Lyrics
Like a warrior that fights
And wins the battle
I know the taste of victory
Though I went through some nights
Consumed by shadows
I was crippled emotionally
Somehow I made it through the heartache
Yes I did. I escaped.
I found my way out of the darkness
I kept my faith (I know you did), kept my faith
When the river was deep I didn't falter
When the mountain was high I still believed
When the valley was low it didn't stop me, no no
I knew you were waiting.
I knew you were waiting for me
With an endless desire
I kept on searching
Sure in time our eyes would meet
Like the bridge is on fire
The hurt is over,
One touch and you set me free
No, I don't regret a single moment,
No, I don't (I know you don't) looking back
When I think of all those disappointments
I just laugh (I know you do), I just laugh
When the river was deep I didn't falter
When the mountain was high I still believed
When the valley was low it didn't stop me
I knew you were waiting.
I knew you were waiting for me
So we were drawn together through destiny (oh, boy)
I know this love we shared was meant to be
I knew you were waiting,
Knew you were waiting
I knew you were waiting,
Knew you were waiting for me
I didn't falter
I still believed
When the valley was low it didn't stop me
I knew you were waiting.
I knew you were waiting for me
I didn't falter
When the mountain was high I still believed
When the valley was low it didn't stop me
I knew you were waiting.
I knew you were waiting for me

Both of their deaths hit me pretty hard. It is never easy losing your music heroes because there's such a big part of your life. This masterpiece and this duet is one of the greatest to ever be recorded by two of the most iconic voices in music history. Their legacy and this song will outlive us all. Maybe both continue to rest in peace.❤
To those who think this is a love song - it is to GOD - Aretha and George proclaiming their faith in plain sight: When the river was deep I didn't falter When the mountain was high I still believed When the valley was low it didn't stop me, no no I knew you were waiting. I knew you were waiting for me May they rest in peace and rise in glory.

You know what feels great? Singing this song to yourself when after a long period of depression and being lost within yourself you find your way back to the one person you need in life. You. Welcome home my darling.
Look...I remember when this song came out. I was 23 years old and I knew this was 🔥 back then. I'm watching this video 35 years later and the gravity of this situation is hitting me hard. Back then, these were two _highly_ respected singers in their respective genres with only tenure separating them. Aretha earned her crown decades before, and George was the relative new kid, but his talent out-distanced his years. At the time, it was an unexpected pairing, but it only took one listen to realize this was something very special. It's music like this that makes me miss the '80s so much...

I agree 💯 percent with you Freewarrior2 no doubt about it!!! My name is also Aretha I 'm from Bunn NC Aretha Franklin was my mother's favorite idol in her teenage years 😀!!! So in 1963 when she was pregnant with her first born child, she named me Aretha Regina Chamblee. At the time she had not married yet!!!! The man she married was a sorry excuse for a step-father to me. He treated me like shit, now he's six feet under, died from cancer 😠!!!! But my mom is a breast cancer survivor and she is 78 years old.🙌 Praise God for having her in my life this long!!! I have two half siblings, they are his and are grown now!! My father died in Zebulon NC at his home at the age of 58 years old. I was his only child, and he loved me I miss him so much 😢😢💔. But he's in my heart every day in spirit 👼💔 peace out for now ok, Freewarrior2, from Aretha White from Bunn NC!!!✌✌✌✌👍👍

An up-and-coming legend singing with a Living legend. I know George was honored to sing with Aretha. Like many, he said that he was inspired by early MOTOWN artists.
What a beautifully sang song. Aretha Franklin sang this song with almost no effort at all and hit some great tones, and George Michael did a great job keeping up with his great vocals. This is definitely an underrated duet.

Aretha looks beautiful in this video - healthy, happy, and vibrant. Just stunning. And George was always breathtakingly beautiful, inside and out. I really can't think of too many other men of the time that could have held their own with ReRe like he did. And his vocal maturity is well beyond his 23 years. He makes his own mark in the song, but he compliments her. He never tries to outshine her. It's brilliance. The world is a darker place without these two souls, but heaven is a lot more soulful!

Agreed. Years ago I used to run into the producer of this song from time to time. (Narada Michael Walden) One time I asked him about the recording. He said George was pretty nervous about singing with Aretha. And she was aware and did not just want to blow away the poor young guy with her vocals. Narada said when he got his desired vocals from George he kept wanting to do it again. Narada had to convince him that everything was fine he had gotten what he wanted. And that was a fact because it turned out beautifully!
