Fun Fact: The Miles Davis comparisons are on point. When this album was recorded, Omar would write parts for the other musicians without giving them context of the songs. They were basically playing self sufficient songs and were overlayed in post.

@BallisticWeenie They were given no context, and were NOT given any, or allowed to listen to any of the other musicians recorded parts.. each musician played and recorded their parts to a metronome, one-on-one with ORL.. Their first time hearing what the songs would later sound like on the album, was over the course of just a small handful of shows, as rehearsals of sorts (that just sounded like improvised jams, as they were just incorporated into songs.. what I mean is they weren’t like “this next one is a song from our upcoming album..” The set lists didn’t have the names of songs from the upcoming album.. for instance on The Mars Volta Live album .. not ScabDates .. the jam in the middle of Drunkship of Lanterns is actually one of the first full band rehearsals of Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus.. when recording of the album was finished, and they could finally hear the album as it was intended (besides the few times they sort of partially debuted them as jams during the performances of songs from DeLoused) they only had about 2-3 weeks of a break from touring, with a few full band rehearsals of the entirety of the album, before they began the touring in support of Frances the Mute.. They also opened up for RHCP during the North American leg of the Stadium Arcadium.. where in many instances John Frusciante and Flea would play with TMV on any songs that they were featured on in the album, and during the intermission break of the RHCP set, when Frusciante would come out to usually play a cover of a song, he would bring out Omar Rodriguez Lopez and instead play songs from his 6 solo albums released in 2006 that featured him.. for ex Anne, or Lever Pulled..

A fun fact that drives me mad! Hard to believe that anyone could play this tight without hearing what the rest of the band was doing! Even the basic rhythm tracks are so elaborate with multiple time changes!!

I have had this tradition since 2010 of listening to this song on any flight I’m on. It’s great it shaves off a good 30 minutes.

I also listen to the Mars Volta on flights! Flying long haul and waking up to the scary ambient stuff from Frances the mute is a unique experience

As someone who has listened to the Mars Volta almost 20 years now, watching someone listening to Cassandra Gemini for the first time and adequately describing the thorough assault on all senses it is, everything about this video fills me with joy. They manage to find an aggressiveness not found in the hardest of metal, complexity that spans across so many genres and styles, musicality and playing of the absolute highest level and yet somehow make it into an ear worm. Hooks that stay with you for years, accents that you only discover after the 50th time listening, too much to unpack for one brain. If you ever find the time, the entire Frances the mute album is a masterpiece, well worth the time and then some. I saw the opening show of the european Frances the Mute tour back in 2005, still without a doubt the most impressive concert I've ever experienced, they somehow managed to be even more impressive live.

Tarantism is just unreal. That drop into it and the shredding, still gets me, all these years later (8:03)

I saw them live just after this album came out. Yes, they did perform the whole thing, and yes, straight through with no breaks. Absolutely brilliant.

Saw them do the same with The Bedlam in Goliath at Voodoo Fest. Not a word, stepped on stage and jammed til the end of the album.

The Mars Volta is a band that are definitely an acquired taste. It’s such an assault on the cerebral cortex. When I first discovered them it took some time to digest and appreciate how phenomenal they truly are.

I consider myself profoundly lucky to grow up with this band. I remember clearly church camp summer 2005, top bunk, Frances the Mute in the CD player, blowing my 16 year old mind.

Well put, that’s pretty much my experience. At first I couldn’t break through their wall of sound and it sounded like garbage to me, later on it finally clicked and it felt like a new dimension opened in my ears. I’ve never heard another band like them, truly amazing

No different from any other prog band I'd argue. I think especially already listening to King Crimson helped me understand these folks quick.

The crazy part is this is a basic song structure. Intro, verse, chorus, verse chorus, bridge, chorus, outro. It's just the bridge is like 8 different parts and is 20 something minutes long.

I think it's hilarious that you needed to take a 5 hour break. The song is insane. Great react.

