Lyrics
These are the days of the open hand
They will not be the last
Look around now
These are the days of the beggars and the choosers
This is the year of the hungry man
Whose place is in the past
Hand in hand with ignorance
And legitimate excuses
The rich declare themselves poor
And most of us are not sure
If we have too much
But we'll take our chances
Because god's stopped keeping score
I guess somewhere along the way
He must have let us alt out to play
Turned his back and all god's children
Crept out the back door
And it's hard to love, there's so much to hate
Hanging on to hope
When there is no hope to speak of
And the wounded skies above say it's much too late
Well maybe we should all be praying for time
These are the days of the empty hand
Oh you hold on to what you can
And charity is a coat you wear twice a year
This is the year of the guilty man
Your television takes a stand
And you find that what was over there is over here
So you scream from behind your door
Say "what's mine is mine and not yours"
I may have too much but i'll take my chances
Because god's stopped keeping score
And you cling to the things they sold you
Did you cover your eyes when they told you
That he can't come back
Beacuse he has no children to come back for
It's hard to love there's so much to hate
Hanging on to hope when there is no hope to speak of
And the wounded skies above say it's much too late
So maybe we should all be praying for time

What a genius this man was. This song was released almost 25 years ago. Yet the lyrics are playing out in real time today. Men and women are lovers of themselves. “The rich declare themselves poor, and most of us aren’t sure if we have too much. But, we’ll take the chance cause Gods stopped keeping score”. You cling to the things that they sold you, did you cover your eyes when they told you that he can’t comeback, cause he has no children to come back for”. Such relevant lyrics. We have turned our backs on God and we have no one to thank but ourselves. George was right. Maybe we should all be praying for time. George’s time was cut short and he was taken too soon. Don’t make the same mistake. Thanks for the music, George. You are sorely missed.

In The New York Times September 16, 1990, George Michael is quoted regarding this song: "No event inspired the song. It's my way of trying to figure out why it's so hard for people to be good to each other. I believe the problem is conditional as opposed to being something inherent in mankind. The media has affected everybody's consciousness much more than most people will admit. Because of the media, the way the world is perceived is as a place where resources and time are running out. We're taught that you have to grab what you can before it's gone. It's almost as if there isn't time for compassion."

@@HALFSQUASHED I TOTALLY agree with the sentiment, but there are some considerations to be had. USA for Africa's - We are the World (1985), Prince's - Sign o' the Times (1987), this song [George Michael's - Praying for Time (1990)], Michael Jackson's - Heal the World (1992), and Judy Kuhn's - Colors of the Wind (1995 - from the Pocahontas OST) were all recorded in the same 10 year span, and there are several others. There are quite a few in each area, including the modern era, but they are, indeed, far and few between and growing more scarce. There are plenty of talented writers today, (e.g. Adele, John Legend, even Justin Beiber with songs like "Intentions"), and a lot of independent artists still write highly artistic songs with important lyrics. A big part of it is that the blockbuster hit record has become more subject to the will of corporate financial interest, while more meaningful music is more sparsely distributed across isolated niches, vis-à-vis Anderson's Long Tail. But fear not, there's still hope my friend!

Greg Winston A country declaring war on the world as in WII or the two most powerful and weaponized nations in history staring each other down as in the Cold War is not the same thing as the 'war on terror'. The world has become a lot smaller in the last 100 years and people living in extreme poverty and oppression look at the opulence and riches the US and other Western nations, portrayed through movies and TV and go why the fuck are we living like this and some of them get mad and attack the people with the money and power because they have nothing left to lose and we aren't listening to their cries for help. ISI is not a country they are rebels, yes they are extremely fucked up rebels but there are reason they have power and do the terrorist things they do is because they represent the desperate people of the world saying help us. Hitler came to power because German was in a similar state as a lot of Islamic countries find themselves in today the difference is, we, the Western rich, have the resources to help these people but we would rather keep it to ourselves, until we do bread another Hitler, only this time he will have weapons of mass destruction. War is not going to prevent this, war is going to encourage this. There is only one way to stop terrorism and that is to address the issues that bread terrorism, not bomb, shoot, torture, humiliate and terrorise people.

I'd love to have met him, for a moment or two. What a guy. I'm pretty sure there are some peoples who did meet him, and have cherished stories. I won a trip to see him in concert in Chicago (I'm in Denver) in my early 20's in 1987. He has always been my favorite artist and I became an authentic Christian much later in life. Revelation 14:13 (Jesus speaking from the Throne in Heaven) “And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this down: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they are blessed indeed, for they will rest from their hard work; for their good deeds follow them!”” ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭14:13‬ ‭NLT‬‬ bible.com/116/rev.14.13.nlt Wow! So powerful and truly amazing! God's Word is light and life to those who read it and abide by it. Revelation 14:13 proclaims that once you give your life to Jesus, and have died and gone to heaven, your "deeds" will follow you -!!! George Michael gave so much money 💰 millions and millions to cancer charity's , children's charity's and many others. He always chose to remain an anonymous giver. His reward is now in heaven. I prayed for George for years to give his life to Christ and repent of his sin. God bless you George I love you forever ❤️
