BUY the 3rd Generation TOYOTA TACOMA while you still can… Best Resale Value moving forward?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this video I talk through the expected resale value of the current 3rd generation Toyota Tacoma. Specifically, the Tacoma TRD Pro. Should you buy one before the next 4th generation hits the lots? I don’t know.
It’s never a bad idea to buy the last model year of a generation, especially the TRD Pro trim in the exclusive color. Which we know Solar Octane will be it. You can’t go wrong. BUT! Will this current Toyota Tacoma become the most desirable in future years? Not a chance. The lackluster 3.5L V6 tied to the trigger happy 6spd automatic transmission makes it’s a real drag to drive. It’s “wow factor” isn’t there when it comes ti driving. Sure it’s reliable… but that doesn’t cut it.
What are your thoughts? Will you be waiting for the next 4 cylinder turbo Tacoma? If so, why?
Thanks for watching as always!

“Do you think this Tacoma will be the most sought after?” Not in that Booger Green color it won’t be 😂🤣
Great video as always
The things I love about the Tacomas are they are great yard work trucks and awesome for snowy drives. It’s hard to put sticks and rocks in an suv.
You’re absolutely right and everything you said I believe the new four-cylinder turbo charger probably have more power and be much peppier but it won’t have the longevity
Your a true auto enthusiast man 👍
I agree. Horrible transmission for the money.Sold my 2004 Tacoma for a 2017 Tacoma and regretted it. Bought a 2017 4Runner and now very happy.

The only Tacoma that’s going to be sought after 5,15,20-30 years down the road is the 6 speed manual tranny. The gearing is perfect, no gear searching and enthusiasts will be paying premium for them.

I love my 2018 manual Tacoma . Only con is when I have taken it to the dealer for service no one knows how to drive it .
Tacoma is my preferred platform and planning to keep my 2022 Taco Pro for a long time. I was in a 1992 Toyota Pickup prior to getting this new truck. There’s always the option of putting the power chain of a 4runner into the 3rd gen Taco when it’s engine dies, I’m talking way down the road here.
Wao sooo beautiful Colour style ✨️ 😎 👌 Good review 👍 👏
Tune does wonders for this platform. I was ready to sell my 22 pro after a weekend trip over the mountains. Everything bad on road is what makes the truck shine offroad. OTT tune fixed the on road behavior and keeps the offroad capability. The engine has plenty of power. Just the wonky transmission tuning.
I did! 😁 2023 SR double cab 4x4. Already have $10k in mods (canopy, bumper, winch, lights, tube steps, tires, wheels, etc, etc) on and 2,300 miles. It's not the quality of the old Tacoma (my 1995, 2003 and 2012) but probably still better than most other options out there. Not happy with some unusual clunks, dirt imperfections under paint and an off center steering wheel but, that's post covid, Gen Z, built in Mexico for ya. I guess we have to get use to that, sadly.
I agree with most of what you said about the 4Runner. I do have to say though, i believe that the Tacoma TRD Pros with standard transmissions will be exceptions to what you were talking about. I'm really not sure how much longer they will keep the manual on life support. this might be one of the last few years. People are more worried about their infotainment centers and other bright flashy gimmicks than anything else.
The first gen Tacoma (95.5-04) is the tacoma to get. However, the new ones are still awesome. I’d get a manual one. Also, the 5rh gen 4runner will be a beast in the years to come for sure
There are many reasons these Tacoma’s are so popular despite some criticisms. I love my 2020 TRD 4X4 sport. Loved my 1992 4x4 Toyota truck when I bought it brand new and drove it for 14 years. Despite the 150hp 3.0L and leaky head gaskets. I like the T4R’s but my heart will always be with the truck. Strictly on the trucks, I think the ELM will become sought after for those enthusiasts who coveted the Pro’s. Especially if it’s a 6MT. There were not many produced. If one had to choose between the Taco Pro & the T4R Pro you could be right tho. The 3.5 and 6spd Auto is built proof. The ECU programming from the factory makes it shift odd to meet strict EPA & MPG ratings. Have an aftermarket tune installed like KDMax and it performs like it should from the factory. The 4th gen Tacoma will be getting a T4 cylinder to meet ever increasing EPA standards. One of the only reasons why Toyota had to do this.
I agree with everything you said. The Taco is awesome.. except for the power train. I own a 2019 and love it until you put larger tires on and god forbid you want to tow or haul with it at highway speed.
As an owner of an 07 V8 4Runner, I don’t think I will ever upgrade to a newer Tacoma or 4Runner. They may look like beautiful machines but i’ve only heard bad things about them. If I really wanted to I easily could upgrade to a newer model but I just don’t see myself wanting less power and most likely less reliability compared to the engine and trans in my car. My next door neighbor has a 21 tacoma and absolutely despises it because of how sluggish it is. On a side note, I told you last week that I was getting my windows blacked out and I finally did and couldn’t be happier with it. As everyone else says, it feels like I’m in my own little world in there!

