the tipp about loosening the valve was ultimately what enabled me to fit a very tight tire, thank you.

Tip: make sure you've had a meal before attempting this because it takes up a lot of energy!

Thanks for this excellent video. I just ordered these for my bike and appreciate the fun and games coming this weekend.

Yeah I also have a tip regarding these tyres. I bashed them and the wheelset with a hammer and then poured gasoline over the leftovers and set it al on fire. It didnt help seating the tyre but it sure was satisfying.

Very nice, thank you for the tips, I was starting to think this tire would not fit my rims!

Of all the brands of tires I have for my bikes the Continental tires have consistently proven the most cantankerous of the lot to install. I agree they seem to have a very robust bead on them which is the probably the reason they can be so hard to install or for that matter uninstall. I have 20”, 24”, 26”, 27.5” tires from slicks to heavy tread (tube and tubeless)and to do road side repairs from flats has been a constant ordeal for me lasting 90 minutes or more. You have provided a number important issues that I need to apply when doing these tires in the future, thanks a lot.

That's pretty much my technique. However, I HIGHLY recommend a tool called a Bead Jack. It will make your life easier. I also recommend applying a diluted soapy water solution to the bead as this will help the bead slip into place plus it has the added benefit of revealing any areas where the air is leaking out once the tire is inflated.

Hey Salt Trader, it's our pleasure and now you know for life :-).

Just moved an old schwable pro one from my front Aero Wide+ 60 onto the rear and then fitted a new GP5000 25c onto the front - all with the Stan's Race sealant. Following this and Chris Opie's video .. and it turned out to be a total underwhelming experience. It was a piece of cake. Sure you have to work the bead over the rim but I've literally had worse experiences with other rim\clincher tyre combos. Thanks for all the pointers in the video and making a great wheelset

Thanks for the video. I tried to put these tyres on a Mavic Ksyrium Elite, first bead went on ok with fingers but even after all suggestions I was driven to using levers and bent the rim. HOWEVER, I put the tubeless tyre on the only clincher rim I had that it would go on (with a tube) and pumped it up to 120 psi and left it for about a month. When I got the Mavic wheel back with the new rim, I tried again and it went on, still with levers, but with a lot less force. Give “pre-stretching” a go.

You're a freaking wizard. Speny like an hour trying to fit this tire. Only got one side before giving up. Going to try this tomorrow.

An easier way to get the last bit of bead in is stand the wheel vertically in front of you, with outside bead facing your right foot. Then put your right heel on the remaining outside bead. Then gradually lean the wheel to the left away from your heel. As you do this, your heel will lever the bead to the inside of the rim. Much easier than using your hands and fingers.

But wtf would anyone use tubeless tires. The sealant lasts from 1-4 mths only. Then you have to take the wheel off and scrape it out, then reapply. You still have to carry a spare tube in case the sealant doesn't work.

Longtime Conti 5000 rider, have gone through 8-10 of them now. My takeaway: you never know what Conti5 you're going to get out of the box. One is a snap; next one is a bear. I infer there's variation in their manufacturing quality control. My local bike shop confirmed that take. Conti 5 install can be even tougher on a carbon wheel. This vid's EXCELLENT tips, plus a Cushcore Bead Dropper: all I've got. Also, strongly advise, if you choose Conti5000s, DIY, so you know your tire. You don't want to be stranded on the road changing a stubborn Conti5 for the first time. Make sure you don't have a super tough bead BEFORE you go on a multi day ride on this model.

That worked. I am absolutely stunned. I fought these things for an hour before watching this video. I had my eyes closed, giving it all my strength, cursing you for making it look so easy, and I honestly thought I'd broken a spoke when I heard that pop. Bonus tip for those still struggling: Wear a good pair of grippy construction gloves!

Thanks Jon, and do give it a go next time around mate. Sometimes for wheels that are tapped, one other thing that helps is making sure the tubeless tape is right at the centre of the rim well. The best way to make sure this is right at the bottom is to get a clothe, and with it wrapped over your thumb, press down hard on the tubeless tape to 'rub' it onto the rim surface. This will lower the circumference of the tubeless tape on rim which will help with tyre installation.

