Foundation Exercises | Tor Yu's

This week we wrap up our complimentary training, where you’ve learned 6 of the 7 foundation exercises that are directly connected to the 108 Tai Chi moves.

The foundation exercises are the fundamental element in changing the body. The Principles (which we'll cover in upcoming videos) ensure proper alignment for those foundations to work. The Tai Chi set gives you a set of moves to which you can apply the foundations and principles in a practical way.

    Thanks Kevin, I am recovering from a a Dec..2018 stroke awhich paralyzed my hand, I practiced Taoist tai chi for 25 years previously, which greatly helped with my mobility recovery, and would hope that it would also help with my hand recovery too, by practicing the foundations daily, so I’ll bedoing t hem every day with you and alone too. Not leaving the housemuch because of the isolation Covid 19mandate, but this is also helping to keep me calm and relaxed, stay home and stay safe! Everyone

    Hi Kevin, can I ask if this is merely an exercise, or is it meant to instil the principles of Tai Chi? If it's an exercise than great. If it's meant to teach students bodies to follow Taiji than there is a flaw in what the back leg does. Of course you probably realize what I mean; the connection between upper and lower is severed. There of course needs to be continuous uncoiling from the foot to hands. Your back leg fully straightens half way through and well I guess you can see my point. (Hopefully everyone can accept this comment which is from the heart.) Good luck in your practice.

    Hi Len, Thanks so much for your comments. I really do appreciate it. You have a good eye and I’m not sure if you are an instructor or not but you should be if you can pick out the subtleties of timing and such. To be clear though, this video ( as well as the other foundation videos) is intended to introduce the beginner to the basics of the foundations and so is simplified to simply show things like where to put the hands and feet and the basic dynamics. I feel that with practice the body learns the timing but it has to start with proper alignment. Mr. Moy had a very good understanding of the dynamics of the body and how the circulations worked (He was a Taoist monk) and he had a unique way of teaching and sharing his understanding. I try to follow his example as best I can in terms of giving the student what they need to progress from where they are at in the moment, and this is why I demonstrate the way I do in the foundations videos as well as some of the other videos. You are correct in pointing out the timing ‘flaws’ and again, while there is a reason for it, I appreciate your comments. It sounds like you have a good handle on your own Tai Chi. Check out some of our other videos on our channel and maybe you will see a difference. BTW what style do you practice? Cheers

    Hi Kevin, in the past I used to see the flaws in what was being passed on incorrectly. Initially it was kind of frustrating as while I could see how things were wrong My knowledge didn't match my instincts. For me that was a spur towards self cultivation, and development. I realized that all teachers are human, just the same as everyone in this world. I guess it's our responsibility to try to not let our flaws influence our students, and instead surpass our flaws. I have a lot of respect for your society and the work it does for human development, and wish you all the best.

    Hi Len, Thanks for sharing all that and just to let you know I haven’t been with the society for a few years now. I have chosen to be an independent resource for people that want to improve their Tai Chi as well as follow a path of self cultivation.( hence the variety of videos on our channel). Glad to see you are on that path. You are right, Mr. Moy had created something that goes a long ways in human development and far beyond just learning Tai Chi and my goal is to continue sharing his vision in making it available to everyone.     Really enjoying your tai chi exercises. Just a grammar question. Why is it ‘s? Should plural not be Tor Yus. The apostrophe denotes belonging to.

    Thanks so much for answering. I just gave a heads up of your great videos to several friends. On looking into the word yu it seems to be one of those words which can be either plural or singular though I think one could add an s.

    @@ingerpaulsen6459 Hi Inger, As I understand it, Tor Yu translates roughly as "turning spine". Dan Yu translates as "sitting spine". Cheers Kevin

    When extending forward and when the weight is mainly in the front foot, where should you feel the weight in the front foot? I find when my arms are extending out more the weight tends to shift to where my toes are. I adjusted my arms so that my elbows were lower and bent and closer to my body and regained balance. After doing so I noticed I could extend a bit more forward whilst keeping my body straight. I think we should try and keep the weight in the middle of the foot is that correct?

    Hi Jordan, Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes, the weight should end up going into the middle of the foot (bubbling springs) so that the whole foot is loaded and then the body can relax down into it. If the weight is in the toes, it can create tension in the leg and usually indicates that the knee is going too far forward so maybe see if that is happening. Mr. Moy would emphasize stretching in the Tor Yu's (and the set) and keeping the elbows down was important. Allowing the arms to extend would engage the tendons but it needs to be balanced with equal and opposite extension of the back leg as the weight drops into the front leg. The body extends forward but keeping a straight line heel to head with the balance in the front leg ( not folding forward at the waist). The longer the step, the more you can extend and the shorter the step, the more upright you need to be. Keeping the back leg connected when extending forward is important. Are you working with an instructor? If so ask them to watch and help you with the alignments. If not, or they can't help you, don't hesitate to send us an email and I will help as best I can. Cheers
