Fitting BRAND NEW Continental GP5000 S TR Tubeless Tyres
Спорт
Fresh from winning Paris-Roubaix in horrendous conditions Continental has launched the brand new GP5000 S TR tubeless tyres which are now compatible with hookless rims and come with claims of being lighter, faster, tough and easier to fit. I put them to the setup challenge to see how easy they really are to fit

What do you think of Continental's new tyres? Also, since making this quick video I've had another go at inflating with a regular track pump and had more success than in the original video kzread.info/dash/bejne/goCJzrqmlJjceqQ.html

I love the new tubeless GP5000 tyres but.......fitted to my Wheel Tech carbon rims was an absolute nightmare of sore hands and eventually tyre levers. Tight, tight, tight! The good thing was they inflated first go with a track pump. Such a comfortable tyre in 28.

If it's half that easy to mount these new Conti's on my ENVE 5.6's I'll be over the moon. I broke multiple levers trying to mount the existing 5000TL's (which I literally had to cut off to remove, they were so tight).

I think half of the problem are the 303S wheels which in my case have been the worst wheels to mount a tubeless tire. Other wheels I have are DT Swiss and almost any road tubeless tire can be mounted with regular track pump.

@@raimo8882 I had issues mounting Schwalbe Pro Ones (I had to use a high pressure tank to get them to inflate) on the 303S and they still didn't "pop"
Thank you David, looking forward for your comments on it. Might give it a try after my Pirelli worn out in the near future.
Dear Conti: just take my money already! I loved the old GP 5000 on my first entry-level alu Canyon bike. Looking forward to fitting these on my Zipp 303S and cruising around Lake Geneva on them. As the Swiss roads are generally extremely smooth, I expect them to be FAST!
I've really liked the GP5k in TL, and if they're easier to fit (which IMO fitting was one of the biggest drawbacks of the old GP5k) and are even more puncture resistant, then they're a year round winner! Nice to know they were used in PR as well; as this year would have been brutal on tyres... Great announcement 😀
Great stuff. Been using tubeless on my road bike for around 4years, originally Schwalbe and then onto the GP 5000. I have Reynolds rims, never had any issues mounting these tyres. Looking forward to the new tyres when these wear out. I also use Orange Seal Sealant - absolutely awesome! One thing David, when you tried using the track pump, you left the tyre on the ground which means the air was more likely to escape due to the tyre deformation. If you hook the tyre off the ground, you may have better luck.
Removing the valve core from my wheels enables me to inflate tubeless tyres with a standard floor pump. Perhaps a tip to share with those without a Lezyne air tank/air compressor. Thanks for the vid.
never had a problem inflating tubeless with a standard track pump. The problematic area is where the tubeless valve sits in the centre well blocking part of the tyre bead from going into the centre. What I do to prevent air leaking out whilst inflating is just squeeze the tyre bead around the tubeless valve and press down a bit on the tyre with one hand to maintain an airtight chamber whilst pumping with the other hand and it will inflate. Once the bead moves into place then pump with both hands. Works everytime for me with no need for manic, fast or vigerous pumping either.

Nice video. I know what I want for Christmas. 👍🏻🇨🇦
Great video, looking forward to these being available soon, about due to change my current GP5000TL so good timing. My only point would be I suspect you would have had a better chance of seating with the valve core out on the normal track pump though (has to come out anyway for sealant...), which allows the air in faster. I've only once in 5 years of using tubeless for MTB and road had to revert to my compressor.
Hi David ! I'm glad the hookless compatibility issues are a thing of the past! I own a pair of those 303s wheels and i was disappointed to learn that continental tyres weren't compatible with them So yeah, that's great news. Cheers from a french subscriber👍

I bet there are a number of us who are happy Conti now have a hookless set up, so 303 and SLR1 owners.
I thought this video was fake by how easy you got the 2nd bead on, but tried putting it on the way you did and it was as easy as you showed it to be. Thanks for the vid!
I've been riding Contis since 1987. I do have Vitorria gum walls for my 1980s vintage, but for serious riding, I feel most confident with Conti tires.
Just bought these tires. Putting on some Reynolds AR 41x db wheels. 21mm internal rim width. My current Pirellei Pzero Race TLR 28mm were a breeze to install just the same. Thanks for the video. Hoping for the same results with the new Continentals in a 30mm size. I''ve heard a lot about how hard the tires can be to install, but my gut tells me that the previous versions legacy is just continuing on. With most manufacturers getting onboard with the new ETRTO I think there is now a standard that wheel and tire manufacturers have to aim for, which is good for everyone.