Excellent. Use warm soapy water too. It will help get the bead over the rim as well as seat the bead evenly and quickly while inflating.

this is a great video. i'm not really obsessed with wrenching on my bike but knowing how to install tires quickly is super important. picked up a nice tip or two from this video and appreciate it. i've been running the hutchinson fusion5 galacktik tires because i found them a lot easier to install than schwalbe pro one, but i'll give gp5000 a try once my current tires wear down

Having ordered the Aero Wide+ 50s and GP5000s I was a bit worried I wouldn't be able to fit them. Not sure what all the fuss was about, they went on pretty easily (25 front, 28 back). Sure they needed "walking" on, but nothing too strenuous. Also managed to inflate them first time with an ordinary track pump.

Nice technique! This is showing more promise for my tough installation 28mm Grand Prix 5000 TL on Bontrager TLR alloy rims. Do you have any tips for, when you use both hands on one side, to keep the other side from rolling off the rim?

Hi Nick. Yes. Try and get the bead as tight as you can when 'walking in'. From here, go to one side and try to work in with the palm technique. If the far side starts sliding away, go to that side and try here (as you have worked the other side in a bit, this should 'grab' and stay in place). If the bead still wants to slide, use one hand to hold the sliding side in place and work the other side with just one hand. When doing this, be very firm as you want it to catch. Work as much as possible to get this side in and the tyre might go on from here, if not, go to the other side and start rolling in. The tyre normally goes on from here. If the bead doesn't want to catch at all and keeps sliding away, you might have to use a plastic tyre lever to help get the bead to catch. The best technique is to get the bead close to the valve and hold in place with your thumb. On the opposite side, work the bead in with the tyre lever but do this right at the far edge. It might take a couple of goes to catch (depending on wheel/ tyre make) but once it does catch, you can now use the palm technique :-). I hope this helps Nick and I'll do a video illustrating this as easier to show. Alan.

i can second this video i mounted my 32c gp5000 and i didnt believe it how easy they went up.... also they aired up with a simple floor pump. i was so happy it was so fast cause i wanted to go ride haha

Really ensuring the bead was in the center channel and loosening the valve really saved me. No soap water or air compressor needed!

Did all that with my Conti GP500TL (32mm) tyres but it wasn't enough. I had to put on a stout pair of gloves to save my delicate palms AND use a hair drier to soften up the rubber. After a year of using these tyres, I have bunked out because I am concerned that one day I may have to reseat them at the side of the road.

I got blisters on my palms from watching this lol) I popped mine on with Crankbros Speedier Levers - made the job that much easier.

Is the video tire 25c or 28c? I gave up after inserting the 25c into the slr0 wheel. I will try again later along with the video. Thank you for a good video.

Hi Jae-shin. It's a 25c tyre. I know the SLR0 wheels are tight and is say when fitting the last bit of tyre, try to do it quickly and aggressively as the bead will stretch. Good luck Jae-shin 💪

Have you encountered any rims where this tire won’t fit? I have a set of Dura-Ace C24s tubeless rims and no matter how hard I tried, they just won’t mount.

can't you push the bead into the centre of the rim? and then just use two thumbs to push the last bit over like I do with MTB tyres?

I just brought these exact same tires, I tried installing them, couldn't do it. I'll try your way.

Thank you for the video.. It help with the tips, but still after 2 hours no way to fit.. so disspointed :(, being using swalbe pro one and hutchinson fusion 5 and much better to install...

Is the tubed version any different or just as hard to get fitted onto the wheels?

I am wondering the same. Have you tried the tubed version of gp 5000?

Be sure you've preselected the right gear for your bike before mounting this tire on, your fingers wont shift a thing afterwards.

Is there any way we can get KZread to remove all the other howto videos? I've spent half an hour watching videos from channels that I generally trust and my thumbs and fingers are killing me. Finally I watched this and honestly, it took me 5 mins and it was so easy that I wondered what all the fuss was about!

Hi g gg, thanks for the comment. 13mm internal is very narrower and it'd be worth dropping Xentis a line to check tyre compatibility.

Have you tried this with a carbon rim? An aluminum rim will deform slightly and might make it easier to install. I installed these tires on carbon rims and tried this technique to no avail. I futzed around with levers for an hour for each one to get them on in the end.

