Well done, Federico. I would add a couple comments if I may: 1: After pushing the valve in when you first install the tube, don't do up the nut yet. You can get an easier seat around the valve by pushing the valve base in. Do up the nut after everything has settled into place. 2: I don't let that little bit of air out of the tube. The round shape helps prevent the tube from creeping out under the bead. 3: As you get to the hard part, be sure to watch under the remaining bead to see if the tube is creeping out. Even though it will usually snap back in, it makes the last few inches more difficult than it needs to be. 4: Always just pump up to 60 pounds or so, then take the chuck off the valve, hold the wheel in both hands and spin it sighting along the bead. Both sides. It should be very even if you have a good quality tire. You can't tell just looking down from the side. 5: Wear gloves to take the wheel out (or else wipe your hands thoroughly). This way, you don't transfer chain gunk to your hands and then your rim. 6: Most important of all, (should have been the first suggestion) add talcum powder to the inside of the tire and to the tube before you even begin. EVERYTHING goes easier this way. Take it from someone who has done it a hundred times if any. Cheers on another engaging video. Your humble attitude is SO refreshing. Stay safe.

Great advice, Stuart! Well said. Federico, you did everything right, but looked frustrated when working the tire on the rim. I've found from changing a few thousand flats at the shop, first, press in one side bead first. Then put in the tube. You did all that. Then, starting at the valve, methodically tuck the loose tire bead in around the rim more or less evenly up both sides with both hands. The bead will seat snugly without pinching the tube, and there will be the most slack by the time you get to the top 3 inches, making it friendlier when pressing that last bit into place. The heels of the hands are much stronger than the thumb and fingers for that last herculean effort. You're pushing with forearms. It always worked for me, no matter how tight the fit. The talc really comes into play at this point. It allows the rubber to slip in place, lubrication. I guess plastic Smart tubes are slipperier, but I talc up the butyl spare before putting it in its sandwich bag, with a little powder loose in the bag to smear on the inside of the tire when changing on the road.

It was VERY real...

No need to be embarrassed. We’ve all been there…many times for me. I did notice that you started seating the tire starting from the valve stem area. Try the opposite; finish at the valve. The reason is that as you are pinching around the tire as you did to get the tire into the center channel of the rim (the smallest diameter), the valve is preventing a small but significantly impactful portion of the tire from getting fully into that channel. Instead, if you finish at the valve, the tire will be as slack as possible. It took me years to realize that I was overlooking that detail. It was a game changer for me on both standard clincher and tubeless tire mounting. Another point would be to use gloves. They give you better grip and protect your skin, not to mention keep you cleaner. When on the road, I pack a pair of nitrile gloves in my tool kit. They are light and take up little space. One last tip is that I find it can help to use the ground and your body weight as you pinch around the tire to encourage the tire to stay down in the center channel. You will have to pick the wheel up to finish the final bit of course. It’s a marginal gain but it think it’s a worthy technique when you need every little bit of slack in the tire possible. I hope this will help.

I always start seating the bead at the valve, and finish opposite side, for me less chance of damaging the valve. I am able to install GP4000’s on by hand, not easy, but possible. In comparison Vittoria Corsa’s almost fall on!

@@patrickparisienne1917 I agree. The valve is potentially more vulnerable when seating the tire near the valve last. In particular, I think there is a high propensity for the tube material to get wedged between the valve stem and the tire bead. This is why it is vitally important, no matter one’s method, that you inspect the bead all around before inflation. I’m very impressed by people who can change a tube in seconds, but generally, I always believe that it makes sense to be cautious and take your time if need be. With that said, I absolutely support your concerns about protecting the valve.

No need to be embarassed at all, Federico. Thanks a lot for showing the entire process in real time! It's always easier to edit it down to 5 mins and then stating that it is a piece of cake. :-) What I found helpful in order not to pinch the newly fitted tube is to "wiggle" the tire one complete round before pumping it up to target pressure - while checking on both sides that the tube is not stuck between the rim and the tire at the same time.

Very discouraging to hear you had two punctures on tyres that I have also recently bought, with the assumption that they would puncture less. Kudos to you for showing the real-time difficulties of installing these tyres, as I have heard they are very difficult to mount. My GP5ks weren't as hard to put on but you've reminded me I'll need my plastic tyre levers for these stubborn beasts.

Yes, it seems that sometimes I get waves of bad luck and I keep getting punctures, some other times they are less frequent. The struggle to fit the tyres is always there anyway 😅😫

@@Rome. Yes, Gatorskins are more puncture resistant, but don't perform near as good as the GP5000 or the 4 seasons. Much less confidence inspiring.

Another entertaining video young man. My procedure - *Air out and pinch the tyre on both sides until both beads touch in the middle (massaging) *Change the inner tube (obviously 🙄) *Replace tyre and tube - and repeat pinching the beads together, push valve in and off you pop

Thank you for the "young" 😂... Pushing the valve in is a great tip, I had to do it in the video without realising or mentioning it properly!

