Freeway Interchange Stealth Camping
Back to the classics! I finally found a great camping spot in a freeway interchange. This has been on my camping list for a while, but I needed to find the perfect stealthy interchange. Crazy neighbor kindly dropped me and my camping gear off and then picked me up in the morning. I tried out a disposable grill and had a blast sleeping beside the roar of the traffic.

Here's a hint for having a stealthier fire: Dig a hole in the ground for the BBQ or even just to light a regular fire. That way, the flames can get taller before they get to where someone can see them. For that BBQ, I don't think you'd even have to go full Dakota fire pit and dig a ventilation hole on the side or anything. I have made Dakota fire pits several times and they work really well! They basically only smoke when they're first getting started and then they burn so hot that they stop smoking. The other nice thing about them is that you don't have to put as much wood in them to keep them burning. Then, when you're done with the fire, it's easy to just put the dirt right back to cover the hole and it leaves no trace that anyone ever made a fire there. You can always tell when the fire is completely out by seeing if the soil is still hot and that way you know how much water to put on it. It's nice for the plants in the area too because ash is good nutrients for them and plus you'll be watering the plants too when you go to douse the fire. Dakota fire pits are absolutely my favorite fire pits.

These highway ones are totally my favourites - I'm always driving along in the car these days thinking - there's a good highway camping spot, and another, and another. I guess it's because they seem like places that no one has ever gone before. I mean who would wander around or camp in a load of trees completely inaccessible to most people? That said I remember sitting in the branches of a tree next to a motorway one time and some car went past with the passenger just resting their head back and staring out the window as the car moved along, but I saw them do a double take because they obviously clocked me, and I wondered what it must be like to be in their seat seeing some random person in a tree in a place that seems completely inaccessible.
Funny how I've started watching old youtube videos like I used to watch cable tv repeats. I've been thankful for you for a few years now, but I just discovered a new reason to appreciate vloggers. Like so many others, you're re-watchable. :)

An actual survival situation where a car is stranded, say in the mountains. You can see trees, but everything is covered in snow. Boughs down, one of those, light that gizmo and use it for your fire's base. It's hot enough to melt snow off the wood you've put around it as a wind break and reflector. As you get wood dryish, you can add it on top of the charcoal. FYI, I keep a picnic sized charcoal grill to use as a fire bowl and several one pound lots of charcoal, vaccume packed with a paper inner bag that has some tinder in it, in the back of my rig when travelling, especially in winter.

I have a friend from England who has made two around-the-world solo, unsupported bicycle trips. He sells nearly everything he owns to finance each trip, checks out of his rental place, and sets off with no schedule, no reservations, and the goal of spending money only when necessary to fly in order to get to the next continent. Improvises the trips on-the-fly. Lives off the land. Usually gets fed for free by people he meets, and usually stealth camps (usually in places where that is prohibited)....just finds a likely spot, nips off into the woods or whatever, and pitches his tiny tent. He nearly drowned one time when it turned out he had pitched his tent over a high pressure pop-up arrigation/sprinkler head, which flooded his tent in seconds. Another time found that he was right next to a cliff that he did not see in the dark. Another time found that he had camped along the edge of an army gunnery range, in the line of fire had he not quickly cleared out after sunrise. Was accosted by Turkish military in the middle of the night, thought they might really cause him trouble, but ended up drinking with them and becoming buddies. Sneaking across borders past sleeping guards in the wee hours, since he did not have the necessary visas. Being hidden from the authorities by locals he befriended. The stories are endless. But I would rather listen to his stories than do crazy stuff like that myself.

Oh how I've missed these! Great to see you and Crazy Neighbor again ☺️

There is a section of highway in florida with woods inbetween and its actually quite wide, incredibly wide even. i often thought it would be perfect to camp there, but then the highway sort of splits to go around it and my concern would be cars crashing into it.

