DIY Solar River Raft 5 Days Camping

Ойын-сауық

400 watts of solar panels, 8 rain barrels and a 40lb thrust trolling motor propelled us on our 5 day river adventure on the North Saskatchewan River. I brought along crazy neighbor and the two of us got stuck, caught fish, and had the adventure of a lifetime.

    I love how this dude shows simple glimpses into his adventures without over exaggerating anything or boasting about his skills. Just a normal dude that likes to get out and politely does his thing while pushing a lot of boundaries. Plus he sometimes brings Crazy Neighbor who seems to be a chill old dude that’s in it for not much else except hanging out with his buddy while enjoying the adventure. This is as wholesome and real as it gets in the world of friends enjoying themselves and not harming anyone or anything.

    I love seeing how Crazy Neighbor looks at Steve whenever he talks, like you can really see him listening and just having such a good time being with his friend. I really get a kick out of seeing these two dudes interact and just being so genuine to each other. Makes a fella feel nice on the inside. Just got to the part where Crazy Neighbor said he caught one big fish and two rocks. Absolute legend.

    There is something wonderfully hapless about Steve's adventures. Waking up in a solar powered boat, in the shade. Twice. Taking a flame thrower to soaking driftwood, walking down the middle of a river towing his own boat, describing people waving to him as 'stressful'. It's all so natural, so real, and so very relaxing to watch.

    Hey Steve, when I discovered your channel last year my girlfriend said “He’s doing exactly what you’ve been talking about wanting to do since I met you!” (10 years ago) Well done sir, live what you do, and your style doing it. Anyhoo, I just saw this episode and I quickly thought of a massive improvement, but when I heard you actually ask for tips on the build I had to tell you. I never do anything social at all so this is weird to me but whatever… Ok since that solar rig you have is so touchy feely you need to maximize the sun you do get. Angle is everything. You want the rays hitting the panel at 90* (I don’t know what that is in Canada, Lollington) or as close to it as possible, so next time, and I know this video was two years ago (it would be ridiculously cool to see this on a new video btw hint), put the solar panels on a twelve inch post, which is screwed into the roof beam about two feet away from the front and rear points. Mount the panels on a sheet of plywood cut to the size of the panel, and attach that to a ball and socket joint which is attached to the post. You can then loosen the joint, and pivot the panel in all directions, angling them to 90* to the sun rays. You could go full speed all day. Woohoo. Secondarily, a more flat bottom would help skim the shallowness. I don’t know maybe put two barrels on each corner and shrink wrap the piss out of them so it’s flat on the bottom. Yes rocks I know, so maybe add wood or something, this was mainly about the solar idea. I know this will help and I hope you use the idea…Thank you so much for not only doing all these adventures, but for filming and sharing it with the world. Your channel is like comfort food. I’ve given up the Step 2s for Step 3s but I’d love to go on an adventure with you and Crazy Neighbor. I have some friends in the Creemore area that have asked me to come up soon, it would be insane to actually meet you and do nutty shenanigans. Peace out my friend.

    Aiming your solar panels toward the sun is an excellent suggestion! Keeping them at even approximately the correct angle is likely to increase the power you generate by 20 - 30 percent or better. It makes a huge difference even on days as cloudy as seen in this video.

  • @WES-JGC-2013

    @WES-JGC-2013

    I do agree with a simple swivel solution to keeping them directly at the sun, I'd do a cheap motor that had a control if I did it , but where they are floating down a river and the "boat is constantly turning and spinning and the river isn't a straight line it would be a lot of work making it as efficient as it could be on something that was not moving, or maybe a little more in control! The flat bottom thing i agree with if just using something like a sheet of plexiglass or cheaper durable plastic! But the way they do it is just so much fun to watch! He's a simple man, and so is "Crazy Neighbor"! They like it as simple as it can be with a little tech sometimes like the E-bike. I agree on both ideas to help out with making it an all-around better boat! Just not sure if that is what he wanted on this thing! I'd like to build one and use those methods combined with what he did and make something to have a blast on!

