What’s so weird about that? Like you’re never going to look back at a specific time in your life(if you haven’t already)and immediately have some of your best memories? Sure, there’s a ton of quality entertainment now but at the same time, there’s also some of the worst entertainment as well. Nothing “weird” about that!

Got to see it twice over the final year it was on the air. The day the final episode was taped, I (and many others) hung out by the stage door to see who'd come out. The only one I still remember clear as day was a beaming Taylor Hawkins (man that guy had a smile that could light up Times Square) who waved to the crowd before getting in his car and driving off.

I concur. While I am from the US I've lived mostly away since childhood. Letterman was not carried and I rid myself of a tv in '03. I remain grateful I was able to follow his program consistently online. He covered authors, musicians, and political figures and I stayed current. I enjoy his humanity, his brand of humor, his flaws and ability to admit mistakes and overcome. I miss both him and Ferguson.

While watching this, for some reason it crossed my mind to check and see if Dave's mom was still with us. Her appearances on the show were always very enjoyable. She came across as a very warm, genuine, good person. Sadly, she left us earlier this year, aged 95. That's the kind of innings in cricket that'll earn a warm ovation, sometimes even standing, as you make your way to the pavilion.

Stephen's good, but replacing a legend is a hard trick. Letterman and Leno combined never satisfied the Carson people.

Unfortunately here is Perth Australia, we do not get Conan. We used to, but I have not seen it for at least 2 years. I liked Dave and all Craig as both of them were on here. We only get Jimmy Fallon if you do not have Foxtel. I also get to see Jimmy Kimmel, but that is all unfortunately. Would be nice to have Conan on again.

As much as David would like to think his show had no viewers, it did. Though he has a dry sense of humor he is genuine and real to the core. So with that said, you do not stay on the air 33 years if you suck and Late Night will not be the same without him. Congrats on your retirement Dave you deserve it! Thanks for always being there when I turned on the TV when there was nothing else to watch at that moment.

I watched this episode live, re-watched in on the CBS website the next day, and am watching it again now. But by god if I don't well up a little every time I see it. The end of an era, the loss of a legend. He is one of the most important people to ever be on television. When Stewart left, I was crushed. Same with Colbert, Ferguson, etc. But there is no one that did it like Dave and he meant a lot to me even though I never met the guy, never will, and will probably never see him on TV again. Norm is my favorite comedian, and his goodbye to Letterman is exactly how I felt. Dave gave so much to us throughout an amazing career. Anyway, enough with the sap.

TheOnlyRealJohn I agree with everything. You hit the nail on the head. Norm is also my favorite comedian. Have you seen his video podcast? In my opinion. its the funniest thing on the screen since the early Late Show days. And, he just recorded an episode interviewing Letterman. It hasn't aired yet, but its coming up. But if you haven't seen it, there are two full seasons (youtube it). Greatest show ever. And its hard to explain to younger people just how important and influential Dave's show was. Letterman actually changed the way people interact in society. There is no one in entertainment more important. I love Conan, but Letterman will always be the king!

Its gotta be rewarding to have brought so much joy to so many. Thanks, Dave.

It's weird getting old. When this show first followed Carson, it was 1982. I was 12 and would sneak downstairs and watch it with the volume low until I could see the lights go out from my parents' bedroom. Letterman was like the Beatles of late night shows. He was so different and totally entertaining. Like taking Zsa Zsa Gabor on a date in a giant convertible Cadillac, just driving all over town hitting every fast food joint. Then parking, scarfing down twenty bags of food and just talking about the food, "oh you gotta try the chicken gravy on the taco delux..can I get a swig of your shake? Which one's that, the pineapple? Take a swig of the pineapple, then a bite of that bacon popper..."
