GEAR HUNTING Issue FIXED on the 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I’m this video I talk through the gear hunting transmission issue on the 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro… does it still exist on the 2022 model year? Yes.
For those of you who have fixed this issue, what route did you take? Re-gearing? OV (Orange Virus) tune?
Wish this Tacoma came with the 4.0L V6 5spd Auto transmission you find in the 5th Gen 4Runner TRD Pro…
What are your thoughts? Thanks for watching as always.

I did the KDMax tune on my 17 Tacoma TRD Pro. Night and Day difference. I opted for the "most sensitive response" style tune. Fixed all the throttle issues and the shifting issues! Zero problems at the dealership for warranty and or work! Will do the newest version when I trade up for my 22 TRD Pro Electric Lime in 4-6 wks when it arrives!

@Wild Warg I go to the dealership for oil changes and tire rotations, etc. and it has never been an issue when they're resetting services. Should the dealership ever need to do a reset or anything major, KD Max will provide a retune! IMO it's practically unnoticeable when at the dealership unless you're dealing with a major electronic issue of some kind! As I mentioned, I'm happily getting my new 22 TRD Pro done immediately without worry. I like the benefits in throttle response, shifting and 1-2 MPG's. I have a full bed shell and tow a 24ft boat regularly. I always set the cruise at 80 mph when traveling and I always get 20 MPG's during my normal driving. I recommend it, but just MO!

I was just curious, how is the cabin noise? I noticed on the tundras underneath the hood there is insulation to keep the noise to a minimum. But the Tacoma does not have that insulation, when you accelerate how loud is it or is it still quiet?

Govt. EPA regulation on MPG that must be met. Toyota knew about this. They can fix the problem but for every action there is a reaction. MPG will drop considerably - they can't pass the EPA as well as no one would like to buy a gas guzzler especially these days.

Maybe Magnussen would give you a killer deal on a Supercharger? With the extra power that is also supposed to fix the Transmission issue. Of course it wouldn’t be worth it unless you wanted to keep the truck for awhile. Other option is to re-gear but that is also quite expensive. Thanks for the video. The one good thing about the 3.5L over the 4.0L is the improved fuel economy which is noticeable. Most Taco owners should be seeing a 4 or even up to 6 mpg difference with the 3.5L taking the win. I drive like a grandpa, all highway with little in the way of hills or turns and no stops 65 miles into town and I maintain 25.5 mpg in my 2023 Taco crew, 4x4. With that said, I agree with you on the reliability but then again this new one right out of the gate is nowhere near a good of quality in nearly every way, as my 3 previous Tacoma's (1995, 2003 and 2012). Quality has really gone down in recent years. So sad. I have inside info as to why the transmission hunts and it has to do with fuel economy. The Toyota engineers set it up that way on purpose and honestly, to mess with it could be asking for problems for a lot of reasons. Lastly, what you were saying about Taco vs 4Runner.... I could have gone 4runner but I felt I got super close to the same thing in my Taco as I would have in a 4Runner but for a good $8-$12k less money. So between the fuel economy savings and the purchase price I went Taco.

KDmax Pro tune definitely helps but gears are the solution. Just put 4.88 in my 21 OR A/T and no more hunting. I can even use the adaptive cruise without getting annoyed. Power improved on the low end and the truck stays in 6th gear on the highway even on inclines and passing. They are pricey at $2,700 vs $300 for the tune, but if you plan to keep the truck a long time it is a worthy investment. Since you change vehicles often gears may not be a good idea, but it is the ultimate "fix".

I don't think it's the transmission, the real problem is the Camry engine that has a terrible power curve for a "truck". The 3.5 makes all it's power high in the RPM range and does not make enough torque at lower rpms to hold higher gears. The 4.0 in the 4Runner has this problem as well.

Not even fixed in 2023. The transmission is geared for the EPA, not the consumer. Mine sucked when stock and sucks more after putting 33's on it. Will be doing 5.29 gears soon and a tune. That will get my mpg back and set me up in the future for 35's. I go off road every weekend. Great truck. Too much focus on meeting epa standards. I don't mind under 20 mpg in a gas truck. On a side note, I lock out 6th gear in manual mode. Actually matches my old 4Runner mpg and feels happier not slapping around for 5th and 6th

Didn't do a thing for me. 23 trd pro. Completely flat road, 80mph, and it was constantly hunting between 3 gears in a cyclic rhythm with cruise control on. Didn't matter what mode I put it in. Even tried manual shifting and it over rode my attempts.

@@mikemaes1006 yeah I've found 80mph to be too slow for 6th gear with the wind resistance. I get better gas mileage going 85-90mph than I do going 80mph, and it'll hold 6th gear without hunting as long as it's flat and no headwind lol. Otherwise the fastest I can go without it hunting is like 72mph.

I drive my 2020 OR in S-mode 95% of the time, especially in town. For most local driving I lock out overdrive and even fourth gear on occasions when creeping through 25 and 30 mph zones. Agreed that gear hunting on the highway can be a little annoying and depending on traffic, weather (wind) and grade it can be distracting at times. I have considered the Pedal Commander for a fix but I don't drive enough (6k-ish miles / year) for me to fall in hate w/ the transmission. Love the Electric Lime!
