“Roulette Dares” off this album is probably the best track to review next that will be more up your alley.

deloused in the comatorium needs to be listened to from start to finish. The whole album is good. The guitarist and singer were also in the band at the drive in. The reason this album is so good is because of Jon Theodore and the fact that it was produced by Rick Rubin.

It was Flea! 😂 You have no idea how good this band is yet. They are my #1. Their evolution is quite something as well. Their current iteration is nothing like this. But I love it all. Try Goliath next.

1:36 you actually nailed it. They had Flea on the bass, The Mars Volta's bassist left before the album recording, so Flea filled in upon Rick Rubin's (producer) request. John Frusciante (RHCP) also added some guitar parts

This is a band that needs to be experienced in long form. Most of their earlier albums are roughly concept albums, generally the tracks flow into one another. Before this track, there is an instrumental intro 'tirame a las aranas'. The combination of compositional talent and musical virtuosity of this band is unmatched in all my years of listening to music; even more impressive considering it's mostly the work of one man - Omar Rodriguez-Lopez composed everything except the vocal melodies and lyrics; beyond The Mars Volta he has a staggering back catalogue of solo albums and various other bands and collaborations, easily one of the most prolific musicians of our time and a shame upon humanity that he's not more of a household name.

Inertiatic is my suggestion. It's not my favorite but it's an easy song to get into them through. But their guitar player writes all of their music and the band is very guitar centric. @@Honestreactions9682

As a massive Mars Volta fan it is always a struggle to pick just the right track to introduce someone to this band with. If you pick the wrong song it could turn someone off and they'll never be open to listening to more. That being said, The Mars Volta certainly isn't for everyone's taste. It's not really something you passively listen to or just have playing casually in the background. But, I promise you, if you give them a chance and maybe listen to this album or Frances the Mute all the way through you will see their genius. Glad to see you giving this band a shot, hopefully you give them another chance. I'd recommend "Cygnus, Vismund Cygnus", "Eriatarka", or "Viscera Eyes".

I think I might have been the one suggesting this particular song, awesome reaction! Even if it wasn't love on first listen I like that you both had interesting things to say afterwards and didn't just dismiss it. TMV were a band i had to warm up with first as well! I'm also going to say Roulette Dares is a good suggestion for the next Volta song, as it might be an easier one to get into. They still regulary play it live after all this time (and their reunion) for good reason. The Mars Volta is basically if Led Zeppelin and King Crimson had a baby and it grew up listening to Salsa. They are wild and in my top 3 bands together with Tool. The most grooving and hard hitting song for me though is Viscera Eyes from their third album, if you even want another recommendation after that, haha :-D Might also be worth it to check out their previous band At the Drive-In, which were more like a punk/post hardcore/garage rock kind of band. Their most famous song is called "One-Armed Scissor". They were godly in their own way (especially with the songwriting) but split up before they really became big. Sorry for the rambling, I'll stick around for more ;-)

This album is so different, but so GOOD, partly because it was produced by Rick Rubin. He produced a TON of excellent albums, even if you don't prefer those genres.