    Steve I love to watch the transition that took place between the young man who quit his job and hated society and was living in a van seemingly a little angry at the world, to the mature man who is just easy-going and enjoying life and produces wholesome good videos of his adventures. I like it that crazy neighbor is more visible in this video and is interacting and talking more, he just seems like a cool OK dude. I like you’re stealth camping videos very much, but I miss that you have someone there to interact with. This homemade pontoon boat is the bomb and I really enjoyed this video!

    I just found Steve today & after binging my thought was, while cooking lunch, is that Steve is helping ME believe in society again & ready to get back out there. So if his travels in life lead him to where he is today, I'm grateful. We all have a past that might not be pretty to look at... This is the kind of world we should live in where people are free to have these crazy adventures without stressing about how they will make enough money to survive. I'm thankful YT has allowed some people this freedom already and bitcoin will do the same for the rest of us who you won't see on YT. The change is coming and it can't come fast enough for all the amazing people in this world that deserve it. Peace & bitcoin prosperity to all.

    we are all in the same boat and it is sinking, so we have to keep each other safe. this life is just a river with the only constant that is love. God gave us love and we should share it. there is no past there is no future everything is now and we have no choice other than finding ourselves within the now with the help of Faith in our Creator. each of us is created uniquely and there is always someone who is better at some things than the other and we all have values. i do not know if it helps you or if you are against the idea that God created us for a reason and that the world is the way it is, for we have to go through fire to know what is important and constant and we need to do it to test our strength or to acknowledge our weaknesses. wish you well and at least you still have your parents by your side. if a bird does not need to worry about getting food tomorrow then why should we? God will care for us if we humbly accept being his sheep.

    I was in your situation from ages 13-17. I've never had any mental conditions so I'm probably no help there, but I do know what it's like to live in hotel rooms and be in a new town 8+ hours away from the previous one every 6 months, and honestly that wasn't the worst of it. The feeling of having no control was nearly unbearable. I found that once I accepted there were certain things I couldn't control I felt much better. I started to focus on things I could control and find productive things to do. I don't mean productive in the sense of doing work necessarily but just anything that would make me or someone else happy. Bring as much positive energy into the world as you can and the world will give it back to you ten fold. Focus on anything good in your situation. Focus on things you can control. Focus on what you can do for yourself and the ones you care about. Even if it's small. Anything you can do to keep busy and help yourself and others is a step in the right direction. Also remember this isn't forever. Eventually you will be out on your own and hopefully you will have learned as much as you can from your current situation so that as an adult you aren't living in the same conditions. I'm honestly grateful for what I went through as a teen. I feel unbreakable. Of course I feel negative emotions and that's completely normal. But I've learned that there is nothing I can't work through. You will too. You are unbreakable. No one and nothing will ever be able to prevent you from living a full happy life. Ever.

    Don't fall for the pandemic, it,s BS. We don,t wear mask or gloves and don,t have any problem. We haven't changed any thing in our lives since the BS.More and more people around here are not wearing mask. We live in Northern Ca. and haven't seen anybody with it. Go out and have fun. Those who we here about that got it says its just another strain of flue. It's more serious for people with other problems. Two years ago 80'000 people died from the flue here in America, how come they don't report the flu this year.Go out and live.

    hey Steve, I just found your channel.......and I love what you are doing!!! While the rest of the world is complaining about what they can't do during this C-19 bullshit, you go on adventures. You have done something else that very few KZreadrs are able to do, I just read a couple of pages of comments and there is no fighting and almost no haters, everyone seems to feel the same, we want to see more of you and your adventures.....(Crazy neighbor as well) I will be watching your videos from now on, I felt at peace and laughed a lot !! you are the real deal ........nice for a change!.....cheers, Dave from Ontario

    You asked for ideas for future trips. Did you consider filling those barrels with expanding foam? Closed-cell foam would mean they'd still float even if a rock tears a hole in the side of them and no more concerns about bringing an air pump to keep them inflated.

    To make the tarps easier to manage- add broom handles (or PVC maybe for lighter weight) and roll them up and down. Then ya don't have to fully remove and replace daily! Loved getting to follow along on this river adventure..straight outta all of our childhood fantasies

    For your next maritime adventure, I'm sure you can get a navigation chart of the river with riverbed depths to avoid the shallows. Also, perhaps adding another anchor would make camping overnight easier, as you wouldn't have to be concerned about tide changes beaching your vessel.
