That first album that was poorly produced kicked ass without Grohl. This band is all Kurt. Dave still kicked ass though

Hurley was the first full album I listened to from Weezer when I was in third grade, not counting times that I heard them in compilations or on the radio. While it's far from the band's best work, I have a soft spot for it primarily because of nostalgia. The album does have some great tracks, and it gets too much hate for what it is.

I got into them right after Room on Fire was released. The band provided great memories and have a very sentimental place in my ears. Their music was revitalizing to me as a teen. I was never shocked they came from wealthy families, they always came off as NYC royalty. The jet setting Euro-American hipsters. But I liked that about them and as a broke teen in Middle America, wanted to emulate that. It was cool.

As someone with a stupidly intense hyperfixation on this one singular song for over a year, I can safely say that, while the song is in G# Minor the chords played in both the released song and the demo differ slightly. The demo was originally written a key down from the released version, respectfully F# Minor if I am to be correct. It took me an excruciatingly annoying amount of time to figure out some of the in-between cords, whilst figuring it out by ear (due to a lack of documentation by cover artists of the *actual* chords) for both versions. If you listen closely, you can hear a lot of four-note chords in the piano section (whilst not always being 7ths) and it does make it harder to learn. And those who say the released song is overproduced; I get it. While yes, an exceedingly stupid amount of songs on that album were overproduced to hell and back, I feel I can excuse this one. Both versions of the song seem to have their own purpose; the demo sounding more melancholy and nihilistic, while the released version sounds more like a cry of sorrow. I don't usually like too many overlaying instruments, but the melody motifs the guitars play and reprise during different sections of the song really give it an extra oomf. While I understand a powerful sounding song may not be the best sounding when written for a sad song, I think both are great. It is by far my most listened to song (over 500 plays two years in a row according to spotify, not including youtube plays and having it in my files on my phone and ipod) and while most may not agree with me, I think it's great that both were released in some capacity. We get to compare them, but also enjoy them both. They seem to serve different purposes but I think that makes the songs even better. :)
