Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

Most times when you become worried about the background noises, they are actually no problem for your listeners. Loud chickens ... wonderful sound on the farm. Walking on gravel ... the crunchy noise just sounds like life in the country. Wind ... the breath of fresh air. Loud cows ... if only we could hear that in our everyday lives. During all those sounds, we can still hear your messages and sounds of the farm are soothing. Don't worry about them.

@MariaCanccerYou’re not only loved. YOU ARE LOVE. Anything that makes you feel good or even relief, will lead you closer to want you want. Spoil yourself when you can. Vent when you need relief. Laugh as hard you can. (Especially if it’s at yourself)😂. Always give yourself grace. Don’t take your strength and ability to find the beauty in the pain, for granted. You’re doing better than you realize. 😘 Just the fact that you’re here able to watch this positive video is amazing. 🎉 I have to keep it real, I’m not sure I could if I was in your situation. You are FABULOUS! 😎
The cut flower tunnel , I would create a space when you first walk in , that would fit a table (for not only sitting but for floral arrangements ) and some shelves for things like water buckets , snips , leaf litter container , all those kind of things . Not only practical but to really "romance the ordinary " ❤

I love being able to watch people that have the same passion as me and make it make them money. Much better than any program I could waste my mind on.
I vote for keeping the current layout in the cut-flower tunnel and just adding boards and gravel to define the beds and suppress the weeds. I think it's more fun to meander through all the smaller beds instead of walking straight down the long "hallways" that you get with four long beds. Especially after Miah's reaction to building another long raised bed. 😁 Those longer beds can be a structural nightmare... Ask me how I know!
I saw the “garden tour 2023” title and clicked so fast! I’ve been loving the increase in content as your channel truly represents a way for me to escape the monotony of my life as a college student - who won’t get to be back in the garden for another several months😪

There’s no stinkin way I’m first in line. Hi Jess and Miah happy beautiful Sunday

I have a friend exactly like that. I have tried over decades to help her with various things to no avail, and it all goes to waste, including my time and effort. I decided several years ago she was on her own. @Kim Tiede, you are correct about the motivation!
I can really start to see the vision for this garden now! With that view from the pergola towards the greenhouse - I was like there it is! It's the Roots and Refuge lovely garden. You had cultivated such a beautiful, life-giving space before and I can see that again at this property. Thank you for sharing this process! It gives me so much inspiration and as always, it dares me to dream a little bigger!
A definite yes from me for high tunnel flowers. 4 parallel rows sound perfect. Can you imagine walking into the flower high tunnel and seeing rows and rows of spectacularly beautiful colors. One thing I just realized that I was waiting for during the garden tour was the peacefully serene sound of those lazy, dangling wind chimes. God bless this garden.
HELLO! I AM HERE AND READY!! WOO HOO!!!

THE WAY I JUST SQUEALED AND ALMOST SPILT MY HOT TEA! I have missed your tours!
Its so good to see you able to feel good and have garden snacks again! So happy for garden season !!
Let's watch. Respect from Africa 🇿🇦
In the contaminated tunnel, u can put a narrow raised bed knee high along sides with narrow high cattle panel bench over it/them. Then set trays on it in early Spring, and cattle wire will support stems of tall flowers in summer. Still middle space for work, big pots, patio furniture, new (modest) tractors, etc.
I have always loved that you called your garden “The Garden Belt”! Congratulations on the beginning of your 2023 Garden Tours. ❤ 🍅 ❤
I have always enjoyed your garden tours and learn a lot from you. Please don't stop. At 76 I am still learning and will continue to learn until God takes me to tend His garden in the sky.
What a surprise today after leaving church service. A garden tour!!! Thank you what a gift!
Jess, I'm so enthralled in listening to you, I don't even hear the gravel crunching beneath your feet. No big deal I think. ❤

I love that you let the brassicas go to flower- after a cold winter those may be the only flowers available for a month or more. Love the Bee friendly gardeners!