I had the privilege of experiencing the mars volta live 5 times. I saw them at the Greek in LA on the Frances tour. My buddy and I had the worst fuckin seats, but 30 mins before the show, he mentioned that his aunt knew the sound engineer at the Greek and he could upgrade our seats. We went to the sound area or whatever the hell its called we asked for him. Will never forget his name, Greg Nelson . Dude ended up hooking us up with pit tickets and I saw Cassandra Gemini in its entirety, and I was 15 feet away from the band.

I feel like people are too impatient with volta, so it's good to see stuff like this getting around now Also around 18 mins when you say it's the track that keeps giving... that guitar melody actually sounds a lot like a bit from the jam rodriguez lopez did with flea and john frusciante back in the day. Just 2 guitars and a bass, it's on youtube somewhere, you would enjoy it

I love Volta. I don't get impatient. Sometimes I find them grating on my ears though to be honest. They've done some really great stuff though but sometimes to me there are parts that are unnecessary. I guess it depends on my mood

The first time I heard this song was on an afterglow comedown of an intense acid trip...needless to say I fell in love with this piece of music and listened to it in the car for a week straight.

You're very brave for taking on this one. It's quite a lot to take in and to digest on a first listen. What a band, though, incredible.

“There’s no light, in the darkness of your inner regions”! Such an awesome lyric! Like most of their songs!

I’ve noticed that after each listen things in the real world sound more crisp and delicate for a few hours. This track is like doing stretches for your ears and brain.

I had to chew on this album for months before I could swallow. Its even harder to digest lol. It's probably one of my favorite albums of all time. Just because they won me over after me resisting and resisting from fully embracing this album. Man, i give you props for not quitting out half way! Cheers!✌️

I wish I could have the experience of hearing this album for the first time again. Even after my 10,000th listen it still doens't get old.

Listening to this is literally like taking an acid trip, with no drugs in your system! It’s like the creation of a mad genius, with an entire band pulling it off!

Incredibly brave for you to tackle this monster, and that's exactly what it is. One of the greatest musical moments ever created, hands down. Loved watching you hear this for the first time, it melted my brain back in 2005 😜

Jim, I think I speak for everyone when say you NEED to listen to their song Tetragrammaton! It’s almost 17 minutes of some of the most mind blowing music you’ll ever hear

One of my favorite tracks by TMV. I love driving around blasting this shit. The only track I could say I like more is The song Frances The Mute, which wasn't even on the album because a lack of disc space and they had to release it on an EP prior to the album's release. The only band I know of who released a title track for an album that wasn't on that album, lol.

Thank you so much for doing this one Jim, I really appreciate it and it is one of my “Jim bucket list” tunes. The first half is just an aural assault that is so intense and seems to escalate section by section. I don’t think my heart could take it if the entire 32 minutes was at that same intensity. It is just a very exciting piece. One of the first times I really listened to it, I was sitting in my car one lunchtime and I was just transfixed by those opening 16 minutes or so. It was a game changer for me and made a lot of other music seem dull.

He finally did it!! I've seen them play this live. What an experience.

If you can imagine, my first exposure to this song was live. They had the balls to open with this song and I swear it felt like it was 2 hrs. I'm pretty sure they only played 5-7 songs as it was. They played Cygnus and Widow for sure. It was insanity. I knew Deloused in the comatorium, i can't remember if Francis was even out yet. Edit: well fuck I was wrong! This album or pretty much TMV as a whole were a sound that took a lot of people time to wrap thier heads around what they were listening to. At first listen, I couldn't make it through the first track and had to turn it off. I never really liked but a couple of songs of theirs but, as with all things.. time and repetition became the road map for an appreciation for music I had never had before. Deloused & Frances The Mute are what I would consider albums that quite literally changed my life. There's no going back after truly taking these albums in. One of the most misunderstood, under appreciated, and pioneering groupings of talent the likes of which I may not see again in my life time. The Mars Volta, if you don't get it the first time around Sisyphus; you know what you need to do.

Wonderful. Dig deeper on TMV mate. Almost, definitely not torture. Genius. It gets better when you listen a few times through and can find more nuances, additional depth and incredible musicianship. The acoustic ending mimics the start of the album. Really should give the first half a full listen as well. Love your channel, Jim.

