Installing a Road Bicycle Tube Without PINCHING IT!
Спорт
Back to basics with a task we've all failed with at some point in time. Installing tubes is a skill we all need to have as cyclists....yes, even the road tubeless crew have to resort back to tubes when the punctures are large enough. This video covers a few tips and tricks I employ to get a tyre and tube on without hassle every time. Your methods and mileage may vary depending on the tyre/rim combination used.
Tips:
● Use correct size tubes for your tyres.
● Don't try to install a deflated tube into the tyre.
● Check the tube is properly seated before inflating.
● Perform a 'spin test' before riding to check the tyre is properly seated.

Having been a recreational cyclist for many years, I’m surprised that still I’m picking up new tricks. Great content as always from GPlama. Thanks.
You make this look so easy. I am nearly ready to cut my hands off.
Thank you! This worked for me. After pinching a tube on two different installs, I went and googled. It never occurred to me not to use the tire levers/irons as that was what I was always led to believe I needed to use. And yes, they were the culprit in both cases.
Your methodical approach is perfect for these tutorials, nice to have the visual guide to pass along to new riders.
mate thank you so much, I've literally been through 5 inner tubes recently (3 were faulty and they did accept a return even though it's been used), then I did some research on good inner tubes coz I was going for the cheaper one. I also tried rushing a patch job that just destroyed it with pinches in several areas then I found this! Trust me everyone watching, don't buy 4 tubes for 8 quid on amazon, spend like 10-15 on a good one and you won't be let down (pun intended)
Several month ago I spent probably over an hour putting on a 25mm tyres onto a 19mm internal 'tubeless ready' rim. Couldn't feel my hands afterwards, even using tyre levers too.
Made that look easy. Those pink tubes make it a little easier to visually see that it’s seated properly
After pinching a tube doing it my way, I followed your method and succeeded. Thanks!

Excellent! Glad it worked. Enjoy your riding!
A note: Johnsons Baby Powder may be made of cornstarch instead of talc which can lead to the tube eventually sticking to the tire, rim strip or both. Talc is best, but wear a respirator or use outside as it is no bueno for the lungs. I put the talc in a plastic bag with the tube and shake it, then remove. You can get pure talc from aircraft supply houses. Good vid ;-)
Shane, We really appreciate the tutorial. You faked us out as you mounted the wheels on the Cervelo rather than the bike up on the rack there in your garage I am curious for your comments relating to these wheels vs the hookless types like Zipp, etc. No I am not completely ready to run tubeless but it seems the new process technologies for hookless are where the industry will go (of course with the properly designated tires) given the weight reductions achieved and lower manufacturing cost. I look forward to your review, really like the wide internal depth Cheers!
Ugh thank you so much. I had no idea how to do this to my wheelchair but now I do! ❤️
If the the tire is hard or too tight to fit, step on it and pull it up as hard as you can a few times to stretch the tire bit. It does seem to make a slight difference.
once apon a time when i had BMX bikes, i used to talc the inner of the tyre and talc the tube. that way they could nicely slip and move while the inflation was going on. and just a side note Shane, i just fitted a 32mm 5000 TL by hand and pumped it up with the valve core still in , with a floor pump. i was horrified! lol first time the wheel was tubeless and no lube used. i am buying a lotto ticket tomorrow!!
Great video Shane! I was always waiting for someone to use talcum powder on their tyre in a you tube video. My brother told me about that tip years ago. I was getting pinch flats right and left on my bike. I like to put my tube in a zip lock bag with powder and really work it in. I also put some inside the tire and work it in with my finger. It’s a game changer I haven’t had a pinch flat after that. I’m just using a cheap Walmart tube and no problems lol
By doing this in Hoka One One shoes it does qualify as legit Strava workout activity. Thanks for good content :-)
Cheers Shane, nice work 👍🏼
I've never been able to mount a GP5000 that easily! Well done!
It’s 2021. I’m all in with tubes.
Informative as always!👌
Good video! Even people like myself who has installed many many tubes can still pinch tubes from time to time. One thing I've found is that the new generation of tubes, like Tubolitos, have a more plastic like feel and are MUCH easier to install without pinching because the material is slick to the touch, whereas latex and butyl are not.
picked up new pair of latex inner tubes, tyres from 30mm road to 28 and 25mm. I'm getting PR on casual cycling trips 🤯
Thank you soooo much for this, sounds so simple but I personally have never had to change a flat or tyre or tube by myself, lucky I guess!! My kickr snap has completely worn away my back tyre so about to order some new ones and want to be able to fit them by myself (also just ordered a kickr core so I don’t have the same issue again!)
Me: 4 tubes and 4 pinch flats later, miraculously the tires are on my Hunt wheels. Thanks as always Shane
Nice back to basics video. Interested to see a review on the Scribe wheels. Ive just recently heard about them.
Letting a little air of out the tube when seating the tire is a great tip! This will save me some headaches. Thank you!

