Make Believe - How One Album Ruined Weezer's Reputation

Комедия

Weezer was never beloved by everyone, but they haven't always been a joke either. One album was the catalyst to this universal malice. That album is Make Believe. I'm summing up the making, meaning, and memory of the album in this video. It's ties to Elliot Smith, Shrek 2, Maladroit, the Green Album, the Blue album, and Pinkerton.
I spent 2 months researching, writing, rewriting, recording, rerecording, and editing this video. If you enjoyed, please consider liking and subscribing. I know I've got no videos at the moment. But, when I do, they'll be great. If you've got anything you wanna say after watching, please leave it in the comments below.

I started jamming MB a lot while waiting for red to come out. (I didn't specifically choose not to listen to MB at release, it's just I was 10, so listening to full albums wasn't a concept to me yet) I fell in love. And I've loved it ever since. If anything, becoming an adult who's been through some crap, it's just gotten better due to how relatable the lyrics are.

When I was a studio intern I actually delivered the 1/4" master tapes with Beverly Hills and a couple other songs to Rick Rubin's house which had the scariest steep driveway. Apparently the album ended up using a different a mix for Beverly Hills, which ended up on the video and my boss was kind of pissed. But I literally held part of that album in my hands and gave it to Rick's assistant. Unfortunately, the song quality was out of my control.

i loved the original band from the mid-90s (1st two albums, with matt sharp - favorite weezer member, & liked the rentals' 1st album almost equally to weezer)...then liked the green album comeback (with new bassist mikey - he was funny, but quickly quit/then died:(...have never like scott shriner much, as he's too cool to be in a nerd band, but a few recent tracks off select albums are pretty good/catchy - rivers might have over-saturated his own market by releasing too much material that waters down the quality/legacy of weezer's catalogue (& it's surprising they don't even have a 'greatest hits' collection yet, with the equivalent of 18+ albums of music, over the course of 30+ years)...

Honestly, besides Haunt You Everyday, I didn’t really care much for Make Believe when I first listened to it. Going through the Demos and coming back to it recently, I’ve found a new appreciation for this album, and I quite like it besides Beverly Hills (just not exactly my cup of tea, there). Make believe is still in the lower half of their Discography for me, I think, but I like that I now can at least say that Make Believe really *isn’t* all that bad, even if it’s not perfect. My opinion on Make Believe aside, this was quite a nice video, I enjoyed the further insight on the Album and it’s evolution up to release, and the presentation over all. Keep up the good work.

It's not my favorite, but I do view it as essential Weezer. It's become my Pinkerton in a lot of ways. People used to hate on Pinkerton when it first came out, but I loved it. Now Pinkerton is over-rated as a Weezer album can get, and I (not so) secretly love Make Believe. The Other Way is just as good if not better than anything to come off Pinkerton and IMO fits quite nicely as a compliment to In The Garage. That said, I pretty much will not listen to Beverly Hills, but I also won't listen to Dope Nose, or Hash Pipe either.

blue isnt intentionally power pop, in fact power pop is a made up journalism term, it’s a niche that over time got its audience and created bands trying to capture a specific sound into a genre, today there’s many bands from the 2000s and after giving power pop its own genre (basically recapture early beatles short pop songs with hooks songwritting and avoiding long guitar solos, the anti pretentious genre if you will) taking influence from elvis costello (at the time named new wave but now is revisited power pop) weezer BY NO MEANS created blue album listening to the rasperries or cheap trick, sure ric ocasek produced it and they loved the cars - but that’s another band who when it came out was titled as new wave, since like i said power pop was never an actual movement, you’ll never find any fans from that era claiming to be into power pop or power pop reviews with concrete references to what power pop is if you will, it’s a bit of a revisionism effect blue album has songs like only in dreams which couldn’t be further far away from music such as rasperries or cheap trick and some very vulnerable lyrics , what kind of power pop band sings about staying in the garage playing dungeons and dragons? at the end of the day the point is that blue album is a product of its era, more so heavily influenced by nirvana and especially pixies with the touch of bringing beach boys harmonies onto all that, rivers has most likely never listened to rasperries or cheap trick and i wish this narrative stopped which is ironic coming from someone who is fascinated and a fan of the made up power pop pop genre, if anything green album with its repeated formula and no long solos is more power pop than blue ever was

I dig about half of the album. Perfect Situation and Haunt You Everyday are highlights. The demo versions are better as are the demo versions of most of the songs that made it, especially the This Is Such a Pity one. Freak Me Out is a dumb song lyrically, but I’ve always loved the melody of it. Also I didn’t know about that strange connection Rivers had to Elliot Smith. I always felt he had a bit of a similar tortured soul in him as a songwriter but refuses to let it out often. Hoping one day he lets it all out. Heard him describe the upcoming Winter album they’re doing as being inspired by Smith so who knows. Last thing…Maladroit is great.