So glad you listened to this song. I had gotten some of The Mars Volta stuff way before I discovered your channel but you really made me appreciate them in ways I didn't know how to before. Because of that I picked up a couple more albums back in the spring and Frances the Mute being one of them. When I got to Cassandra Gemini I knew this had to be a song for one of your videos. I listened to this album a lot for the first several weeks just so I could digest it all and make sense of it and this song just got better and better with each listen.

Being that, I guess I could say, I’ve waited over a year for this video I wanted to give it our due respect and wait until we could both sit down and really enjoy it. Couldn’t have expected anything more from it. Jim, they sure are fun aren’t they? Love how you get through your description articulating the way we all feel after hearing these gems for the first time. Well done. There are no limits to the number of times one can explore and enjoy this prog opus. I’ve maybe listened to this track (nah, too many to guess) ___ times and I felt like I heard a overdubbed Cedric run I’ve never heard before. Truly they are one of a kind. The payoff when the chorus from the first section comes back in at the end is just incredible - but it only hits if you listen to the whole thing. Can't just skip to the last 5 minutes. The satisfaction is gone having not made it through the entire 30+ minutes.

This is my favorite compilation of music by TMV. I get the itch all the time and have to listen to the entire album uninterrupted. That being said, it certainly puts one in a daze but the anticipation for what is coming next is almost addictive... You hear it in other music sometimes but this really satisfies that crave for a sonic journey where you get to have your cake and eat it too.

I’ve listened to this many times back when it came out. I got lost in it spectacularly. Masterpiece

Thanks for sharing Jim! I've been watching your videos for a good while now, and I enjoy your solo work as well as your reaction videos. TMV is a tough nut to crack and I'm always on the lookout for a favorite new track as my exposure to them has been limited up until recently. If you haven't yet heard it already, Cicatriz ESP is an absolutely banging track. Accessible and catchy are not terms i would normally attach to a TMV song, but this song has both qualities and then some. Timely and topical lyrics, it has that too. "beyond the anthills of the dawning of this plague" oh yeah, and did i mention the Santana style breakdown? Fucking smoking. I would be very curious to see your reaction to it, as would a great many of your followers in my opinion. Thanks again for the reaction, please check out Cicatriz ESP, you will be blown away. Couldn't agree more, one of the best "pieces" of music ever written. A modern day symphony if you ask me lol It's definitely a lot to take in for the first time but going back will make you appreciate it even more because you'll discover so many parts you didn't even notice the first time!

Late to the party. I used to crank the volume on my zune....lmao, back on deployment and ride the bus on my day off in Baghdad every 3rd week. Some days I'd miss my stops on purpose and just jam this song straight through..sneaking glances through the drawn blinds at the war destroyed city. That's a memory, dunno good or bad but it's one I'll carry till my grave

Day of the Baphomets, Meccamputechture and Tetragrammaton are the fucking holy trinity. Also maybe check out Godspeed You! Black Emperor if you have the patience and the track Rosa Rugosa by Anywhere which I’m pretty sure Cedric did the drums for. (Anywhere’s lineup is rarely the same from track to track)

Melechesh - Multiple truths next pls ! Its a rare hidden gem that sets a high standard for the very band that created it. It's a very tasty and fascinating mix between beautifull melodic lines and mystic a thmosphere and sick heavy riffage. The thematic and lyrics are at least as fascinating and they quite well balance the message with the instrumentation. There are definitely black and death metal influences but that's doesn't really tells you a lot about their sound. Can't wait to see you reaction !

You should check out The Mars Volta live album, Scabdates. Even if you don’t react to it it’s a great listen. Is was put together the same way as Cassandra and most of the longer TMV songs by combining recorded sections and piecing them together to form one longer piece. Scabdates does this with bits and pieces of songs from their 2004 & 2005 tours. It’s also chaotic and a bit tedious to listen to in places, but it’s a beautiful piece of work.
