Weezer's Lost Album - Songs from the Black Hole

Комедия

After their debut self titled "Blue album", Weezer set out on his next project. Their frontman, Rivers Cuomo, came up with an idea for space themed rock opera. But, when personal issues got in the way of the project, it was scrapped. Ultimately, what came from the fallout was their second album, Pinkerton. But, what happened to the rock opera? What was it about? What was Songs from the Black Hole?
This was my first fully live-action video, outside of my QnA. I made plenty of mistakes, but I think the video turned out to be one of my favorites! If you liked it, please consider liking and subscribing.

I saw Weezer live in the summer of 2000. They played all the good tracks from Blue and Pinkerton, and then did an Encore that was easily an album's worth of unreleased tracks. They weren't very good... and none of them ended up on the Green Album. It was cool to hear a bunch of tracks that never got released though.

There's only one album that really comes close to Pinkerton for me and it's Songs From the Black Hole. You can imagine my excitement when I saw Goat Punishment pull out "I Just Threw Out The Love Of My Dreams" (possibly my favorite Weezer song) and "You Gave Your Love To Me Softly" last fall. For me, the definitive version is Operation: Space Opera. For those who aren't familiar, It's a fan re-recording and interpretation of the entire story. Each character has a unique voice actor and it has the polish of a finished album. Despite all of that, Pinkerton is still my favorite album of all time. I'd love to see you do a similar video on the sea opera (or lack thereof) and Ecce Homo. I feel like Ecce Homo now has the mystique that Songs From the Black Hole had in the 2000s.

I think so many of us love SFTBH because it’s like Pinkerton taken to the extreme, the lyrics and instrumentals are rougher, and the basic production makes everything feel more personal. I’ve listened to it most certainly as much, if not more than Pinkerton

@@alphalax7747 Well it isn't a finished album, I think it's more personal because of that. Rivers doing every voice, weird lyrics and rough instrumentation, it's like seeing halfway through the creative process rather than a perfect complete album. Also, despite being space themed, it's ultimately about relationships, and I remember Rivers saying somewhere that it was basically just an analogy for being on tour

  • @aaronwearsunderpants241

It’s really weird listening to the Alone version of Longtime Sunshine because it sounds really melancholic and almost hopeful towards the end when Rivers changes the one lyric before the final chorus and the strings (or oboe? I have no idea what instrument it is) kicks in. The Pinkerton Deluxe version on the other hand is so unbelievably soul-crushing and hopeless in the context of SFTBH (I’m pretty sure this is the version meant for the album). It gets even better with the acappella section that closes out the song which could be interpreted as Jonas’ past thoughts and memories of him on the spaceship flashing before his eyes as he’s swallowed whole by the supernova star which is even more depressing and always gets me sad on relistens.

  • @deatgr3623

    @deatgr3623

The alone version has honestly always felt like the more miserable one to me since it feels like a “real” version outside of the concept, the last lyric is the deluxe edition is clearly written for the ending of songs from the black hole, but the last line on the alone version is just fucking heartrenching. “Sometimes I wanna get in a car, close my eyes and drive real fast, keep on going till I get somewhere, where I can truly rest” has always read as overtly suicidal to me, the SFTBH version has him die sacrificing himself as a metaphor, the alone version he’s just saying he wants to die. It’s fucking gut wrenching and makes the final chorus that swells after it feel like a sort of last goodbye

I like your interpretation of long time sunshine, but I personally disagree with it. Despite what Rivers says about Jonas volunteering, I think the more compelling narrative interpretation is about Jonas self-immolating via supernova. To me, the best ending of the story has What is This I Find leading Jonas to a breaking point. Realizing the harm he's caused the people around him, in Long Time Sunshine he strands himself without the crew knowing as a way for him to "atone" for the abuse he caused. However, while burning, the voices of the crew are still there. His death will not fix anything, it will not heal the wounds he opened. So, even in death, he is still acting selfishly. It means that there's really no way out after hurting someone. There is no good way for the story of the Betsy II to end, it's bleaker and I think makes for a more interesting narrative.

I think SFTBH evolved from an idea Rivers had while recording Blue in 93, of a Gary Numan influenced synth album with that dog. style harmonies featuring a song he had just written called “Buddy Holly.” Then The Rentals just happened to release a Gary Numan influenced synth album with that dog. style harmonies, which Rivers stated as being one of the reasons he scrapped SFTBH.

For example I would really love to hear your take on My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade or maybe Dream Theater's Scenes from a Memory, another good choice would be Hot Fuss by The Killers, just to name a few. As much as I love all of your Weezer stuff I'd hate to see you typecast as exclusively "The Weezer Guy", you clearly have a lot of talent for this and I'd love to see you tackle more from different artists.

Songs From the Black Hole is a very interesting "what if" and I would highly recommend it to any fan of Pinkerton. I will say though, anyone who thinks that SFtBH would've been received better than Pinkerton (I've seen it said a few times over the years) are very much looking at it through a "grass looks greener" lens. As great as some of the songs on it are, "space themed rock opera" would totally have been doomed to fail. edit: Oh, and the coda for Long Time Sunshine is incredible

Love your analysis, it's a hard story to follow with so many drafts and Rivers voicing every character for most songs, but I think you did the best explanation I've ever seen. Though, I don't understand why Why Bother is left out of so many people's tracklists, it fits so well with the story, Jonas getting angry at Maria for cheating on her, he becomes miserable, and decides to die in the supernova. Longtime Sunshine even interpolates Why Bother, so I feel like it should be in everyone's tracklists, yet it's not.

It’s super fun (since there’s an incomprehensible amount of content on KZread) when you find a creator with this quality and talent when they’re still getting under 10k views on their videos. Keep it up my man! One day you’re gonna pop !

Another very well put video! Have you considered tackling fan made albums like homecoming or "unnofficial" albums like opposite sides of the same good ol' fence? I think those would also make for great video topics

I've lost interest around Maladroit era, but this demo album fascinates me, I never knew and I always thought Pinkerton was the second album and probably the best album of now the first four, nay, FIVE Weezer albums. The analysis you laid out is superb. I have one question though: what the hell was Waun doing during these events? Probably hanging out with the mechanoid is my guess.

I remember when Pinkerton came out, no one liked it. But I thought it was fantastic. Still one of my favorite albums to this day. Finding other stuff from that era is glorious.

Idk if anyone agrees with this but I liked Operation Space Opera’s version of the tracklist personally. There’s just something about it that I can’t put into words.

Some songs, yes, but most of the story-driven (often shorter, interstitial type) ones that connect the actual pieces of music were only made and played by rivers.

I'm sad that SFTBH didn't come out but at the same time Pinkerton is such a masterpiece, I don't think I could've lived without it. (pinkerton is currently my favourite album, one of the only few albums i can sit through and sing along and dance and do all my cringey little things without skipping a single song.

i love Weezer, and i love rock operas, so this is a really really interesting project to me, i would love to see Rivers pull a Beach Boys and finally complete the album in like 20 years, although i doubt it’ll ever happen
