We got a really good tip years ago from a good friend. With respect to peaches, nectarines, and pears specifically, when you have ones that need to ripen up evenly, you lay out a large towel, preferably wool, then line up the fruit that needs to be riper without touching each other, then cover them with another towel or blanket, and leave them for 24 - 48 hours. They will gas each other, and they will All ripen beautifully at the same time, evenly. We’ve done this for many years, and have had really good luck with this process (my wife is 70). We love what you are doing for your farm, and love you and your family. As 13 year Army veterans, we thank you and your husband for your service, as well!

I’ve done this as well. I have a tattered vintage Woolrich “Indian” blanket reserved just for such purposes. It’s too frayed to be a collectible, so I don’t worry about damage. I’ve often wondered if another material would work, but if it ain’t broke . . .

I was thinking the same thing…obviously - that’s where modern day “fish fertilizer” came from! Great job on the mushrooms! A tip I've learned, to deal with the handles on the buckets damaging my shrooms: Velcro dots or pieces to make straps (the kind with the peel-and-stick adhesive backing) , whichever works best for your particular situation, will keep the handles in place while at rest. I've damaged a lot of shrooms with the handles banging on the side of the bucket, or having to cut them from where they grew around the handle. I NEED those handles to move my buckets, so removing them wasn't an option for me. I get rolls of the Velcro tape and cut what I need as I need it. I grow extra shrooms to dehydrate, and even can some sauted with garlic and onions. I make a shelf-stable mushroom gravy mix. I also add them to my canned pasta sauces and make a mushroom-based canned "catsup". I've never managed to have so many extras that they went to waste. My largest weekly harvest was 106 pounds. Sounds like a lot, but they cook down or dehydrate to very little. I never actually sold any in great quantity, just gave some to friends and family.

I needed that blessing today. I mentioned to my prayer partner the other day that my tomatoes were not growing. Yesterday and today we have had drenching rain, no wind, and not hard rain, but the soft kind gardeners need. Today, I have multiple new shoots on my tomatoes, and new growth on my basil. I have about 90 days from when I planted them to the end of September, so I'm hopeful that they will produce and I can get them preserved for this winter's food supply. First frost is typically late October, so I should have 3-4 weeks of tomato production before that occurs.

We get peaches in the summer and just pit them and then immersion blend them into puree which we freeze in portioned bags and use for "syrup" on waffles or pancakes during the year. I use ascorbic acid in them to keep them a beautiful orange and it also helps with vitamin C for health. Sometimes i use it in glazes for meat. Best freezing technique we have ever done.

I know how you feel, sweetheart. I, too, got a late start - My son and I got CV 19. Then, we've got record heat in the 100's and drought in the North Florida panhandle. Then, about two weeks ago, we've been getting almost daily rain. The rain is a blessing, but the between the heat, drought, the tomatoes had really bad BER, and now, because of the rain and not being able to spray for pests, the bugs and weeds are taking over. I am getting some usable tomatoes, but I'd say only about 10 or 15% of what I planted - Most are either all stung up or rotting from the bottom up. Maybe next year! Like you, I'm not at all adverse to buying produce from local growers, and I'll have to do more of that to make my yearly canning goal. We just have to be thankful and grateful for what God is blessing us with!

Jess, we are SC neighbors, in North Augusta, SC. Your posts shore me and my daughter up in the quest for clean and plentiful food for our tables. You are inspiring! I look forward to the day your storefront is up and functioning, so we may make a real visit to Batesburg-Leesville, to touch what you are bringing to us all!

Glaf you are feeling somewhat better. I have 3 different friends that came back from vacation with Covid. The fatigue was the worst part. Don't know if this is your problem but rest and fluids were the only help. 🙏

Glad your feeling better!. Your Cherokee Purple is gorgeous. I agree like the 3 sided cage. Nana's picture is very nice. So much love stroke by stroke put in it! Yes heat is really testing things in the ozarks. Fingers crossed we get a fantastic shower this evening and tonight.

💚 Besides feeling under the weather, I hope your family vacation was a success overall. Thanks for sharing the so many things going in in your kitchen. I love the Oyster mushrooms, wow, that is so cool! Also love the 3-sided tomato "cage", great idea, Will! 💚

Glad to hear you are on the mend. 🥰 I've been catching up with your videos. After watching this one, and a few other recent ones, I went back and saw the farm tour you did 11 months ago. My goodness, what a lot of work you guys have done in less than a year! Your enthusiasm just thrills me. I totally understand how hard it is to leave your garden. I'm going on a trip next week and I am much more concerned about my garden, than I am about what to pack. 😂 Blessings to you also. Keep up the great work! Don't be discouraged about those tomatoes. Overall, you're doing a phenomenal job!

I love your channel. Thank you for sharing your journey. I’ve also been growing oyster mushrooms in buckets this year, as well. Mushrooms love humidity. Get a spray bottle & fill with water to keep nearby, & lightly lost them a few times a day. Also, keep the buckets out of direct sunlight, & they’ll do much better. They don’t like to be tucked away, once they start pinning, but they also don’t do well in direct sun.

We moved to southeastern nc in 2020 and I’ve never had such a hard time growing tomatoes as I do here. I’m on my third growing season and I’m just starting to get the hang of what they need in this climate. For fruit flies, I’ve found in addition to the avc traps, the window fly traps that stick on your windows are amazing!!!