Crazy dreaming watching this! You know it's a joy when the video leaves you crazy to get out there and create more garden space!
After listening to one of your videos a while back, I finally came to terms with the fact that feeding your animals produce you have no more use for is not waste. I used to feel so much pressure to use every single piece of every single plant that it was sometimes overwhelming. Now when I can't stand to pick one more cucumber, my chickens get to eat cucumbers. They love it and i didn't let the cucumber become a burden to me.
GARDEN TOUR! GRAB THE POPCORN!
Good afternoon Jess, I’m so excited for garden tours! We aren’t quite there yet, another week or two maybe. Just wanted to share my creative thoughts with you so here goes! If it were my high tunnel I’d do the long beds like your old one but, I would put a little table and chairs in the middle instead of the end by the door…it will draw you in to enjoy the space more and from that perspective you see everything that’s blooming. It will allow your artistic side to contemplate the bouquets without the distraction of other areas within the farm. Plus morning coffees on rainy days will be soul lifting! Hugs to you, I know you will do something amazing! ~Nina❤
I'm with you Jess. Nothing wasteful about letting plants go to seed. Nature intends it. Pollinators need it. It should be allowed to let unfold
Have garden beds in the backyard, Ripped out the grass in the front yard and built more HUGE beds in the front yard last year. Husband wasn’t game until the harvest came in and all his family came and picked tons of tomatoes, chiles, Swiss Chard, onions. Never can have enough garden beds!
Miah im so excited for the build of Jesse's garden gates, maybe with the old water Mellon metal art attached??? ,I adored her taking us through the gate, the sound of the latch ,the view as it opened up to display the amazing abundance of wild rambling beauty and life🌿🌾🦋 to me, it was her Garden Tour Signature ❤
Whatever design you choose for the cut flower garden will be beautiful. It's flowers!!! 🌻🥀
Yes to the cut flowers!! I dream of having a cut flower garden someday. Seeing other people’s cut flower gardens brings me life lol
Beautiful content and your enthusiasm is contagious ❤I think building various flower beds with large and different flowers in each, every 10 feet next to the drive road or walk way would be beautiful and provide some privacy for people driving through.🙋🏻♀️
My vote is keeping the current configuration for your flower tunnel. I think it’s much less demoralizing to be able to harvest short rows vs harvesting and looking down the row and thinking “oh my heavens, there’s still a mile to go” 🤣🤣 And even as flowers are glorious and beautiful, they quickly feel like they’re actively blooming as you’re harvesting because sometimes varieties (like zinnias, celosias, etc) can have SO MANY blooms per square foot!
Chicken sounds are fine and gravel sounds are fine❤ real life
I think the long beds parallel to the long walls in the high tunnel would be so pretty! You would be able to see everything from the door and would be so lovely.
I think you should put a wildflower patch in that empty space next to your raised beds into transition to your in ground beds. Its so pretty to see patches of wildflowers.
Rhubarb flowers are very pretty and you can still eat the stalks from the plant after it bolts. If you want to prevent it from putting all it's energy into making seeds you can just cut out the flower stalk. I usually let it get close to flowering then cut the stalk and put it in a vase indoors
I'm so happy to sit quietly this evening and fully take on this garden tour. Mother Nature can't seem to decide what season it is here (southern Quebec), so my gardening heart is living through you. For the cut-flower high-tunnel, I recommend trying it with your current layout for the first year. You may end up liking it, and then you wouldn't have wasted time and energy on changing something that works. I hope that helps.
Jess, you probably won't see this but I would watch a 6 hour long video if you made it. Your videos bring such joy!
Just started watching again. I lost you for a few years. So glad I got you back. 🎉
It doesn't seem like anything is wasteful on your farm. You have the most gorgeous garden. I love it! Your animals are so lucky. I pray that you continue to do the good work you've been doing and have continued success in all of hour endeavors. Love your devotionals and am so amazed how much you grow. I've been twitching waiting to see all those little seedlings when they get out into your garden beds. I learn something each and every video. Thank you so much. It's like I'm walking around the farm with my good friend. I have a cup of coffee with you each time.
Jess, your garden tours are my favorite!!! Your oldest ones are how I found you. You helped me find the gardener in me and a year later my life is changed (as well as my husband’s haha) and we have 10 large and beautiful raised beds with vegetables and some flowers and I love it! Thank you! 💗
With the cut flower tunnel, think about what will be most beautiful to photograph. That is such a key for what you are doing.
Love the fact that you have "So much food space".
its crazy how much space a family of 4 needs to grow enough food. We all need to be starting some kind of garden. I don't have a yard, but I DO have one greenstock so at least I have that. LOLOL
Yes , for the cut flowers in this high tunnel! It will be gorgeous! And the bees will love the shade!
When we moved to our property a year ago, my dad and I compared our favorite and most helpful youtube channels. We quickly realized we were both talking about you and Roots and Refuge! LOL Thank you! When you line your drive with trees, can I encourage you to contact your local extension office to determine what is native to your area? Most Crepe Myrtles are not native to anywhere in the US (there is one native variety but it is only native to TX). In keeping with your passion for feeding your family and your land, I believe you would appreciate providing a native tree that will serve the pollinators and songbirds, which will in turn serve your food sources. I love your passion and dedication to sharing the journey for sustainability and real food.
I like the shorter rows in the middle, you could plant the shorter flowers as you walk in and the the back row be the tallest flowers it would look like a giant wave of flowers 🌸 🌼🌺🌻
I love the thought of four long rows to walk down full of flowers. Great idea someone else mentioned to have a table at the front to do flower arrangements. Cannot wait to see the redeemed space!
I believe God gave Jess soil that needed mending so that she could reach all of us how to handle it. I'm so excited to continue learning about soil remediation. So exciting yay garden tours!!!¡
Seed saving saves so much money. Growing food for your animals is hugh you have done a great job with your plans
Yes, go with cut flowers in that area. As you say, "Grow something lovely.: YOU deserve it, Jess! You hane inspired me to try growing herbs for tea this year! I'm so excited.
I like the idea of 4 long rows for cut flowers. I feel like it would be easier to navigate for planting and managing. Plus, I would love walking down long rows of continuous flowers, it just seems more magical.
Beautiful...And to be honest I really enjoy the sound of gravel being walked on😊and birds chirping and chickens clucking ,even the sound of removing tarp...These are all sounds of my dream so I wanted to thank You for that while I'm trying to change my waiting room in to my classroom 😊 Thank You Jess❤️
Keep the beds in your cut flower greenhouse as it is. Taller plants toward the back working toward the front with shorter varieties so when you enter the greenhouse you can see everything. Each short bed will be easier to mass plant and successive plant. Maybe in the center of the short beds made a round bed that you could add a feature item (chair/fountain). When this is all planted you are going to want somewhere to sit and soak in all the color. Love it!
Leave the beds the way they are this year in the flower tunnel. Just lay down some cardboard and wood chips on top in the walkways. That will give Miah more time to work on other projects and will give you flexibility in future years if you want to rearrange. For future garden tours, what about if you highlight a different part of the garden on successive days? So Mondays could be both tunnels and orchard. Wednesdays could be raised beds. And Fridays could be animals. Or something like that. That way people could know in advance which days to tune in especially and it would help you stay organized and not have to rush or edit as much.
Good Sunday morning to you, Jess😊💕
😂😂 my husband asks me "so how many more garden beds are you gonna make?" SOOOO I answer him with a question "how much grass do you wanna mow?" 😂 We are currently halfway thru making our garden at our new homestead and it's been a blast!
For the cut flower high tunnel - I think you should keep the layout, but remove the center short bed and create a seating space. That way you can get lost in your jungle of flowers ❤
I LOVE THE SOUND OF THE GRAVEL! ASMR where you are concerned...🧡👏🏼
I was one of ur 1st people to start watching u in 2018, as I watch u now I find it so pleasing to hear the chickens, the ducks the cows, I Love it! & now the teaching begins once again watching u plant things, I Love the garden season!! Thx for the Beautiful garden that u grow & teach how to grow! 😃
What a lovely idea, cut flowers in that damaged high tunnel.
I just found your channel. I intend to get back into my horticulture roots. I worked in the ornamental horticulture industry for 7 years while obtaining my bachelor's degree. I was burnt out and despised my own garden at home. I have been working out of the industry for over 7 years now. I am finally looking forward to my own garden and showing my kids how to enjoy the fruits of our labor. I look forward to getting some inspiration from this channel.
I think keeping the high tunnel as is would be great. Each bed filled with a different beautiful flower. It would feel more like an arranged garden to me, rather than a factory farm. Bonus, less work for Miah.😊
I love watching these ❤ this is how I found your channel back in 2018 and found out all the different varieties that are available out there.