I 💙 my 2019 tacoma trdpro voodoo blue w manual transmission. But I've considered getting a 4runner?
Don't know about the future interest in it, but today there's plenty of interest regardless of short comings. I use Sprint throttle booster, wouldn't be without it on my 2021. Combine it with ECT mode or shifting the automatic manually there's no lag, and you'll shave off one second of 0-60 time or better in booster race mode.
Just traded my 17th owned Toyota. A 2015 Tacoma (Last year of the 4.0) for a 2017 TRD pro tundra. Loved my Tacoma but missed the extra power and space with three kids. Mpg are extremely close in comparison. Having owned 3 Tundras a a sequoia platinum the 5.7 with the 6 speed can get 18mpg if you stay out if it. The Tacoma just needs an updated transmission since Nissan has paired a 9 speed with their frontier making it fairly competitive.

Yea the transmission leaves alot to be desired but if you hit the ECT button it drives and shifts like you want it to.
Mike sweers let us down on this one, Chikuo Kubota did way better on the previous generation. Then again, the epa was more relaxed then. Anyways, just looking at the 3rd gens I think the 2017 trd pros will be the most sought after because of the fact that its pre-TSS.

Untamed, did you have a rattling noise underneath your on your tundra trd pro when going on bumps at crawling speed? Please help a confused owner!
The first few years of the 4th gen tacoma...just like the first 2 years of the 3rd gen are going to have problems...even being a Toyota. I had a 2017 tacoma....and had to deal with the 2nd year production gremlins. If you are going to get a 4th generation Tacoma (2024?)....may want to wait for 3rd year of production.....which is a while away...2026. This gen tacoma has a few annoyances for sure...but pretty much everything that I am aware of has either been fixed by the factory or can be fixed in the aftermarket....then you'll get a relatively simple truck that should last 30 years
Got the '21 tacoma pro which was the last year they made the pro in San Antonio. Its not going anywhere for a while
I believe once they add more technology to the new generation Tacoma we will look back at this current generation and miss its simplicity.

It’s the one thing to complain about but it’s still the best selling midsize by a landslide. All the other companies have way newer platforms with their latest and best in their midsize trucks and still doesn’t come close to tacoma sales. It will be sought after even when the 4th gen comes out. Imo Toyota absolutely killed the game by nailing it with the 5th gen 4runner along with the 3rd gen tacoma. 2 of the best overlanding/off roaders you can buy along with the wrangler. The bronco is still too new to add to that list since the others have been on the trails for years and years consistently and have built amazing reputations and fan bases. This tacoma will be absolutely still high value and sought after when the 3rd gen is done and will go down as a classic along with the 5th gen 4runner and fj cruiser. Years later we will be talking about these 3 models like we do with the classic land cruisers.

I own 1st gen with 206K miles and the rear drums are still original factory shoes.
I would consider putting a tune on this truck. I haven't heard of reliability issues from the tune and the drivability is supposed to increase dramatically. The stock tune on this truck is unacceptable, especially being this late in production. As for Japan vs Mexico. The 4Runner definitely has clout for being built in Japan. I may have had bad luck, but the last two Japanese built cars have been rattle boxes (Prius and WRX), not really sure what is going on there (Prius, the WRX is notorious for being a rattle box). Finally, I think some of the previous model Tundra buyers are hating themselves when they get to the pump... As for the reliability of the new one. I chalk most of it up to first year model woes. The Tacomas had reliability issues in the beginning and they seemed to have been ironed out. That is one thing I like about Toyota, and that is they usually work the reliability issues pretty quick. Anyways, great channel! I really like seeing all the cool trucks you get.