When I get punctures I sometimes wonder if it will just be easier to throw the whole bike away and just buy a new one when I've spent an hour chasing the damn bead around the rim or gotten everything seated only to find I've pinch punctured the tube with the tyre levers!

Great video. Liking the channel👍 I had a similar problem and found when fitting gp5000 at home heating the tyre bead with a hair dryer at the point just before you use your palms on the tyre makes it a lot easier to fit. Of course not possible on the side of the road but handy if your simply fitting a new tyre.

I know your pain, the gp5000 fits perfectly on some rims, and is a complete pain on others. Those tubes are very good tubes, i have a liner made out of the same material that i have tapped around the inside of my tire, those tubes are $36.00 a tube where im at. The liner is about $4.00 and and about a millimeter thick. I have a set of superteam 80mm rims, that the tires fit on with no problem, dont even need leavers. My 80mm zipps though, feels like im gonna break the rim trying to get the tire on, and off. I use the parktools leavers, took all the plastic off. A little unconventional, cause it exposes the metal. But it works so much better. And there super thin. Im very pleased that you brought up the direction of the tire, thousands of videos on youtube do not do that. Very nicely done.

Yes, those Pirelli tubes are quite expensive, that is why I decided to use 2 as spare only in the saddle bag. I always put a standard tube back on.

Greetings from Thailand. No need to feel embarrassed in any way. I too use Continental GP tires, and they are a beast to remove and put back on. You did an excellent job., No way could I put the tire on with out the use of a tire leaver. Take care and ride safely.

Great job, Federico. If I could reccomend - try Tufo Calibra Plus tires - they're light, non as pricey as Conti ones. Smooth when rolling, good traction on wet and dry, silent and no need to use levers when put them on. Very durable even on gravel pathways.

Hi Federico, that was painful to watch. When ever removing a tyre, push the tyre beads away from rim wall all the way round into the rim center channel. Always start removing the tyre at the valve area. When replacing the tyre start opposite the valve area ensuring the tyre bead is going into the center channel. Always finish installing at the valve area otherwise the valve will stop the tyre bead from sitting fully into the rim centre channel making the last bit too tight to get on. That applies to tube and tubeless tyres.

Also, @ 6:50, I put the second lever further away from the first (perhaps 15 cm) , catching the tire bead where it is still inside the rim. The rest is easy.

The alignment of the valve is a strange topic indeed. I have attempted to convince people to align the valve against numbers of where the PSI are, but the label seems to win due to aesthetics. Finding a valve is easier than finding the tyre pressure recommendations, but I suppose some will argue, I should already know what pressure I'm riding. I will challenge you for number of punctures in a year. My favourite days to get a puncture are after holidays where parades have gone through the streets (think broken bottles). Stay safe and keep riding.

Good video! Let me give you a secret tip if ur struggling to put a tire on. First thing is to warm up the side of the tire you are trying to put on by moving your hands quickly around the outside and inside of the tire wall. After that you are going sprinkle a little water from your water bottle into your hand along with some info your spit. Then rub along the inside of the tire all the way around. After that go ahead and put the tire on. It will be way easier. Make sure you do not wet the outside wall of the tire.

Hi Frederico I've had the same problem trying to seat tubeless tires, that last bit being a nightmare what I do now is warm the last bit up with a hairdryer for a few minutes making the tyre a bit softer and on it pops.

Thanks a lot for your video. My fingers still hurt a week after trying to put on my new gp5000 on my rims. I ended up going down to my local bike shop, so I'm a bit worried that I won't be able to get them off or on again, in real world situation.....Do you recommend any other tires which are much easier?

When new GP5000 are very hard to fit, when they have been in place for a while they are easier to refit. I would not go for another tyre, I tried Goodyear Eagle F1 and they were too soft for the winter. GP 4 Seasons are good in the winter, but not very durable. Just stick with GP5000, still the best.

Basically you need very strong hands or to warm it up and use washing up liquid. I found this to be one of the most difficult tyres to fit. The first time the tube formed a knot. I then used a narrower inner tube. These tyres didn’t pop when inflated on my Zipp 202 rims.

I tried to fit a couple of new GP5000 S tyres today. I needed levers to get the _first_ side on, then eventually gave up on the second. Took the tyre off and put my 5 years old GP4000 tyres back on...

I love gp5ks so much to the point that I buy wheels based on the ease of mounting them. I found they are so tight on some rims that they wont even seat at normal pressures (I am still talking about the clincher version), in that case it was a giant PR-2 wheelset, stock rims and they had to be warrantied anyway. Whenever I have acquire a new wheelset, first thing I do is try and mount a gp5k, if it takes way too long after a bit of practice, I will return/sell the wheels. I need to be able to remove/mount them very quickly if I get a puncture in some shit part of peckham.