Also, I actually love the sound of the pea gravel. It's a nice sound, even with headphones
Good morning Jess and blessed Palm Sunday!
I actually like hearing the crunch of the pea gravel. It sounds like an English driveway.
I love your new Pavillion it takes me back to your old garden when you used to talk to us about your garden under your Pavillion with the windchimes an all the vines grown on things.
When you shared the disappointment of the contaminated soil in one high tunnel and chose to create a learning opportunity for real gardeners growing REAL food…that’s why I’m here. 🙋🏻♀️ (transparency) So happy your remediation efforts worked! You asked for opinions on the future cut flower high tunnel layout - I vote 4 long perpendicular rows and hope U are blessed with fields of color for showing us how to turn Monsantos into marigolds and turn disappointment into JOY. ✨💫✨💐
Don’t apologize for living your way of life. We are all unique, and finding our way of doing things. As a beek, I always save a portion of the garden to allow plants to bolt and flower, especially herbs. I am exhausted when I watch your channel, and my kiddos are grown and gone, so I don’t have nearly the responsibilities. Your vision is impressive and I respect all that you do and share. Thank you! Keep on being you…
Thank god a garden tour! Garden tours get me excited to plant. Nobody’s gardens have been ready enough for a tour yet, your the first. Happy to watch and get pumped for another gardening year. Regarding your bolted stuff…I do the same at end of season and leave out for the bees etc. Bees gotta eat.

She also has been inspired by you, promotes your books etc... and really admires you. I thought you may want to check her out and show her some love if you get some time....