I don't think you can really lose on a Pro Tacoma or 4Runner. Also anyone who gets into the Mexico vs USA arguments for build quality are insane. They think Toyota is going to let there be an appreciative difference in their Tacomas?
Well I have the same truck as you and don't really have a problem with the engine/trans. Could it be better, of course; but I really like this truck. Get a lot of complements on the truck, especially the color (electric lime metallic). Having said all that, I'm keeping mine for a minute. How do the 2015 Gen 2 Tacoma's do on the secondary market? Being that the 2015 is the last of its kind. Is there a premium on them that I should know about before selling my 2015?
Never putting big tires on my Tacoma! It just doesn’t need it!
I am wondering resale value in the future. We're in a weird moment where the market is trying to price these vehicles. Given the loom of recession, gas prices, newer models out performing the tacoma, it's not surprising why (while still #1 in mid size sales) sales are down 20%. I think its a great car--if you're lucky to get an allocation then I agree send it! However a 70k truck on the grey market... with drum brakes... let's not kid ourselves here.

I currently own a ‘21 4runner and have also owned a 3rd Gen Tacoma. I agree with the Japan build completely. I would not say overall reliability is better, it’s more the attention to detail.
Just get it tuned with KD Max 9.0. You will not be disappointed.
SoCal is oversaturated with Tacomas. I imagine it is the same everywhere else. That to me suggests that Tacomas won’t yield anywhere near as good a return as the 4Runner. Everyone loves the 4Runner, and there are not a whole lot of them on the road (probably because they all have to come from Japan).

4.0L shreds. Total torquey hotrod. Love my 4.0L DCLB
2nd gen. 4.0L. More spacious inside. DCLB. Big power. Big torque. Great shifting. Tough. Not a girly truck like the 3rd gen.
Hallelujah!! The solution to more mileage is a turbo--👎-I agree it will definitely affect the longevity, maintenance costs & parts will double, if not triple based on usage. I wish they would create a public transportation system (trains, buses, etc.) to solve our nationwide issue that could solve unemployment because we could have jobs from custodians to maintenance technicians to engineers and everything in between. That would allow car manufacturers to not have to put turbos in a smaller motor per say. Being stationed overseas allowed me to value public transportation as a luxury for getting around relatively easy & comfortable yet still have the option to rent a powerful reliable vehicle when need be and or share a vehicle with a loved one and or family members.
i dunno man i think it comes down to if you're a truck or suv person. Hot take: After finally getting into a 4runner and taking it for a spin out of curiosity for how it felt compared to my taco, i never felt that wow factor. Its definitely got more comfort and space but asides from that the 4.0 was pretty underwhelming in my opinion. Definitely smoother than the 3.5 but barely. If anything it felt a lot 'mushier' than the taco. As far as the build quality goes, they felt pretty identical. Both had their little squeaks here and there, both had the same grade of hard plastics whereas the 4R had more leather on the interior and some faux premium materials. Asides from the Tacoma's go-kart style seating position the seats felt almost identical too, not sure if the same leather is used in both. Its pretty clear the 4R is geared to more passenger comfort but you'd think the differences would be larger given the price delta between both vehicles. That being said both feel very toyota: durable, solid and slow as hell. If it were my money id personally hold on to the tacoma since it just feels sportier and more fun to drive, 4runner definitely if there was a family
40th Anniversary 4Runner TRD Pro? Bye Tacoma!
The 3rd gen Tacoma is a bad truck. Plain and simple. Uncomfortable seating position, low payload numbers, mismatched tuning and gearing, and a weak frame. It's only saving grace is the nameplate, above average reliability, and aftermarket support. Off road it's no better than the Ford Ranger and GM twins. Those platforms also perform well and the ZR2 spanks it. Toyota better bring their A game with the 4th gen Tacoma because I'm telling you the new Ranger and GM twins are going to be fantastic trucks.
no
Gear hunting, lack of power and mpg 👎🏻
Way over over priced... these trucks even though I own 2017 trd offroad 2 wheel drive the greed of dealerships I refuse to ever buy any other tacoma down the road, I have seen where things have been taken away on tacomas but as I said they keep pushing the price up they are making these trucks as other vehicles unaffordable & them who are buying them at these higher prices I would believe many are being repoed paying 55k$+ is a joke...
