Michalis Prodromou It's hard for me to find an international example of a business who is stuck in the middle. A stuck in the middle position happens when a business designed to be low cost starts adding little extra's which don’t add an even amount to the customer value of a product or service. The business suffers the costs, the customer doesn’t get the benefit. Or when a differentiated business comes under pressure on prices - perhaps there has been a market disruption from new technology or an ultra low priced competitor from overseas - and starts cutting costs in areas which damage the differentiation advantage. Try to find an example of a company in your region or country who is, or has been in such a situation. Good luck!

Ryanair, arguably, adopted the Cost Focus Strategy and not the Cost Leadership. They aviation industry was huge already when Ryanair decided to enter the market; then it founded the niche in the European market for the low-cost airlines; especially after the European Union has expanded so abruptly in 2004 And also, Porter's argument about being 'stuck in the middle' is very controversial, as some argues that you can actually be a cost focused company but delivering products or services with desirable benefits if those cost no extras... And companies like IKEA or UNIQLO are doing pretty well when at the same time being 'stuck in the middle'...

Thanks Adam for your contribution. In my example I more or less try to explain in extreme examples the difference between cost leadership and differentiation at first. After these examples I explain what focussing means with niche examples. To call the European market a 'niche market' (where you can focus on) goes a little bit far... As Porter mentions in his books, a niche market is more like a specific target group (e.g. skaters, single moms, or in this case, Extreme luxery for captains of the industry only). So cost leadership (broad market) suits this example I think. Concerning your stuck in the middle comment, I totally agree with you as I mention in my video at 6:00min (did you watch it till the end?). There are companies like Ikea who do very well by being stuck in the middle. Though, Ikea is more an operational excellent company in T&W's example rather than being cost leader... (see my other video). That's why it's good there are more sustainable competitive advantage strategies we can choose from. I always try to stick with the original source, but in this case we are definitely overtaken by time. Again, thanks for your critical contribution!

Dear Pepijn, Can I ask something about Competitive Advantages, if I'm a Mathematics Student. 1) Calculator/Pen = Tangible resource, Knowledge of Math = Intangible resource. 2) My Math understanding(no matter the answer is right or wrong) = Capability. 3) My accurate and speed = Core Competencies. 4) My accurate and speed compare with other student are better = Competitive Advantage. 5) And I don't know what is Distinctive Competencies in my sample. Would you like to give me some advice, because I don't really understand what is "Distinctive Competencies". Thanks a lot and thanks for your time. Ace.