Hi Joe, thank you for the comment. Yes, if you use the same technique, you should be able to get them onto a carbon rim also. One tip I would recommend here is if the rim has tubeless tape, just make sure the tape is pressed right to the bottom of the rim well as when the tape is installed, sometimes it's not very tight which keep the centre slightly raised = smaller diameter for the beads to sit in. I hope this helps.

Holy hell. I know you messed your fingers up installing that tire. Tighter than a nun’s behind.

I found it difficult to disassemble the frame to the point that I cut it off.

I've fought for 2 hours now my tire is heating in the bathroom with the heating on 40°C hope that works

I weren't able to install the tire even WITH a lever. Ended up using a hairdryer to soften the tire up

I’m interested in why you stick with Conti’s when they’re so difficult to fit. So many good brands out there that fit so much easier. I’ve been using Hutchinson Fusion’s on three different sets of wheels (all different brands) tubeless with no problems at all. Watching this just makes sure I never buy GP’s.

Hi Martin, thank you for leaving a comment. It really depends what you are looking for from this wheelset. The Wide+ 32s are superlight for the depth/width and with most 25mm tyres, these will offer really good aero gains as the tyre comes up narrow than the widest point of the rim. If you want a bit more comfort and still roll fast, a 28mm tyre will of course offer increased volume but for aero gains, the GP5000TL does run tight to stated tread width and comes up just under the 30mm mark, and as such, this would be my choice of you wanted to run 28mm tyres 🙂. Scribe Cycling thank you very much. I’ll follow your advice. The wheels have been perfect, still true, bearings and free hub running like new. I have put 12,000 km on them. I’m waiting for some sub 1300g 40mm rim carbon disc brake wheels from you👍👌😀

When I do this I have zero skin left on my hands

I got the first bead on without issue but when it gets tight and I try to roll the edge into the rim with my palms just as you're doing the other edge comes out and I just go in a circle going no where. This is on a Shimano ultegra aluminum wheelset.

If this happens, it's usually because the tyre is coated with a silicone like, protective spray which is slippy. When you get this 'bead slip', try using one hand more to the centre of the unfitted tyre section to put pressure on the bead (using palm to pull bead upwards). The pressure usually locks the bead into place and with the other hand, start working from the edge with your other hand. Once you get a small section on from here, the bead will lock on and you can work through the process from here.

@@ScribeCycling thanks for the reply! It was impossible at first with brand new tires, but now after probably 1200 miles they are pretty easy to get on and off the rim with a pair of tire levers. There's no doubt in my mind that I'd be able to fit a tube inside out on the side of the road now.

Are continental gp 5000 good for winter ?

Personally, I think the GP5000s are fantastic tyres for all-year riding. I used the GP4000s for many years before the GP5000TL came out and they are just seem like the tubeless version of a very similar tyre. The compound is very grippy so even on wet days, the traction is excellent, and as the carcass is heavier in design (for tubeless-ready), they wear really well. Hence, yes I would recommend these for winter riding in wet conditions. For icing/ snow conditions, you'd need a more suitable tread pattern of course.

So I'm assuming that's why I heard continental Tires hold air without the sealent because the beads so thick.I rather have tubeless tires without the sealant than have sealant. I don't know how much is this is true but I heard the sealent is bad on carbon fiber .

The seal is pretty tight and you can run without sealant; for a short period of time, however you won't have any puncture protection of course. We use the Caffe Latex Effetto sealant and it's completely fine with the carbon fibre.

Not for this video, but we put the sealant into the valve hole, inflate to max tyre PSI and spin tyre to cover the inner surface. When the tyre is spinning, always make sure to rotate the wheel just beyond 90-degrees each way to make sure the side walls are coated.

This tyres are fitting nightmare. I did it yesterday two hours. Every Conti tyres which I ever had was nice for fit, include tubeless ready terra trail. I don't know why this ones are so bad for fitting. I broke two pouting levers with it.

That’s great and all, but I’ve found removing the tire is even harder. bead is stuck and won’t budge so I can’t even get a lever in the space to pry it loose.

