Omar (guitarist, composer) had each band member play their own parts to the tick of a metronome and then he'd mix everything together and then send the instrumentals to Cedric (Singer) to write lyrics to. Most of the band had no idea how the songs were gonna sound until the album was mixed and ready to go.
Could you imagine this live in Puerto or Havana ... omg. Horn line and all of it!
This song SLAPS!
If you like this track, maybe you might enjoy some other songs from Amputechture, Day of the Baphomets may be a great pick for you.
One of my favorites
First time hearing this as well. Very fun stuff. Thanks for revisiting TMV. 😎
In my opinion, there’s The Mars Volta and then there’s just everyone else. They’re on a whole different cloud man. If you’re just finding them, please look at the rest of their library. I encourage everyone to get their brains melted by Volta. Cassandra Gemini is easily the best song ever written.
Do more Amputechture! Definitely an overlooked album, but it has some incredible riffs in all of the main, epically long songs - Tetragrammaton, Meccamputechture, Day of the Baphomets. And yeah, Cedric's voice doesn't bother me but I can see how it might others, and Amputechture is not going to give you much relief from it. Still, I think you'll like the music enough you won't care. Great reaction!
Fantastic song!
I'm not sold on their new direction but love everything previous
Day of baphomets! I would suggest Cassandra, but its 32 min might be too much to process. Just discovered your channel, like your style. Im drinking corona btw😂 cheers!
John Frusciante of RHCP and Omar Rodriguez are "dueling" during the solos
Love the volta
Great song!
I have Amputechture. It's named for the song Meccamputechture, an architectural removal of our spiritual organ or something
For your next dive into TMV you should go for the epic Cassandra Gemini (its split into sections on the album but is meant to be listened to as a full 32 minute track) off the Frances the Mute album
Ahhh yeah.
Cedric has a lot of range, I’d recommend the song “Goliath” to hear some more of his lower register. He does use his lower register quite often throughout the albums.
One of my all time favorite bands. Saw them twice when I still lived at home in the UK. First time they played the whole of Cassandra Gemini live. Was like 14 when the first album came out, was like nothing i had heard. Been a massive fan since although very dissapointed in their latest offering....
Another song like Viscera Eyes.... hmmm, that is a tough ask, it's fairly unique even when compared to other TMV tracks. But I can do my best! "Goliath" has a similar structure to Viscera Eyes, one movement in the middle, the beginning being a typical TMV song, and then the second half being a bassline driven free for all. I don't recommend this one at the moment because it is absolute chaos. "Soothsayer" is a fairly good pick, Cedric sings in a lower register most of the song, and the vibe of the whole song has the same vibe as the low register section of this song. "Malkin Jewel" has a lot of singing, but the live version is about ten minutes longer with a groovy jam section at the end. "Graveyard Love" is a new song, but its not prog, its just Cedric & Omar being a quality songwriting duo. "Teflon" might be right up your alley, its a shorter track though that seems like something is missing. "Cassandra Geminni" 32 minutes of brilliance because I dare you to do it. ;)
Been listening to this since it came out, and even now I feel like I struggle to hold onto something when I hear it