These new GP5000 tyres are MUCH easier to install as they comply with the latest ETRTO standards which the previous ones didn't so installation is a breeze
Good video David. I have a set of 303 firecrest with Michelin's which are way better then the Pirelli's having ridden a set for a year, maybe when I need new skins I'll check out the Conti's. Also David glad to see the race winner riding tubeless.
Using GP5000 TL in 25mm right now and very happy with them, so I trust Continental's new tubeless tires will also be top notch.
That ease of installation alone is worth the upgrade. The only reason I don’t already use GP5000
With a track pump it helps to lift one side onto the bead half way and turning it around and doing the other half to get a seal
I find them really good tyres and I ave clocked some good KMs on the TL but fitting them on Bora wto is a major struggle. It would be interesting to see how this new version would fit easily with this hoops. My new tyre now is the Maxxis high road TL, fits easily and beads soon.
The biggest battle in my head when choosing my new wheelset was if I get the 303S, I will have to give up my Contis... I did it anyway because after seeing how many wheel manufacturere were looking into hookless wheels, it would only be a matter of time before Conti came round. And I got to try a couple of different brands in the meantime. Can't wait to get the new Contis on my 303S wheels!
The real challenge would be to fit them into Mavic UST!
Great channel and content. About the conti, what is the measured width of the tyre?
Just replaced my old Conti TLs with these new ones and was amazed how easy they went on
Fitting any GP 5000 variant is a hassle in my experience, nice to see the improvements they made...
i cant find your ride review of these that u mentioned would come in future vid?
Will these work with mavic cosmic UST? Easier to fit than the older versions?
was fairly easy on my firecrest 303 hookless. but somehow the rear tire loosing pressure quite quickly (the front is fine?). any hints?
My old Conti's won't fit on my aero wheels. It looks like a big improvement. I have a brand new pair of Conti's setting in storage,that I can't even use! I look forward to getting my hands on a pair.
Seated a set earlier tonight on a set of DT Swiss r500 rims. Didn't have any issues. Pretty easy to get on with levers (save your hands and pry on bit by bit). Should seat with a track pump. Mine did and every tubeless set up ive had over the past 5 years has. Conti, Vittoria, Maxxis, all relatively easy to get on. Lovely ride quality.

If you are struggling that much, save your money on an inflator and put it to a compressor, where you can use it for multiple house hold tasks.
David, did you ever publish a ride review video?
Do you seat them first then pull the valve core and add sealant then pump them up again?
Any feedback on fitting these on Bontrager Aeolus 5.0....on my Madone???
I drive a wonderful tour, but 10 kilometers is forrest/stone road, so i drive Conti Prix 4season to be save ... is this new GP5000 S TR tubeless as save as the 4season?
how does the tire feedback compare with the Schwalbe Pro One Addix?
New tyres have already "won" high profile races. Conti GP will continue to dominate the market, head and shoulders above the competition. Demand for these will be through the roof.
Finally hookless compatible 🥳

Hi David, thank you for this. I've had a mixed experience with the GP5000TL for the last two years, no roadside road repairs needed but they're a nightmare on 3 sets of rims that I have, this frustration around fitting and removal has me running clinchers on my summer bike but I persevere with tubeless on the winter one for puncture protection. The GP5000TL lose about 10psi over a week so I check pressures before each ride. Can you report back on their pressure retention over the few weeks?

