Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

Most times when you become worried about the background noises, they are actually no problem for your listeners. Loud chickens ... wonderful sound on the farm. Walking on gravel ... the crunchy noise just sounds like life in the country. Wind ... the breath of fresh air. Loud cows ... if only we could hear that in our everyday lives. During all those sounds, we can still hear your messages and sounds of the farm are soothing. Don't worry about them.

The cut flower tunnel , I would create a space when you first walk in , that would fit a table (for not only sitting but for floral arrangements ) and some shelves for things like water buckets , snips , leaf litter container , all those kind of things . I vote for keeping the current layout in the cut-flower tunnel and just adding boards and gravel to define the beds and suppress the weeds. I think it's more fun to meander through all the smaller beds instead of walking straight down the long "hallways" that you get with four long beds. Especially after Miah's reaction to building another long raised bed. 😁 Those longer beds can be a structural nightmare... Ask me how I know!

In the contaminated tunnel, u can put a narrow raised bed knee high along sides with narrow high cattle panel bench over it/them. Then set trays on it in early Spring, and cattle wire will support stems of tall flowers in summer. Still middle space for work, big pots, patio furniture, new (modest) tractors, etc.

Good afternoon Jess, I’m so excited for garden tours! We aren’t quite there yet, another week or two maybe. Just wanted to share my creative thoughts with you so here goes! If it were my high tunnel I’d do the long beds like your old one but, I would put a little table and chairs in the middle instead of the end by the door…it will draw you in to enjoy the space more and from that perspective you see everything that’s blooming. It will allow your artistic side to contemplate the bouquets without the distraction of other areas within the farm. Plus morning coffees on rainy days will be soul lifting! Hugs to you, I know you will do something amazing! ~Nina❤

My vote is keeping the current configuration for your flower tunnel. I think it’s much less demoralizing to be able to harvest short rows vs harvesting and looking down the row and thinking “oh my heavens, there’s still a mile to go” 🤣🤣 And even as flowers are glorious and beautiful, they quickly feel like they’re actively blooming as you’re harvesting because sometimes varieties (like zinnias, celosias, etc) can have SO MANY blooms per square foot!

Mother Nature can't seem to decide what season it is here (southern Quebec), so my gardening heart is living through you. Most Crepe Myrtles are not native to anywhere in the US (there is one native variety but it is only native to TX). In keeping with your passion for feeding your family and your land, I believe you would appreciate providing a native tree that will serve the pollinators and songbirds, which will in turn serve your food sources. I like the idea of 4 long rows for cut flowers. I feel like it would be easier to navigate for planting and managing. Plus, I would love walking down long rows of continuous flowers, it just seems more magical.

Keep the beds in your cut flower greenhouse as it is. Taller plants toward the back working toward the front with shorter varieties so when you enter the greenhouse you can see everything. Each short bed will be easier to mass plant and successive plant. Maybe in the center of the short beds made a round bed that you could add a feature item (chair/fountain). When this is all planted you are going to want somewhere to sit and soak in all the color. Love it!

Leave the beds the way they are this year in the flower tunnel. Just lay down some cardboard and wood chips on top in the walkways. That will give Miah more time to work on other projects and will give you flexibility in future years if you want to rearrange. For future garden tours, what about if you highlight a different part of the garden on successive days? So Mondays could be both tunnels and orchard. Wednesdays could be raised beds. And Fridays could be animals. Or something like that. That way people could know in advance which days to tune in especially and it would help you stay organized and not have to rush or edit as much.

For the cut flower high tunnel - I think you should keep the layout, but remove the center short bed and create a seating space. That way you can get lost in your jungle of flowers ❤

I just found your channel. I intend to get back into my horticulture roots. I worked in the ornamental horticulture industry for 7 years while obtaining my bachelor's degree. I was burnt out and despised my own garden at home. I have been working out of the industry for over 7 years now. I am finally looking forward to my own garden and showing my kids how to enjoy the fruits of our labor. I look forward to getting some inspiration from this channel.

I think keeping the high tunnel as is would be great. Each bed filled with a different beautiful flower. It would feel more like an arranged garden to me, rather than a factory farm. Bonus, less work for Miah.😊

When you shared the disappointment of the contaminated soil in one high tunnel and chose to create a learning opportunity for real gardeners growing REAL food…that’s why I’m here. 🙋🏻‍♀️ (transparency) So happy your remediation efforts worked! You asked for opinions on the future cut flower high tunnel layout - I vote 4 long perpendicular rows and hope U are blessed with fields of color for showing us how to turn Monsantos into marigolds and turn disappointment into JOY. ✨💫✨💐

Don’t apologize for living your way of life. We are all unique, and finding our way of doing things. As a beek, I always save a portion of the garden to allow plants to bolt and flower, especially herbs. I am exhausted when I watch your channel, and my kiddos are grown and gone, so I don’t have nearly the responsibilities. Your vision is impressive and I respect all that you do and share. Thank you! Keep on being you…

Thank god a garden tour! Garden tours get me excited to plant. Nobody’s gardens have been ready enough for a tour yet, your the first. Happy to watch and get pumped for another gardening year. Regarding your bolted stuff…I do the same at end of season and leave out for the bees etc. Bees gotta eat.

I have an entire bed of carrots coming up from leaving half a dozen go to seed. Didn't need to plant seeds or do any of the work to get them started. Mother nature did it all herself and gifted to me. I did the same with beetroot...

Hi Jess! I'm up in northern canada zone 2. I've watched you for years and you have inspired a love in my heart for the garden! Even though okra etc don't grow as well here haha. A little while ago I found another northern canadian zone 2 gardener who started a channel. It's called Boreal Living. She is a mom of 5, is French canadian but does this channel in English. She also has been inspired by you, promotes your books etc... and really admires you. I thought you may want to check her out and show her some love if you get some time.... I'm so happy someone in zone 2 is helping us northerners to live out your message of healing, health and refuge wherever we are planted...she is at 299 subscribers and I just want to support her. God bless you Jess!

For the rhubarb, wait for the flower bud to appear and remove the bud before it opens. It will tell the plant to slow down and develop thick, juicy stalks.