Wow, that's dedication! I can understand it though, the GP5000 give you such a nice reassuring feeling. Whenever I think of putting something else on the Canyon I end up keeping them. I was thinking of 4 seasons for punctures, but haven't done it yet. Better to avoid dodgy areas 😂

@@fede1275 Yep, they feel great, fast and supple, for a race tyre the puncture protection is rather good. I used the 4 seasons a lot as well, in my experience they mount a lot easier than the gp5k. They last ages, puncture protection is very good, but the sidewalls are a lot weaker than the central tread (not that its been an issue). It hasn't been updated in a while, I imagine that won't be too far away now. If I remember correctly its based on a gp3k, so an update should bring down the RR and or increase the protection. Nevertheless I haven't found a better alternative to the 4s. Before the 4s I used Vittoria corsa/rubino controls which seem to cut very easily, I haven't had that issue with the 4s.

Like you I prefer road tyres at 100-120 psi, but maybe gravel tyres are a better bet. Less chance of skidding in the wet and they should be much easier to change. What’s your thoughts on gravel tyres as a more practical option? Especially if you like a bit of gravel during the ride.

GP5000 TL (Tubeless) first time in my live I exhausted the lifespan of the tires with a total of zero (0) punctures. For me the hassle of refilling sealant every 2 months or so (I live in a very dry environment) is a small pay compared to the benefits.

Apart from aesthetics... Main reason for lining the tyre logo up with the valve is to aid locating were a thorn or nail maybe lodged in the carcass after you've taken the old tube out and pumped it up, them id were air is escaping noting its distance from the valve, this should be a similar distance from the tyre logo, saving the fixed or replacement tube from re-puncture.

No...lining up the tyre markings with the valve helps identify where to check for any foreign objects in the tyre when you get a puncture, by using the inner tube puncture point as a reference.

Yeah… my GP5000s are usually ok, but definitely tight. Usually mostly fitted by hand with very slight gentle use of a lever for the last bit. GP5000TLs are nigh on impossible….

A good video would be how do you replace the tube in this tyre 30 miles into the mountains? You could add a sealant, but sealant can gum up the valve and you don’t want to be trying to unblock a valve in the middle of nowhere in the pouring rain ☔️

@@fede1275 it’s easy enough with soft flexible tyres, but have you tried it (in the field) with the GP5000s? They look like they have good puncture protection, but they are almost impossible to fit quickly and easily. I had a puncture 25 miles from home in a remote spot and I got lucky because I was using low psi CX tyres. I dread changing a GP5000 inner tube. It’s why I prefer my tubular wheeled bike. It’s so simple and reliable ☺️

@@fede1275 Jim Langley commented that he no longer recommends Continental because they’ve shrunk their tyres for tubeless compatibility. Have a look at his channel. He suggests some GP5000 are too small to be usable. I agree. I wish I’d never bought them. L

You have been unlucky with the tyre/rim combo there - Conti GP5000 go on fine on a lot of rims. Although Conti do have a reputation for being difficult to fit. When they wear out consider Specialized they are easier to fit.

My only piece of advice contrary to what most people are saying here is.... stick to clinchers! If the process of fixing a puncture on clinchers is somewhat time consuming for you, don't you ever give tubeless a try. You will hate it.

@@fede1275 I only use tubeless (Maxxis) on my trail MB because the puncture risk to bead-seating frustration ratio is positive. There's no way I would ever use tubeless in my Canyon Endurace. I use GP 5000 clinchers with my road bike and my experience with them is great but I already heard horror stories with setting up beads on GP 5000 TLs. Unless you puncture every month because the streets you ride are riddled with debris, road tubeless is more of a hassle than a blessing.

Use tubular its the best for weight and too fast Regards

Continental 5000 tire are bitch to on , even alloy rims . When back to Continental 4000 , much easier to put on .

@@fede1275 Thanks Federico for that! If you have a top-end bike, you do not go cheap on anything! I recently mentioned my top-end clothing which was not to brag(it took me until I was 49 years old to afford my dream bike & clothing!). I even sourced Challege "Seta"(silk) tubulars from ProBikeKit, which are expensive, but got a great deal, and pay in 4 months(interest-free!). Veloflex are Italian-made, and are excellent, but trying Challenge, which like Vittoria are made in Thailand! Did you know that Santini have got the contract to make the "Tour de France" Jerseys, starting next year? They lost the "Giro" Contract a few years back to Castelli, but hopefully will get it back. Don't hold the wheel at an 90° angle while trying to fit the tyre, you will not be able to apply full force- put it against a solid surface while pushing from above utilizing your body weight, and minding the lever principle. :p This video might help: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pql6ssyraNq-mKQ.html

Thank you, I was following another video advice where the 90 degrees position was supposed to be better to push with the palms. But I'll try everything to make it easier 😅

@@fede1275 It's fine to do that unless you are fighting with the last few centimeters of the tyre. These are the tough bits.

This is why I will never have carbon wheels

Stramaleddetti gp 5000, li odio ma nessun'altra gomma e' cosi' veloce. Adesso li provo tubeless sperando di salvarmi dalle forature, perche' di fatto e' impossibile mettere una camera d'aria se ti trovi con una foratura in mezzo al nulla....😡

Lo so, ma se poi buchi con i tubeless e non tiene allora.diventa ancora più difficile. I GP5000 TL sono ancora più duri mi sembra!
