thank you for the tips, I am putting these into practice. I had to comment just to say that I love dahlias too and also had a goal of growing some - and I did! For one season, I had one gorgeous dahlia plant and it was fantastic. Others I planted did not make it, and I did not successfully save the tubers so I didn't get to replant it. But I may need to try again, it was beautiful. Time for a new goal!
