I love it small and tender, too. I love it raw. Of course, some get away from me. I think some get away from anyone who grows okra. I either save those for seed or I scrap out the inside for sautee or soup. I tried to eat just the inside and it's not bad, but kind of a bit of work. Love okra!

@@yeevita large okra are still usable as you said. Some you can cut the end of and the rest is still tender enough to cook regular. My personal favorite is fried whole or sauteed whole or bread, tried and eat it hot out the pan. Barely cool enough to eat. If I'm boiling I soak in milk to get the slime out.

My first big tomato, a Thorburn's Terracotta, ripened yesterday! We ate it plain, just sliced with salt & pepper, so we could savor every bite. Now summer is really here!

I love hummingbirds, last week, I had one fly within two and a half feet of my face, and pause hovering for at least six seconds. I'm not sure if it was curious, or startled 😂

🌻Everything's looking really good! I just can't believe how much you all have done in such a short amount of time! So, I have a pretty yucky, but amazing fix for your hornworm issue. I found out about this about 40 years ago and have used it when needed since with 100% effectiveness. What you do is gather a handful of hornworms and put into a jar and smash them (the yucky part). Then cover the jar and leave it for a few days to begin to rot. After a few days add water (may need to put into a larger container) and spray this all over your tomatoes. It 100% deters any further problems, though with your large area you may need to repeat another time. Anyway, wanted to pass this along and wish you well as you continue your beautiful garden endeavors.

Wait, wait, wait... hornworms glow under blacklight??? My heart is so happy with this nugget of insight. Those wicked little suckers have been the cause of many many (inexplicable to my husband) tears and a significant level of stubborn determination to eventually succeed. This is why you are my hero!

That was so funny when you stopped mid-stream and went, "humming bird", it reminded me of a rare child-free trip with a friend and as we drove up to a passing train she excitedly pointed to it shouting, "ooo, chuffa chuffa train!!!" . So funny!

18:00 Thank you so much for explaining how tomatoes ripen. I've heard the no refrigeration rule for years and had no idea why. It is so much easier for me to follow the rules when I know the reason behind them.

Yes we must steward the earth well and focus win stewarding the next generation. Working on teaching my children what really matters in life. Sad that it has been 110 plus degrees here the last few days it has my garden yellowing and some is making it while others parts it isn't. But I keep planting and praying that I can harvest something. We went to a you pick it place to get boxes of tomatoes to make homemade spaghetti sauce and more since my tomatoes are a bust again! Im not loosing hope.

I feel you on this. My tomatoes are struggling this year with the heat and no rain. I got burned last year starting plants too early and they froze in the winter storm when we lost power. I didn't start them early this year and they weren't able to grow big enough before it got too hot. I've seen some videos on how to protect plants if they get put outside too early. I think Cali Kim, Gary Pilarchik (Rusted Garden), and You Can't Eat the Grass have some good videos on starting plants when you don't have a greenhouse but it's too cold for them to be outside at night or unprotected.

I bought my first seeds yesterday. I even started some cucumbers and summer squash. I think I can finish them even though it’s late. Thanks for the inspiration! Next year I’m doing more.

My little squirrel getting my tomatoes is my 5 year old Benny 🤣 I always loved that we both have a Ben that loves gardening and tomatoes 🍅❤️

The hydrangeas will really stand out near the greenhouse.. Love the dwarf fruit tree idea.. Climbing roses on arbors make great shaded seating areas too...

I threw out some watermelon seeds that got wet and looked molded and wouldn't you know some grew so I have some full size melons out there too . I don't know what kind they are but we will see if they get full grown . My grandbaby loves to go worm hunting at night . She is so cute .

We had broccoli coming to a head in the spring when I planted my tomatoes and I had read that those two things were not good to plant next to each other but did it anyway. We had the most beautiful, big broccoli heads I have ever grown and the tomatoes are looking as good as always! I agree that the "do and do not" Pinterest planting "guides" should be taken with a grain of salt!

Thank you also for tasting plants that we probably have never tasted and describing the taste and texture of the plant. I had a huge limelight at my new house, and after it bloomed, I cut it back a lot. I worried in June because it didn't rain, and had to water in the late part of the day, but finally in July it has rained hard six days out of eleven.

Your moment enjoying the okra in your garden is the number one thing I am longing for this year that I don't have a garden!!! I am so longing for it!!! I had just finally started to master growing okra in Longmont Co zone 5b I think. They were as prolific as I've ever had them last year. I can't wait to grow them again!!!

I did my senior bachelor’s degree report on Organic labeling. I was appalled at what I found, specifically when it came to “USDA Organic”. Beef and Dairy operations can be “USDA Organic” yet feed conventional grain and alfalfa if they can’t source organic within so many miles of their ranch. I live in central Cali which is dominated by conventional ag especially dairy. There is a company here that sells OMRI certified composted manure and when I asked them where they sourced the manure they said conventional dairy’s…. I continue to buy products that are labeled organic in the hopes that it’s a bit better but in reality unless we grow it ourselves or have a conversation with the farmer we really don’t know.