Just mounted some GP 5000 TL’s, they were the hardest tires I’ve ever mounted, if I would have known of these 5000 S TL’s I would have waited, I hope I don’t have a flat on the road, tubings the 5000 TL’s would be extremely hard and time consuming
Loving your channel as I get back into cycling after a few years away from the sport. I’m a tubeless noob, and wondering if you have a video that discusses the pros/cons of tubeless. I hear about tubeless having much better flat protection but the thought of repairing tubeless on the side of the road makes me pretty hesitant. Are they actually good enough that riders aren’t carrying tubes anymore?
@davidarthur
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I need to work on a tubeless pros and cons video soon. I still carry two spare tubes with me as a matter of course but touch wood I've only had to put a tube in a failed tubeless tyre once in say 5 years of road tubeless and riding my bike every day
@patrickparisienne1917
2 жыл бұрын
The tubeless thing keeps pulling at me, until I realise you still need to carry a spare inner tube as you would with clinchers. So I just run clinchers with quality Schwalbe butyl tubes, but I run 30ml of sealant inside them as well as insurance. This has saved me twice from having to stop and change a flat…
Hey, I noticed that the tire you are installing is perfectly round which is not usual when buying a tire. With all the folds, it is much harder to install the tire on the rim. Have you inflated the tire on a rim with a tube first to give it it's perfect shape ?
Hi - where can we buy these? I haven’t found them in stock. Thanks
So how is the riding experience so far? Thx!
Thanks David! A question: did the beads stay locked in place when you delated to put in the sealant? I also have a set of 303S and one of my favorite tires, the Schwalbe Pro One Evo Addix, will come unseated when deflated, which is a bummer.
@riyadmobeen
2 жыл бұрын
I have the same issue. I could not get them inflated on my Zipp 303s and they never "popped". When deflated they popped into the wheel well. Had to use a high pressure tank to get them inflated and then seated. What was your strategy?
@JustOneRedSoloCup
2 жыл бұрын
@@riyadmobeen I feel your pain. I had the identical issue with the same set of Schwalbe Pro One Evo Addix (700x28). I have to use an AirShot cannister at its maximum 160 psi pressure to get the Schwalbe beads to seat (presta valve core removed), and after the beads were seated, I left the cannister attached and did not release the connection until after the tire sat around for at _least_ 15 minutes. Then I'd slowly release the remaining air pressure via the tank cannister relief valve and the beads would remain seated. It sounds ridiculous, but it's been the most consistent method for keeping the tires from deflating. Also, half the time, I had sealant in the tire prior to inflating to seat the beads, and zero sealant added the other times. Either way, the 15 minute wait under pressure seemed to have the most success. Good luck!
@user-lg2jm9zg6l
2 жыл бұрын
@@riyadmobeen I never had that issue - they would seat pretty easily, with the witness line visible all the way around, but they would unseat once the pressure got down to 5-10psi, which made checking/adding sealant (through the valve stem) a pain in the butt. Eventually, I got some MilKit valves so that I could keep ~20 psi in the tires, keeping them seated, while doing sealant maintenance, but those valves weren't completely trouble-free, either (more prone to gumming up, etc).
Any chance you could link the store that has stock, you said in the video you'd leave it below?
I was able to seat mine with a Topeak Mini pump on a hooked carbon fibre rim. I don't know if it is my weight, as I am a gravitationally challenged individual, but the rear tyre suffers, almost, daily punctures and I am constantly reinflating it and my seat stay is covered in sealant. No issues at all with the front though.
How hard are these to fit compared to the clincher version?
Hi David, thanks for another brill video. RE: this new 5000 TR, do you reckon it is an easier fit on Mavic USTs or a darn nightmare like their previous TL release? It was impossible to fit those.

@@davidarthur Taa, David!
Just picked up a pair of these. I can’t even get the first bead on my DT 62mm by hand. I would suggest these are not compatible with the 62 MM DT carbon tubeless that came on my BMC. While I’m sure I would eventually get them on in my workshop, I seriously doubt I could install them with a tube on a cold day in the field.
You said the carcass of the tire feels thinner. Do you think the center of the tread (where it's actually contacting the road) is thinner? If they made it thinner (than the old one, which was 2.8mm), that wouldn't be a very good thing for longevity...
I tried to fit the old ones and to say it was one of the most frustrating experiences you can have is an understatement. I had to resort to taking it to the local bike shop who had a equally frustrating time but got them on. Is there a danger in them being so easy to fit on hookless rims? I thought in an emergency the tighter fit would help prevent the tire rolling off. My Enve hookless rims with Pirelli tlr race tires are not that easy to fit but not too terrible that I am frustrated. On a separate note is the 73psi max pressure for both hooked and hookless? 73 psi is max for hookless, it's 93 psi for hooked - Even hooked rims have their limits but it's higher than hookless, but with wider tyres there's really no need to go that high. Provided rims and tyres are designed to the same standards there should be no concern on safety. The old idea of making a tyre tight on a rim was just a lazy workaround the lack of standards

Keen to understand the difference between these and the old TL - did you try fitting the TL to the same wheels? Are these much easier?

the old GP5000 TL is not hookless compatible..zipp 303s rim is hookless type..

You can't fit the old tyres to a hookless rim (I know some tried it) but Continental specifically advised against it. I had tried the previous tyres on many rims and there were mostly always a pain to fit. So on first impressions these are much easier to fit

@@amirulhidayatmd aha - for David Arthur, please can you try and compare fitting both tyres to the same wheel. I like the GP5000 but given how hard they are to fit I'm about to swap to Goodyear.

I'm not sure how useful that really is because these new tyres replace the old TL tyres, and we all know how difficult those were on hooked rims
After a season of tubeless, getting punctured several times and calling my wife to pick me up I gave up. I’m going back to tubes at least I can pop a new tube CO2 and ready to go. Maybe I’ll try again down the road but not for me.
I hope they make a black-letter version.