@@marioncobretti5970 I love Rivers. I just miss when his lyrics and Melodie’s weren’t driven by his algorithm approach and impersonal. He’s chased the trends too much when he is completely capable of writing top tier material. Occasionally he’ll come out with some great songs but it’s a shame that he’s capable but prefers to compose with others and for the current times/record co./cash flow. The old rivers wrote hits but they all meant something. Jake Sinclair is the reason that White likely exists and ditto Ric for EWBAITE. They asked him to revisit his artistry and he accepted, creating 2 other fantastic and meaningful records. “Feels like Summer” and the black album were desperate cries of existential writer’s crisis.

Very high quality work. Can tell you're a very creative and dynamic creator. Looking forward to your future stuff. My only suggestion is you that should maybe turn up the volume on the background music a little bit, it's in this awkward zone where it's discernible enough that I notice it, but not quiet to the point where I can't tune it out.

It’s a messy record, but one I’ve got a lot of love for. Sure, it drags a bit in the second half, the lyrics are cheesy as hell and there’s some actually awful songs on there, but it’s still a fun pop rock record and you can tell Rivers genuinely took these songs from his heart, as simple and corny as they might be. There’s a lot of charm to it in a way, I could never hate this album. It helped me through some rough spots and I hold it close because of that

While I appreciate the absurdist version of Weezer today, the music hasn't done much for me in a long, long time. I go back and listen to those first two The Rentals albums and I wonder what post-Pinkerton Weezer would be if things had worked out with Matt Sharp. It doesn't seem like the rest of the band has that much sway over Rivers. They just kind of tie themselves to something sturdy and try to ride out the storms which predictably end with a mish mash of sad boy rock and vapid pop hits. He doesn't seem to move anything forward. Matt Sharp has plenty of his own sad boy songs with The Rentals, but he was wrapping them in weird metaphors and being way more innovative and experimental with the sound. That kind of influence in Weezer would have made a huge difference.

@death to the suburbs totally. The only Rentals stuff that I couldn't get into is the most recent stuff because it lacked what makes things The Rentals to me. Alphaville is certainly less accessible than Return and Seven More Minutes, but there was still a core to it. If those two guys could have coexisted better, I ink we would have ended up with some amazing music.

I wouldn't describe Blue as Power Pop. That sort of music is jangly, and richer with vocal harmonies and are overtly more influenced by The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Who, and whomever was popular in the early to mid 60s. Blue sounds like Nevermind with great harmonies and nerdiness.

  • @trystero1729

I would totally describe Blue as power pop. Power pop, like almost all other guitar driven music, followed the general trend of getting more distorted over time. Big Star’s guitars were clear and jangly in the 70s, The Replacements had crunchy overdriven guitars but kept a little bit of that old brightness, and Weezer went all in on the distortion. Power pop is more of a songwriting style to me; lots of iii and vi chords and harmonies

Beverly hills introduced me to Weezer. I really liked that song when I was 13 in 2005. my sister bought me the album for my birthday and I remember thinking it was pretty terrible. It didn't rock like Beverly hilld. Luckily not soon later I discovered blue/Pinkerton through lime wire and 17 years later weezers still one of my favorite bands. My take is that they've been really inconsistent with their albums(but not in a bad way). They like to experiment and honestly it's usually not my cup of tea when they stray from the style that made me fall in love with them. I absolutely love "everything will be alright in the end," "ok human," and "van weezer," but I cant listen to anything off of the black album, pacific daydream, and so far the seasons albums they're currently working on.

Maladroit was a good and underrated album. And obviously the first two were great. I was kind of done with Weezer when they put out the Beverly Hills single. They lost credibility with me as artists. That song was clearly a gimmick and was put out to make money to have Beverly Hills type money ironically. I still cringe every time I hear it. They just got a little too wonky and silly as their career progressed. Make Believe had some good tracks on it though it wasnt all bad. Haunt You Everyday is one of their best songs IMO.

I know you needed to wrap the video up in the retrospective section, but you sort of swept the rest of their albums under the rug to make it seem like after Make Believe there’s a definitive view of the band. The production, reception, and changing reevaluation of the their material after Make Believe isn’t cut and dry and continues to change today

Even Though I Still Hate “Beverly Hills” To This Day, This, And To Some Extent “Red”, They Were My Official Entry Points Into Getting Into Their Music. Yeah, I Already Knew Of “Undone” And “Island” Being Constantly Played On Radio (Hell, The First Video I Saw Of The Was For “Keep Fishin’”, Because I Love The Muppets), But I Never Really Bothered To Check Them Out Until Much Later. I Still Have Very Soft Spots For Both Of Those Albums. I Love “Peace” And “This Is Such A Pity”, And Fuck, “We Are All On Drugs” Is Such A Fun Song To Play On Bass! I Make No Apologies In Like This Particular Era Of The Band. Great Video 🤍

I always thought that Make Believe was a very 'lazy' album because it feels just so...lazy. But learning about how troubled the production was, it certainly makes a lot more sense why the album feels that way to me. Its not that they didn't try, its that they had to pur everything through a blender to fit it into the album.