My vote for the high tunnel name: The Samaritan We just had a sermon on Luke 10:25-37 The priest and the Levite skirt past the hurt man, but the Samaritan, whom in that time Era was looked upon as "the bad guy"... was the one to help. You are showcasing to a world how not to give up, but to amend and heal.... and perhaps that is His purpose, just as he instilled in the so called "bad guy", to be the one to help and heal. Yep. The Samaritan. That's my pick ❤️

But I live in the desert and a lot of my yard is xeroscaped, it doesn't make me miss my old garden up north and the Midwest. The soil there smelled and looked so black and wonderful! It smelled like the beautiful earth that God originally gave us. 🙏🙏🌱🌱. I truly miss that. It's very hard to grow a good tomato here. We don't really have a spring. I can identify with the joy you expressed when seeing the hummingbird. We love them and have been feeding them for many years now, I'm sure we have whole families that return year after year to our feeders. I have 5 feeders and during the summer I have to refill them daily. The issues with what they feed or give our meat supply is horrible, that was one of the reasons that I stopped eating meat all together about 8 years ago. Have a wonderful time on your vacation, looking forward to seeing the garden changes when you return.

I saw this on another youtube channel. Last year we had a hornworm invasion that ruined our tomatoes. When I started researching how to handle this problem I came across this idea. Dig a hole for your tomato plant. Place 1/4 teas chewing tobacco in the hole - cover with a little dirt so your plant won't be touching it, plant your tomato and care for it as usual. The gardener who shared this tip said the tobacco makes the leaves have a taste that the worms don't like but it doesn't effect the flavor of the tomato. Don't know if this is true but we are having a huge crop of tomatoes this year. Thanks for the tips on pruning tomatoes - we were having rot but once I gave my plants a severe pruning we haven't had that problem again!

I think of it as a "Resolution Tunnel" because you're solving a problem or a "Forbearance Tunnel" because you're handling difficult a circumstance with grace and patience.

Hi Jess, absolutely love your transparency and your channel. I'm a professional gardener for clients with flower and shrub gardens. Regarding panicle hydrangeas, like the limelights, you will not need full sun in your zone. Part shade is better where it's really hot and sunny. (I'm in zone 5 Massachusetts and mine flower beautifully in part shade here.) Hydrangeas also like consistent moisture so I make sure each shrub gets 5 gallons of water (drip) a week for their first season. I use a 5 gallon bucket with a small hole (less than 1/8") on the side near the bottom. Fill it once a week and let it trickle water the shrub. Put a loose cover on the top of the bucket to keep detritus from clogging the hole or clogged holes will drive you crazy. BTW, I use this bucket watering system for all new shrubs and trees I plant. First season: 5 gal once a week until the ground freezes. 2d season: 5 gal every other week. We're currently in a drought so my 1st season trees are getting 10 gal a week. I've cut my showers to quick ones twice a week so I can water my new shrubs and trees.

Hey Jess! This is my first year growing produce. I've always been an ornamental gardener and as you mentioned in a video not long ago, I, too, ave felt an urgency to grow food for several years as well. I finally jumped in! I have 4 galvanized 8x4 raised beds and everything is doing so well. I am in Georgia, about 30 minutes south of Atlanta, so same zone as you and about the same dates for 1st and last frosts. I am harvesting loads of summer squash and prolific straigt neck squash, as well as bush pickle cucumbers, and today got my first contender green beans. I will have some Hale's best cabtaloupes ready in a couple weeks! To say I am stoked and feeling so blessed is an VAST understatement. I am feeling so accomplished, not taking anything for granted, and just have fallen in love with gardening all over again! I'm expanding into the ground in the fall! I have been so busy and didn't trellis my brandywine and delicious tomatoes before they got too large to put the cage around. Now, tomato cages are not a good option because they are beginning to lean over onto the ground and "vine". I've decided I'm not upset about that since I can layer it with garden staples to create more tops. What would be a good option for a trellis at this point? I have them planted in a pattern like this...•°• •°• in one long half of one bed; and another bed is similar with Romas but since they're determinate, I'm not having the same issue. In the middle of the bed I have a short PVC and vinyl lattice trellis to keep the watermelon on its own side. I'd love to hear your ideas! I absolutely love your channel, have ordered your book off of Amazon, and ordering the new one soon! Can't wait for the release!!

until a friend reminded me today, snacking on fresh from the garden peas in the middle of winter isnt 'normal' for most folks. thankfully here doenst get snow or much below freezing in winter so i can grow things all year with some precaution. growing ones on own food is so rewarding and so many people in the world are so diconnected from where our food comes from

I really like the idea of calling that high tunnel redemption . Hope, purpose and intention rolled into one. Love how lush your garden is and so amazed at your progress this year. I moved to my forever home 1 month ago. I have 3 garden spaces going and lots of composting started. I have a shorter season but I want to get as much done as possible so next year is much more lush and I can start adding livestock.

You garden/homestead is goals! I love watching your videos and one day dream of having my own little self-sufficient homestead. Thank you for doing these tours and educational videos. They’re so inspiring and great to watch.

I planted borage (first time) specifically to keep out the hornworms--last year, I lost most of my tomatoes to hornworms--hundreds! I have to say, I've had 1 (ONE!!) hornworm this year. That being said... borage is my least favorite plant in the garden. It's so messy (a breeze does a lot of damage) and prickly (gives me a rash) but I'll probably keep it in the garden because the bees do love it!!
