Disassembling a '70 Chevelle : Prepping for Refurbishment

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A week or so ago I bought this 70 Chevelle for a SMOKIN' deal off marketplace. I didn't do too much close looking- I just knew I wanted it. So today we actually take a look at how much of a basket case this thing really is.

I do trunk first with wheel houses , then quarters, screw everything together dont weld any thing till it is all lined up then outer rockers, brace across door opening and trianglelate across body, remove frame body only weighta 4 or 500 lbs . I use 2 2x4 on edge in rear wheel house and 2 2x4 on edge at front body mount . Cut out floor short of seams . Slide new floor under use cherry picker to lift up and fit cutting a little at a time. I do 66 and 67 cutlass on my 29th car doing it this way. This one i have is a vert so i will remove everything from the rear of door forward to slide floor in the then line back up . . Keep up the great videos

I think on the SS you only have 3 sides with nothing along the bottom of the door glass. That gold on gold interior GM (like the inset in the video) had back in the day was gorgeous. I remember a '67 SS 396 Chevelle and a GTO in the neighborhood with that scheme and those cars caught the eye.

Hey Dan .. this is the one to do a body off restoration .. make a lift to go up to the ceiling by using the roof .. brace the door pillars some .. and lift body with a hoist .. slide frame out and complete the frame .. sand blast it and detail it and build the brakes and all .. slide the new floor on top of frame and lower the body down after cutting the old floor out .. proceed to weld the new floor in ....the roof lift could be straps that fit through the roof and then hook to the hoist in the ceiling of your garage.. I have done this and it works great .. turns out to be a professional job you will be proud of ..

DAN!!! I know you know what you are doing tho if you can just do the lower 12 inches of the quarter leave it all in ...that old yank steel is far better quality than the stuff you'll be putting in...The stamping is sharper and thicker metal by probably .3 of a mil. There is no need to go nearly as high as you are around the window etc..it's only crispy along the bottom, and the louvres next to the back light will be so much sharper on the original panel. You can stitch it along the belt line, and the rest of the quarter will be schweet. like you said the doors/trunk shut great. Leave as much of that stuff as poss. You know it will be easier. Great as usual...;D

It will look like a unibody car going down the road unless your measurements are perfectly dead on in length on each side. Inner and outer wheel houses are toast replace them and save yourself the trouble down the line. Really base model Malibu as it doesn’t even have green tinted glass. The piece you’re talking about for the back of the trunk is the tail panel that goes between the rear quarter panels.

I think it’s time you bring up the topic of tractor paint again. Maybe Alice Chalmers Orange with black racing stripes for this car?

I don't get why people complain about the wheels, it's a "roller", a "Roller", wait till the end, then complain, if there's a need to? ;-) Watching you deal with the windshield and back glass (they both look fine), my first thought is buy a couple blankets from a thrift store, wrap them up and store them somewhere out of the way.

You saw how you cut the bottom piece they sell that half piece all the way to the door don’t go all the way to the door. Just cut it like you said and that’s the way I did it in my Chevelle. I never did the whole full quarter I did it one time but, not again when my second car so I think you should do that look into it

I’m so excited about this chevelle build. I hope you don’t cut corners and really build it. These cars deserve it. I hope there are allot of videos on this car, you are so lucky.

I've heard that if you buy the whole trunk floor it is easier if one quarter panel is out. The trunk opening is too narrow to get one in in one piece

Dan, Daniel my brother... Excellent work! I was surprised by the lack of rust around the front and back windows when you pulled them. In my experience, most Chevelles are very prone to this. It makes me think this car is rusted from sitting somewhere in a field or a barn, and not from winter driving. It would also explain the strange rust patterns around the quarters. This is gonna be a nice one and I think it'll go easier than expected. 😊 Signed - Your friend, the Cancer guy! 😊

Dan - I know you don't like the chrome beltline trim. But you never see them with that trim. Might reconsider keeping it.