Hi MrEndocytosis, Pro One by any chance? The rubber compound on Pro Ones is quite soft and sometimes, the bead wedges below the hook over time. If the bead is hard to break, if you completely deflate the tire and opposite the valve hole, grip the tire between your fingers and thumbs. Press really hard with your thumbs to push the bead away from the side wall and quickly slide your hands about 1-inch to either the right or left, and press hard again. Do this 3-4 times in a row. The key here is to be very aggressive when you are pushing with thumbs. If the bead does not pop off the first side, spin the wheels around and do this on the other side. There has only ever been one wheel I've had to spin the wheels around. Give it a go MrEndocytosis and let us know how you get on!

@@ScribeCycling It was actually a regular GP5000 on a TL rim. The SOB wouldn’t budge, I finally pried it loose using the technique you described, and a hair dryer as well on all except the last bead. By that point, I had lost a pretty good chunk of skin and I called it quits and vowed never to use those rims again.

Nice Video. But still this tire is a nightmare to put on. Took me 2 hours of pain. I used finally also soap and heating the tire.

I did it without water and soap it took me 3 hours for 1 entire set.... horrible

On a rim where I can barely get the first bead on, I've resorted to putting a tube in there first, so there is no tubless valve to deal with. Then inflate the living crap out of it, leave it in the sun for an hour, remove the tube and "usually" the tire has relaxed enough to be able to mount it with a tubeless valve.

i just use the lever to get it off the rim, but can hand massage them on.

Sorry but watched this several times, stopped and did it step by step. Back is buggered from leaning over the tyre, hands and fingers no longer function due to being badly bruised, think I may have broken a finger. Giving up going to the bike tomorrow, had conti before and never had this much trouble

one of the fears of tubeless rim/tire set up is when you have to remount the tire on the road. now, one less thing to fear to go tubeless.

Great point Khon. When the tyre is fitted initially, the bead relaxes over a short period of time, so they're much easier to get on the second time :-).

Tried your technique and gave up !! Used tyre levers to fit the 28mm GP5000 TL tyres on my Cero AR30 EVO.

Hi Clifford. Wow, they must be a really tight fit as the 28s are easier than the 25s! If the Cero wheels come with rim tape, sometimes if this isn't installed really tightly, the beads aren't quite into the centre of the wells. If this is the case, if you get a rag of some sort and cover your thumb, all you have to do is press down quite firmly on the rim tape to squeeze this into the well so the tape touches the very bottom. Worth checking Clifford.

Ironically my GP5000 were a doddle to fit! Struggled with wire beads from other makes.

GP 5000 on Giant SLR were a bitch to mount.

Try that on a Wheel Science carbon rim and your fingers will bleed. Where yours gets tight, on the Wheel Science rim it will be a hell of a lot sooner. I left mine in the sun for 30 minutes and still struggled with levers.

Not easy. I just brought my Grand Prix 5000 clinchers to the bike shop. Cost $15 per tire. Used Pirelli Smart Latex Tubes. The Continentals are tricky and even though the latex are lighter and less prone to punctures they are easier to pinch as they are super light during installation. It was a bit of a challenge for the bike shop guys but they did a great job.

Bet you can't do this on a Reynolds AR80 without editing the video

So how come everybody seems to be getting tips from this vid and its supposed to be easy. Yet ofcourse i cant do it anyway. Where do u put ur fingers? I cant do it and want to punch something extremely hard.

What's wrong with using plastic tyre levers for that last bit? You are not going to pinch a tube and plastic levers are highly unlikely to scratch your rims 😐

What a ball ache!! Sooner just use a cheaper tyre that goes on and off easy.. all that messing with contis just to try and be 0.5mph faster on average speed 😂

This guy peels coconuts with his bare hands. I am old and feeble and had to use levers for these tires.

Now show us how to take it off. I read it's next to impossible with these tyres.

The easiest method is to use 2x tyre levers. Break bead on one side and slot 1x tyre lever in line with the spoke to the left-hand side of the valve, then slot the other in to the right-hand side of the valve. Lever one tyre lever down and lock to the spoke. Lever the other tyre lever down to lift bead over side wall, remove tyre lever (bead will remain in the same place) and repeat ~every 2 inches to get bead completely over the side wall. It's actually not that hard Andrew but you do need the levers for this part.

Sound quality terrible - wind rumble! Otherwise a useful guide.

I've fitted a lot of tyres to many rims and with the right technique, you can get most on with hands only. Give it a go Steve to see if this helps.
