U-Haul Stealth Camping In -35 Degrees

Ойын-сауық

This video is for entertainment only and not an instructional video, if you are considering using propane appliances, please do research on how to do so safely. The Mr. Buddy heater is approved for indoor use in the US, but not in Canada. There is a low-oxygen shut-off, but it still requires ventilation. Always bring a carbon monoxide alarm and a fire extinguisher! (End of disclaimer haha)
This week it got down to -35 Degrees Celsius (-31 F), so of course, I had to go out and see if I could do stealth camping in a rented U-Haul van. Things went as smoothly as could be expected for a van with no insulation in it. I did bring my Big Buddy propane heater to take the edge off, but it was still quite an adventure.

    40 years ago, when I was a kid, my family moved cross country from Seattle to NYC. My dad rented a full size U Haul truck and towed the family car. We took it slowly and stopped at all the major tourist spots: Yosemite, Badlands, Mt Rushmore and so much more. We stayed in motels but mainly slept in the back of the Uhaul. Watching this video brought back so many happy memories of those innocent times. Thanks Steve.

    Go Steve! I once moved to Australia from England and lived in a 89 4x4, Mitsibusushi Pajero lol. Once I brought it I was broke, ripped out the rear seats got some lumber n built a bed. I drove halfway around Oz chasing the sun living my best life. I really miss Tasmania, the outback and the ocean. After that I lived in New Zealand, S E Asia and now I live in Saskatoon, Sk, Canada. About 4.5 hours from Hunkering down. A few weeks back she got down to -55 with windchill, in OZ I got to +47. I miss the road. Steve, I know that feeling when ya trying to get ya head down and the police bang on the window or people come out the bush and attack you lol. People don’t realize how much skill it takes to live like this, ain’t no book to teach you. Just many hard nights. Some of the best nights of my life looking back. When people can’t work but I got a job in a 5 star hotel living in a 4x4 in 37 degrees in the Northern Territory. Got the job from calling random companies in Yellow Pages. The extreme heat was my iron and my mirror helped me shave. My shower was on the beach once the sun went down. Never take for granted toilets, running water, good night sleep, hot meals, shade, a few dollars in ya back pocket, a job when you need it, a car that starts, fire, and good health. 2.41am and Steve got me thinking lol. Feeling grateful, lying next to my loving dog Lulu and patting her head. When the sun comes up she’s going to get a long walk and I’m going to think more about those times. Been a tough week. Some basic tips for those new to this. Park on level ground! Pull up late and cook elsewhere Always leave the drivers seat empty and have keys at the ready for emergency bug outs. Have a tool for protection Have one area where if shit goes south you can find keys, torch, knife etc with ya eyes closed. Buy a good blanket n pillow. Keep lots of water Have a bag of rice, canned food on the ready at all times. A good lighter Propane topped up Good home made curtains to block the world out Little first aid kit A bucket A pack of Johnny’s Smokes n tea bags 🇬🇧 Copies of ..Best of Fleetwood Mac and Bruce the Boss and a random Scottish Bagpipe soundtrack. Oh, yeah, if you got the change some step 2’s I really do miss the open road. My advice Do dumb stuff now before you get older and more sensible. Stay away from debt Stay away from debt Stay away from debt I’m not a rich man but I own everything I have, I got a small nest egg and I like knowing if I want to/have to, I can pack a bag and ship out in the night. Still to this day I struggle to unpack and live in a house. I hide things under pillows etc. I feel uncomfortable having too many possessions. Stay safe people and never let anyone talk you out of adventures. One day hopefully when I’m older, In my last hours on this planet I won’t be thinking about cars n watches. It will be sleeping under the Milky Way, in deserts, forests, mountains, Prairies and watching the sunset on a deserted beach with the ocean singing, running from a killer hale storm, dancing naked to UB40 in the eye of a major storm drunk on red wine, swimming in crock infested lakes, doing 265KPH on my motorbike, jumping off killer cliffs in the outback and living in absolute wilderness. I should sleep now x

    @ Sir William I am from Finland where -30 to -40 C is not uncommon, and -20 happens for extended periods most years even in the south where 90% of the population are. I lived in the UK for 15 years, and trust me you do not want this weather there. The housing in the UK is built to barely withstand a -5 C cold snap for a day or 2. There are still an overwhelming number of dwellings with single glazing and uninsulated stone/concrete/blockwork walls. The two winters I saw snow in the UK between 1997 and 2012 were stupidly cold in the houses we lived in. In contrast, when we moved back to Finland in 2012, had the first winter there where it was -30 to -35 for about 2 months; our house was a decrepit shop from 1929, but it's made of logs with plain wood/putty double glazing so the cold conductivity is way less. Our house was so run down there was a mansize hole rotted through the floor all the way to the outside in one of the bedrooms and we had one 2kW mini heater and two fireplaces to heat the whole place. Still warmer than our winters in the UK.

  • @blackwar12

    @blackwar12

    @@loikkaset exactly. I live in Alberta(same province as steve), and that -40 cold snap was no joke. A couple of buildings here in down had burst water pipes from heating failures, and apparently alberta's grid was pushing 100-101% capacity because we had to use space heaters due to some our heating systems unable to keep up.

    When the weather gets that cold in the midwest United States we go from being suspicious of others and strange behavior to being concerned about other people. Funny how that emotion kicks in. you are so right. I was building a house up north, and it was -35. I was long ways from home from November-beginning March. I was to cheap to get hotel, so I insulated my small 5x8 cargo trailer with 1 1/2" Styrofoam insulation. I placed a small heater up front under the tv, and coffee maker. I raised the bed 4" off the floor so the heat can travel underneath the bed. I found that if I put my beer on the floor, they would almost be frozen from the cold floor/heat above. If I raised my milk/vegetables foot off the floor they would stay a perfect cold. Christmas tree lights running around the top. The neighbours at first were very nervous and a few of them offered me to crash at there place, they were nervous that I would freeze to death. One of them gave me there password to the resorts pool so I could go for a hot tub and shower when ever I wanted. People were really nice. the end of the day, I would use the scrap lumber from building the house to have a huge fire, and even a fox started coming around more often when I started feeding him eggs. At first he would be 50 feet away nervous, after a few months he would get to about 5' from me to grab some food. The only uncomfortable thing was running through the woods at 5am trying to find a secluded spot to do my morning duty, and it would be slightly uncomfortable when the wife came up for a few nights to help me on the house.
