Everlong and the Album That Broke Dave Grohl

Комедия

Everlong, Monkey Wrench, My Hero. They're all singles off of the Foo Fighters' biggest album, The Colour and the Shape. Yet, when it came time for Dave Grohl to write his autobiography, the Storyteller, the production of this album was left out. Dave didn't shy away from other difficult tales like the end of Nirvana and the loss of Kurt Cobain, or the many almost dissolutions of the Foo Fighters, so why did he skip this one? Join me as I explain the Foo Fighters album best album, that went terribly wrong.

He really is a class act. You 100% can't deny that it was a shitty thing to replace his drummer with.. himself. Whatever his reason was, and even if it's true that they were going to re-record it all, it was shitty in that moment to not include him. You can absolutely tell that it still bothers him how that shook out, but he's right.. If he hadn't done that, they wouldn't be the band they are today. The end quote perfectly sums it up. He's remorseful for what happened, but he's happy for so many other reasons. He doesn't regret shit.

@crazycatman5928 you're right. For me this song is an anthem and many celebrities prefer it as well. It is David Letterman's favorite song, to the point where Foo Fighters rescheduled their tour to play the showman's first show on his return to TV after heart surgery; He introduced them as "my favorite band, playing my favorite song." It was also the last song played on Letterman's last show before retiring. I love this song 🎵

I can see a producer like Gil Norton being an absolute NIGHTMARE for William Goldsmith to work with. If you’re a self-taught drummer like William was (and not someone playing to click tracks just comes naturally to, like it did to Dave Grohl), it would be really, really difficult to do a take he’d like. That said, I would really love to hear William’s “final” studio takes for songs like Monkey Wrench and My Hero. Unfortunately most have been lost to the sands of time - all that remains are really rough cut demos, which are not remotely demonstrative of what level he was eventually pushed to in the studio. What a bummer.

Well, Gil was a nightmare for everyone in the band. Even Dave was being made to do songs over and over again for hours and hours on drums in Los Angeles. It’s just that William was the only one who was in danger of having his tracks replaced and his role stolen. But knowing that Dave was there, yeah, maybe Gil would have always seen Dave as the right man for the job. I think the lost Goldsmith final drum tracks are probably out there and maybe somebody will take them into the light someday.

Grohl embodies the truth that everything works out in the end for the best. It's extremely hard, to damn near impossible to believe, but if we don't believe that, there is literally no reason to keep waking up and doing things. I'd rather keep waking up and doing things because sometimes you do really cool and amazing things. An extreme over-simplification, but what if Grohl gave in to every set back? We'd have no Everlong, My Hero, and a million other amazing songs. He isn't purely an optimist, but his story is one of perseverance because giving up is so much fucking worse. God bless Dave Grohl.

The day will come in which Grohl is regraded with the best... Lennon, McCartney, Elvis, Freddy, Bowie - etc. It's not happening in this generation of boomers listening to rock, because they are always looking back in the mirror. It will happen with the next generation... which is fine by me... that is exactly how that list of legends were coronated. So I say be wise, and go see Dave perform live. It may not change your life, but I guarantee you will remember that show.

I think it is a subjective and debatable matter, but these songs have something; which makes them the band's hallmark. In the case of Foo Fighters, I could safely say that “Everlong” includes those characteristics.

I met William and had a chat with him outside sdre’s tour bus in 98. I was 18-19 and was drumming for a band that took a lot of inspiration from jawbox, sdre, braid, etc… we(my band)drove 3 hours in the guitar players moms conversion van we used for out of town stuff. We were close. I was unceremoniously let go and replaced. That bands first record, all the songs I wrote with these guys, my drum parts are played with this new drummer. It’s hard to listen to for me, some bastardized version of the songs I helped write. I’m playing a show with my new band a few years later and the bass player(whom I had been friends with since middle school) of the old band gave me the raw recording of their new record. It was great. On the first album the new drummer was constrained and the second was part of the songwriting and honestly fit much better. So, I’m playing in this band and we have a set list that we run through to start a practice. Then we take 30 to be friends or discuss new song ideas or socialize with the other bands in our practice space, there were 6 practice spaces and two of them eventually got taken over by a startup recording studio which we everyone else in the space recorded with even though they charged them and said would do it for free for us…. In hindsight we should have done it, but I digress. Anyway, I’m in this band started by me and the guitarist and we have strong jazz roots but his favorite guitar player is from Nile and my favorite drummer is from smashing pumpkins…how do you make this work… well it’s easy… you bring in the drummers best friend, his brother, and also a Metallica sycophant. It really boggles my mind that band, not my most successful but the best musically imo, came from a band I was in, in high school, with me playing drums, my brother playing bass, and our rhythm guitarist finding the confidence to play the music he wanted to play… this is super complicated. We’re playing one persons music, there’s 4 people in the band. We all want different things, me personally, I just want to play music I like(quicksand hum helmet) and I’ve never played drums in a band like that so I just start writing songs like that and my brother, an accomplished guitarist, joins me in hashing out some ideas. Then our guitar player joins on bass.. drummer writes guitar, bass player embellishes on guitar, guitar player(who started as bass player) comes into fill out the soundscape. Simple songs that harken back to my roots. We got a drummer from another band that just happened to be the technically proficient we’d ever known, 20 years later now and still. I, being a drummer playing music I wanted to play drums to, had to write out the drums for the drummer to fit my songs the way I wanted. When I recorded my album for that band, I played guitar and drums. Point being I understand Williams frustration but I also understand Dave’s. Sometimes things are right and everyone gels and sometimes it doesn’t and you have to cut what doesn’t…

Also to note Nate Mendel almost quit the band just after Pat Smear announced his departure. In part; Nate felt bad about William getting fired and wanted to reform Sunny Day Real Estate. Nate even told Dave he was going to quit. Luckily, Nate slept on the idea and decided to ultimately stay with the band. (This story is mentioned in the Back and Fourth doc on the Foo’s.)

weird how "we chose this for a stupid reason" ends up working so many times. The color and shape can work great for thinking about concepts and emotions and things like that, and not in any stretch of a way either. "The color and shape of our relationship" is what I thought it always meant, as that works, imo, best for the album and its strongest songs. But hey, Radiohead accidently made a concept album (Ok Comp), so a deep album title can also be an accident.

In Nirvana it was apparent that Dave was, indeed, "da man" behind the kit. Top ten if not in medal position. If Phil Collins or Don Henley would have made it "awesome", he woulda sang lead from back there. It just isn't feasible to exteact the amount of coolness a lead singer needs to have.