there was 10 repeats and tires were 10 seconds blasty in the microwave before the shoot
Great guide - it becomes a bit more challenging with lighter tyres though. Veloflex Master e.g. comes board flat out of the box
Wanted to state that I had a different experience...which honestly caught me off guard. I saw you were doing this with latex, and as I use latex tubes in one set of wheels too, had to see how you did it. The last time I replaced tires, I actually found that installing a latex tube completely flat made it less likely to pinch them. I pinched the first tube still partially inflated from the previous tire when re-installing it. And I absolutely install butyls with a few psi in them. I also do the "bead seating" check before inflating the tires. This isn't meant to be contradictory, just more of an observance that my result 'varied.' and tbf, I was installing a set of Michelin tires at the time, which could play a role. I also have a set of GP5000 TLRs (using tubes) that I'm actually afraid to put latex inners in because of how hard they were to squeeze over the rim.
Thanks for the vid, good to pickup some tips. A request, to cover how you installed the valve extenders. I got caught out first time with those (and horrible advice from my LBS)...have to carry plumbers tape in my saddle bag. My saddle bag is like a small bunnings now, just without the sausage sizzle!
Installed tubes on road bike 23mm tyres easy as on multiple situations Tried my 28s same method and failed so badly pinches galore. Learned a new method from my lbs though so will be practising it Edit: oh sick their method was the same as yours GPLama woot
looks easy managed to pinch two inner tubes in a row hopefully after watching this no more!
I have trouble changing bad tubes on the road. I never thought about carrying a full sized floor pump with me! It makes the job so much easier and faster ... 😜
That front tyre is just a bit mis-aligned with the logo Lama :p Thanks for the tips mate!
I recently moved to latex tubes on gp5000 and it is a night and day difference in speed and comfort. I have read that speed is similar to tubeless but is the ride feel the same / better... I am a month away from needing new tyres and still deciding on tubes vs tl.
Your latex tube has a hemorrhoid.
Lining up the label with the valve tube is totally necessary! IT JUST IS!
Nice and simple instructions, very good guide. On the inner tube; are latex tubes worth the extra cost? Can you feel a difference between latex and butyl rubber?

They seem to puncture less for me.. not sure that’s a thing, or just my luck. The data is also pretty conclusive that they’re faster by a few watts too.
Really useful reminder of technique, thanks Shane 👍 do you start opposite the valve side so that you can seat the tyre lower into the centre groove than you would if you started at the valve side and worked away? I need to practice that more!

What is your experience of letting a tyre cure for some weeks before riding it? Had much problems with the GP5000 last year when using it out of the box. Many little pinch holes and cuts that turned into flats since grains would get stuck in them and then work their way through. This year I bought a set early and let them sit on spare wheels for ~6 weeks. Even I originally didn't believe in it I see that they're holding up much better.
Good video .. completely opposite to the idiot Durianrider who put up a video pushing a deflated tube into the tyre and failed about 4 times. He later redid the video ..lol

The dilemma comes when the Tyre Logo, Valve and Wheel Logo are out of balance with each other in which case there is a judgment call whether it is better for the Tyre and Wheel Logo to line up instead of the valve. If both logos stand out more it can look better to sacrifice the Valve alignment.
I've done everything you did in the video. Have used gp5000 on carbon clincher wheels with alloy brakeline for a good 2 months and then one day, on race day, inside the peloton, the tire on the front suddenly exploded! When I checked, the latex tubes looked like it was lacerated. Good thing it didn't happen during descents or sprint. Guess no latex for me on a hot and humid climate and rim brakes.

Good video, as always. What is the rationale for popping on the last bit of tyre near the valve? I would have thought that there was a risk of damaging the valve, especially if you have to resort to using a tyre lever.
@gplama
3 жыл бұрын
In theory.. and in practice (most of the time) it means there’s more tyre to pop over the rim as it doesn’t have the valve on the other side pushing the tyre out of the centre groove when mounting.
I would love to see a similar video but trying a roadside repair of a messy tubeless flat / cut. When I got a bad cut on my tubeless tyre, the cut was so deep it just sprayed the sticky sealant all over the bike and my clothes...

If that happened out on the road, the last thing I’d want to do is setup cameras and film anything. It would be a laugh to watch though 🤣
I really have to try latex tubes, not that the speed really matters in my non-racing, non-KOM type riding, but I'm definitely leaving speed on the table with whatever generic butyl tubes I'm using.