I've watched your videos for years, but have never left a message for you. You and your videos bring me so much peace that helps keep me living every day. I love nature but lack the motivation to actually get out and explore like you do. I hope to eventually change and explore/experience the world like you do. I express my condolences to you for the tremendous loss you've had to go through. I've gone through a lot myself but I find peace in your content. Anyways, I want to express my profound appreciation for you and your videos, and I hope that your next adventure is safe and marvelous! Cheers Step 2! RIP Crazy Neighbor

That bacon wrapped filet mignon looked absolutely disgusting. It looked like some meat glued shit you'd buy at the dollar store.
Steve hops in Glens truck “go go go!” like that bag of garbage was filled with money and he just left the bank 😂😂
Just started watching this channel a few days ago. Lo and behold, Steve picks an intersection only a few blocks from my house. 😂 I cross over the Henday there every day.
Hahaha love how you’re fine dining with a filet, pasta, and garlic bread while camping! Ever since finding your channel, I’m excited to go out and explore areas off trails (while still being safe of course). Really shows how the simplest things in life like the freeway you always drive on can become one of your greatest adventures!
Foil wrapped frozen pasta "Nice!" Garlic Bread "Right on, a little bit much for an offramp camp but still reasonab..." And bacon wrapped filet minion "Absolute madman"
Emergency barbecue in your car? You never know when you suddenly need meat right now. I love it.
A while ago I saw a video about a guy who actually built himself a tiny apartment inside a mall. It was free and great location. That actually made sense.
One of the most Canadian videos I've ever seen in my life. The very polite stealth camper

There's an interchange near me that's like a forest. I often thought of doing this. You could actually build a cabin here and no one could tell.

Hilariously sometimes that land is for sale. I was looking for blank acreage and SO many listings were spots like this just jammed between two roads with a bunch of trees. Cheap too...wonder why.

In south NJ there is a real active highway with a house in the woods just like this. But I found out that the land owner didn't want to sell, and was willing to work with the highway management when the interchange was built.

Yep, it wouldn't be camping with steve if he didn't virtue signal 10 times about picking up garbage so he can get the attaboy's
I stealth camped for 2 years in woodland at the edge of a town. It was only 10 minutes walk to a supermarket. With the rapid growth in homelessness, pretty soon Steve will be encountering other people in these places.
Steve sitting in a median trying not to catch on fire while cooking dinner casually mentions physics like it's an afterthought. Suddenly I feel very less smart.
Steve’s stealth camping is always the perfect crime. The police will never be able to keep their eye on every bush in Canada lmao

Back in the 70's I spent a couple years hitchhiking cross-country, and would basically have to find a place to sleep if I couldn't get a ride. I found that these interchange forests were actually very good options, if large enough, and safer than wandering off the highway where you were most likely to be found and harassed by locals or cops. depending on where in the country you are, these mini forested areas can be pretty big and also isolated.

That camo netting really works. I was surprised that even 10 ft away, it blended right in.
Steve, for years I've spotted parcels of land, small groves of trees along the highways that looked like great "stealthy" camping spots. I feel your socal anxiety about being discovered. But you have a legitimate reason for "trespassing" on land. You're a KZread star! Be confident that even if you are discovered, you belong there. There should be a way to build a stealthier campfire... So sorry to hear about your wife, man. That has to be a kick in the gut. I hope you find renewed interests and convictions. Jess will always be with you. Talk to her...or scream at the sky!
Crazy neighbor being the get away driver is always nice to see
Top tier episode of camping with Steve this week. THIS IS WHAT WE SUB FOR
This video made me miss Alberta. I lived in Ontario, Canada for 22 years and moved back to Central Europe almost 2 years ago.. same amount of time I spent in Alberta when I worked in the oil patch. Hated at times but looking back I have some very fond memories of that place. When you mentioned Nisku it made me remember all the times I drove to Edmonton from Hardisty and how much I love that city. In the unlikely scenario that I return to Canada, Edmonton is where I am headed.
In the 1970s, I hitchhiked across the USA. Camped in Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Washinton State, Montana, and South Dakota, but the craziest time was in Iowa during a tornado. I had to go up an embankment to the underneath side of the highway. A few cars stopped, and the drivers joined me.
I think Camping with Steve every time I drive past places like this along the highway. I am definitely a Steve junkie!

Lol I used to do bird surveys off the highway all over alberta and I’m 100% the most likely person to run into Steve 😅 I run into camps all the time i just walk on past
Love the litter picking idea, always do a bit on a wild camp myself. Thanks for setting a good example.
I have it in my head that cops all over Canada know who Steve is and if they happen to spot him, there’s just an understanding - thou shalt not hassle Stealthy Steve.
Always thinking about this when I drive down the interstate. “Oooh, I could camp over there, and there.” Thanks for living the dream.
I love that you pick up the garbage I think that's wonderful! I love that you have such a big following because I think more people would do it.
"Don't know why people even have a house except for a place to keep the cats" - haha loved that!
Love the "Go! Go! Go! " glad you and Crazy Neighbor had a clean get away. :)
Loved the overhead drone shots, they gave a good "big picture" of where you stealthed. Happy Canada Day!
