Welcome to the Letterman KZread Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. The language may strike you as quaint & flowery, the clothing comically lacey & ornate - but that’s how things were back in this colorful and now bygone era.

Colbert does a fantastic job with his show, and is a great successor to Jon Steward, Letterman, Carson, and all of the greats.

I remember watching his show while growing up during the 60s, 70s and so on. Later while working as an over the road truck driver, I drove into his hometown of Norfolk, Nebraska several times. Even spent the night there a few times.

I remember being a kid in the 1980s, too young to stay up and watch the show, but I would tune my little FM radio to NBC station and hold the speaker to my ear while in bed to listen to Johnny. A lot of the jokes were visual but it was still good to listen to.

What's amazing about this clip is that you can tell they were talking off the cuff, not micronoted to death. It just feels more natural.

I like the "Son" gag when Dave says Johnny met his mom 38 yrs. ago. In college I would watch Dave Letterman a lot to close out the day.

I always loved the El Monte background in this episode. For a short time, Dave was visiting L.A. and doing his show from there. Earlier in this episode, I believe he was reading letters from people and of course, doing his funny things out of them. One of them had a "mudslide" effect that caused the El Monte letters to slide down. I enjoyed that bit. I had the VHS tape of this episode.