Quick take so far: They were within spec (weights/measurements). Well built. Roll well when setup as road wheels. They're now on a new gravel bike build with 40mm tyres. The freehub is CRAZY loud. I'm going to try quieten it down.
Can't emphasize enough: on tubeless rims, squeezing the tyre into the central channel all the way around on both sides gives you enough slack to fully seat it with your thumbs.
There's something disconcerting about the colour of those partially inflated tubes. Eerily reminiscent of sausage manufacturing footage i've seen.
I’ve always started sitting the tyre on from the valve side, so that the “struggling” part is free from additional elements

can you do this guide for tubless?
Is it normal to not hear any pinging sound while inflating the tyre after installing inner tubes? I just bought a new tyres and tubes and installed it on my wheels and i didn't hear any pinging/popping sound while inflating it. Spin testing it, it seems good and doesn't have any wobbles or wonkiness, i'm just worried that it's not seated properly
Is ‘popping’ of the outer tube essential for a correct seating on the rim? I put a set of GP 5000’s on my carbon rims but didn’t hear the typical pop you mentioned in the video.
@gplama

It depends on the tyre/rim/conditions/etc. Sometimes there's really loud CRACKS.... other times not much at all. As long as it passes the roll test and isn't wobbly, it's all good.
Nice job! Do you find that the GP 5000s wear much quicker than the previous GP 4000 II's ? Around 2000km here and the wear indicators have gone .. where-as for the GP 4000 II's it was closer to double that.

I always pinched my tubes until I started using a tire bead jack/puller. I take my Kool Stop Tire Bead Jack on every ride just in case I get a puncture
What’s the reasoning behind using latex tubes - „just“ weight, or is there more to it? Aren’t they more prone to flat? Thanks!
@Tuslareb
3 жыл бұрын
They have far less rolling resistance and are lighter. Puncture protection is the same or even better compared to (lightweight) butyl tubes. However, they are more sensitive to burst during installation when they are accidentally pinched between the rim and the tire. Also, they lose air faster because latex is more porous. This means pumping your tires before every ride. I love my latex tubes however. It got me off tubeless.
My training tire was a real bitch to get on.

pre-stretch the new tyre with butyl tube~ more safety
The problem with this (and most) instructional videos is you guys are experts & go TOO FAST! Even when you think you're going slow, its still too fast for a novice or someone having problems. For me the major issues are: 1) The tube is always slightly too big for the frame...and the extra slack keep making it fall off. 2) Inserting a tube with the tire still halfway on...doesnt work as the tire is always in the way. The method I've been doing is take both completely off & stuff the tube into the tire. Then put both on together. (Problem with this is 60-75% of the time, there might be a pinch...but I still cant get it on with your method)

Maybe best go to a bike store and have someone walk through the process in person at your required pace.
So, it looks my tubeless setup is simpler and faster then installing latex tubes
There´s a reason why you put the logo by the valve. There´s also a reason why you put the tube in a direction in the tyre. By using the rolling direction and the logo, you know where the tyre is sitting on the rim, you position the tyre. By using the print, which generally is on somewere on the tube, you position the tube in relation to the tyre. You position the print to either roll to the ground before the valve, or after. Now, IF you have a flat, and want to ascertain as much as possible not to have another, you feel inside your tyre two laps, and another two in the opposite direction. Nothing? Fine. Gently inflate your tube, search the puncture. There. Now you KNOW where the puncture in the tube is situated in relation the the tyre. Match them again, logo goes theeere and print goes theeere, and search the tyre throughly at the point the puncture directs you to. Still nothing in the tyre? Do the rest and ride ahead. Mr. Miller, you didn´t mention the importance of the rim shape. Most ( good ) rims are Vshaped on the inside, a fact you use to mount the tyre. When trying to heave the last part of the tyre to the rim, ensure that the tyre already on the rim sits, not in the bead, but INSIDE of the bead, in the groove so to speak. In effect, this reduces the diameter of the rim, leaving you more tyre to push over the rim, and job done. Personally, I´d NEVER push the wheel against the floor. Not necessary when using the proper technique, and a possibility to create your own snakebite flat. Latex tubes are a breeze to patch, BTW. You can use an old latex tube to cut your own patches so they will stretch correctly with the tube when inflated. Rgr

The classic line on the logo alignment is "So you know where the valve is"..... I find it easier to look for the valve than to look for a logo as a reference point to then look for the valve. And yes, wrong terminology in my voiceover bead/inner channel. I'll fire the script writer.
