Foo Fighters "Everlong" Collection on Letterman, 1997-2015

"Everlong" was included on Foo Fighter's sophomore album, "The Colour and the Shape," released in August 1997. The band first performed it on Late Show two months later. Dave later disclosed that it was one of his favorite songs, and so it became a staple on the show, played not only four more times by Foo Fighters but also frequently by the CBS Orchestra during the commercial breaks.
Here are all but one of Foo Fighter's performances on Late Show. Their "Live on Letterman" version was blocked, so it's not included here.
1. October 8, 1997. Foo Figher's third appearance on the show.
2. February 18, 2000 (aired February 21). Dave's first show back after recovering from quintuple-bypass heart surgery.
From Wikipedia: [Dave] Grohl stated that he was "blown away" after learning that Letterman was a fan of their music. The band went as far as canceling a stop on a tour in South America so they could perform, explaining that "We just felt like we had to be there. Not only was it an honor to be asked, but it felt like something we had to do -- because he had always meant so much to us. And that started this connection that we've had for years. It's fucking cool, you know?"
As Dave L. said on his last show, he and the band were now "joined at the hip."
3. April 12, 2011. Dave's 64th birthday. After their broadcast performance of "Rope" (not included here), Foo Fighters stuck around after the taping for an unaired rendition of "Everlong."
[4. April 12, 2011. Following the broadcast and then birthday-gift performance of "Everlong" for Dave, Foo Fighters hosted a two-hour online-only "Live on Letterman" concert in the Sullivan Theater, where the song was included. This was blocked on KZread, so it's been deleted here.]
5. May 20, 2015. Foo Fighters were invited to perform the song one last time on Dave's final show, here with a newly-created montage of rarely-seen Foo Fighters/Late Show content. All of images were taken by staffers who then shared them on their Facebook pages.*
After the show, the staff, crew, and band attended an affair at the Museum of Modern Art. A specially-designed t-shirt celebrating the Foo Fighters/Late Show relationship was distributed. Included in the montage are some photos of both the t-shirt and the after-party. Then a "making of" staff photo from October 2014, after the band had appeared on the show for the full week. And finally a thank you note from Dave Grohl.
Plus two bonus clips.

Almost no one realizes how hard it is to sustain perfect time on that high hat-to-snare exchange for three minutes, especially while playing triples on the kick drum. I frequently (try to) play along with this song to warm up, and I have never been able to get all the way through without dropping the beat at least a couple of times. The cat is a human metronome.

I read these comments one week after Taylor’s untimely passing. Taylor Hawkins was an absolute beast on the drums. Dave is a perfectionist with a vision and sets incredibly high standards for the musicians he shared the stage with. Percussion was something he didn’t take lightly and had a very hard time finding the perfect fit for the FF. Taylor was that musician. We will never see another Taylor and I’m afraid Dave knows this. I relish the memories Taylor and the band has left us. I hope we see FF again but I will understand if Dave closes this chapter of his career. A profound loss indeed. Peace to all the FF fandom with a collective sadness…RIP.

You're exactly right, Bill. :LL I was a particular kind (a 'for Dave' kind) of nervous the night of that last show.. But I knew I absolutely 'must do it'.. and sat there nervously (not knowing how they were planning to shape the show, entirely), yet awaiting ants-ily to hear what Dave would & wouldn't say.. And what kind of composure/fake-it-till-ya-make-it composure he would have.. what kind of mixture of nerves... Knowing he'd spent 33 glorious years doing all that.. The ups, downs, all of it.. and thenn 'the end'. I did feel like I was losing a friend/dear family member of sorts. I ate lunch with him (dvr'd the show) for gosh sakes.. Good times. Yes.. from Dave to friend Dave. He couldn't'a picked it any better. Makes me sad whenever I think of the line 🎶If anything could ever be this real forever.. If anything could ever be this good again.. Anyhow, all of that^ is a quicker whir/blur in my mind, but in type, it's lengthens the sad out, & is like I'm there again from 5 years ago..? Shit man.. 5 years, that hurts kinda.. I take a lotta comfort every now n again, in owning a Dave/Late Show mug I bought 3 years before the show ended. The way they did the blue of the mug, tootally reminds me of that reflective blue floor where he did the monologue 😊💜 When I look at it sometimes, I can just see him standing there, with his loafers, and GREY socks (he insisted with vigor they were never white, lol)..-- talking about crazy squirrels, or Spider Man, or street rats, or stinky subways 😝 Anyhow, sorry peeps, I just was transported to his last night, when I read the video description, as well as Bill's comment. ✌

When Nandi challenged Dave to an Everlong drum off, I heard Dave say he hasn’t played it since he recorded it for the album. Taylor has the job of playing it. Dave said he had forgotten how hard it is to play.

That's impressive how they seem more confortable with the song each time they play! How it grows, how it becomes a classic! Thank you for the compilation. I share Letterman's enthusiasm: one of my favorite tunes.

OG Version with Franz Stahl is the best. I love the sound of the one in 2011too but the first one is intense as hell, just makes you wonder how much impact a replacing of just one of the crew makes on the whole perception of the track. He just adds that slight dark tone to the flow which makes the track the legend that it is..

They've always been just a class act...canceling a tour date for Letterman and even just wearing suits for Letterman's last show. Doesn't seem that big but not many rock bands would do that. RIP Taylor

Btw, the song "Everlong" is my favorite as well, ever since first hearing it in May 1997 at the age of 19 years old. Thanks for the upload Don!

I remember watching a few skits from the David Letterman show, that or Jay Leno, as a kid in the 80s and early 90s before my parents sent me to bed. I’d always tune in to see the musical guests. Since Letterman‘s retirement, And you’re awesome video, I can imagine all the Outpouring of love and Gratitude to Dave. I mean, just imagine because it is possible, after the show went off the air for the final time behind cameras, just imagine all the musical guests and icon legends who have been on the show it’s possible a lot of them could’ve returned, gave letterman a hug celebration, showing love and gratitude; giving him his flowers. I mean it is possible. Heartwarming thought, wonderful images, and what is a better world at that moment in time. Awesome video my dude
