Fixing Brakes on a '68 Camaro: Hillbilly Engineering to the Rescue!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

There have been some hillbilly fixes in the shop but today might be next level. In our efforts to keep the cost low, we have to work with what we got when it comes to the braking system... and that is assuming any of it works at all.

Looking at this car when you fired it up to test for brakes, I think it is amazing what you took from a pile of rusty pieces and came up with - 2 Camaros - running and driving. My hat is off to you, man.. 🇨🇦

If this car came with standard drum brakes all the way around, and the lines are 1/4 inch lines it really doesn't make any difference which line is for the front brakes or the rear brakes although the standard is usually the front of the master cylinder is for the front brakes. There is no proportioning valve as there is no reason for one if you have drum brakes all the way around. There is of course the block where the brake light warning switch (the one that warns the driver if they lose brakes on either the front or the back and of course there is no total brake failure as the dual master cylinder is the design to enable the driver to have at least some brakes (imagine what would have happened when I had a brake hose fail on my 56 Chevrolet and the pedal went right to the floor, fortunately I was not going too fast when that happened and I was able to stop the car with the emergency brake handle). If you just want to only have rear brakes plug off the port on the master cylinder that feeds the front brakes (I generally used a fitting with a partial line and brazed it shut. This will isolate the feed to the rear brakes. I purchased a 72 Chevrolet 4wd truck and it was pulling real hard to one side on the front brakes. Well when I went to investigate I found that someone had blocked off the passenger side line with a small nail and of course it disabled that caliper. Years later when I was a RPS P&D Contractor I used the company van (mine was down for repairs) This braking system was a four wheel disc brake set-up and the rear calipers were metal to metal. Well I remembered the "nail trick" from before and hobbled down to my shop and blocked off the rear brakes and just used the front ones. Of course I took some tools with me in order to remove the nail when I finished my route and I gave management hell for not having a complete brake job done on that truck (the coordinator who sent that van out for brake repairs really did not know what he was doing). Really the things people do.🥸

I wouldn’t trade my 69 for every car you own and I’m not being mean I just really love mine. It’s hugger orange factory 4 speed and it came from California LOS plant and it was used in a bank robbery in California and they caught them here so my car is an Outlaw it took me 25 years to get it and I’ve had it 25 years so I love my ride. And I do what you do. Glad to see you save another one. Now give me a run down on that one. What is it I see the AC dash.

Dan! Only you can think of doing something crazy like that! Switching the front master brake line to the rear! ,pug off the rear brake outlet! All the years , that was working on cars! I never seen it done ever! I'm not saying it won't work! I just never - ever seen anyone do it - WOW! what next - hook a straight line all the way to the wheel cylinder - from the master brake unit - AND YOU HAVE ONLY REAR BRAKE WORKING, AND AND NOW YOU ONLY HAVE ONE FRONT BRAKE WORKING! SO NOW! ONE REAR BRAKE WORKS, AND ONE FRONT BRAKE IS WORKING ONLY ! This could work!, but it's DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THAT CAR 😮 , AND THAT'S WHY I LIKE WATCHING YOUR KZread CHANNEL 😮

I acquired a 1946 GMC 11/2 ton truck that was driven to Jacksonville Fl from Colorado back in the late seventies. Well the fellow that had it had installed an Oldsmobile engine with a TH400 automatic. He had mounted the master cylinder and booster up on the firewall and what he did was to convert the master cylinder lines into a single line feeding the brake system. Well after I acquired the truck I commenced to squaring away those brakes and found one (yes one) wheel cylinder that was not seized (on the rear brakes, dual rear tires). I split the lines and repaired all of the wheel cylinders (had to replace the rear cylinders) and retained the dual master cylinder setup with vacuum boost. Thing stops good now but can you imagine driving all the way from Colorado to Florida with one working wheel cylinder?
