Joe is a fantastic songwriter. I would highly recommend his debut album Look Sharp! as a full album listen. He was a sophisticated musician who tapped into punk sensibility, like Elvis Costello or The Police. A couple of the interesting approaches that factor into its unique style is that he wanted a rock band without guitar solos but featuring the bass as the primary driver. It has an aspect of The Who in that regard. Plus he’s a great piano player and keyboardist, but a lot of his early albums have very little of those instruments as the feature.

My interpretation of the song when I first heard this was a deliberate attempt to switch typical gender roles to make the listener think about how entrenched, and how valid (or not) those roles are. The repeated line 'You're all the same,' is a frequent complaint made by women to men, and obviously untrue. The lyrics were intended to make the listener think, and question what was actually being said, which I felt was a clever way to raise the issue.

He's got a couple bangers from that post punk era. However, the album Night and Day is much more polished. I recommend "A Slow Song" and "Steppin Out" from that album. I think you'd enjoy them. Joe Jackson is one of my all-time favorite artists. He started out in the "angry young man" punk/new wave style, and he is very, very good in that style, but within a few years, he branched out into jazzier music, and pop as well, and then, later, he even composed orchestral classical music! I don't use the term "genius" for many artists, but Joe is a genius in my book. He can compose and perform in any style and do it well.

Born in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, England,[5] David Jackson spent his first year in nearby Swadlincote, Derbyshire. He grew up in the Paulsgrove area of Portsmouth, where he attended the Portsmouth Technical High School. Jackson's parents moved to nearby Gosport when he was a teenager. He learned to play the violin but soon switched to piano, and prevailed on his father to install one in the hall of their Paulsgrove council house. Jackson began playing piano in bars at the age of 16, and also won a scholarship to study musical composition at London's Royal Academy of Music.

"Don't you know that it's different for boys" is an expression men used to say to women as an excuse to push for sex when the women wasn't ready yet, that somehow, it was harder for a man than for a woman to control sexual urges, a misogynistic attitude that Jackson explores by flipping the gender roles. "You're all the same" is what women said of men seeking sex without commitment, so Jackson flips that line to the man in the song speaking of women. I love Joe Jackson, but other than the one story-telling twist, this one ranks way down the list for me musically and lyrically. Joe Jackson's talent and versatility far exceeds his notoriety as someone who wrote and produced great albums, each one different. His first two albums, Look Sharp and I'm the Man, were New Wave meets punk, mostly high energy songs. His third was tinged with reggae. his fourth album, Jumpin' Jive was his loving tribute to a jump blues band leader Louis Jordan, then came the album Night and Day - which was heavily influenced by jazz and Latin music with lyrics that drew comparisons to Cole Porter; he released a similar album at the same time that was the soundtrack for a Hollywood movie, Mike's Murder, and then what may have been my personal favorite, Body and Soul, which amped up the cool and hot jazz influences. Here's some suggested tracks: * You Can't get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want) (Body and Soul) * Steppin' Out (Night and Day) * Not Here, Not Now (Body and Soul) * Breaking Us in Two (Night and Day) * Be My Number Two (Body and Soul) * Jumpin' With Symphony Sid (From Jumpin' Jive -- fun and danceable) * Look Sharp (debut album, first big hit) * Another World (Night and Day)) * Is You Is or Is You Ain't my Baby (Louis Jordan tribute album)

@@ma_de_sa5848 Joe Jackson explained his intent in writing the song in 2012, and his intent was EXACTLY what I said, though I didn't read the interview until after you challenged my point. Here's what Joe Jackson said, "It was something that I heard somewhere that struck me as a cliché. The sort of thing that someone might say. And again, I thought, What could that be about? And that maybe the idea was to turn it on its head and have a conversation between a man and a woman and what you'd expect to be the typical roles are reversed. So that was the idea of that." - Joe Jackson, Songfacts, 2012 www.songfacts.com/blog/interviews/joe-jackson

I used to wonder about this song, when he sings "she says I don't believe it.....etc" when does it stop being what she said and when does it go back to him? Most importantly, I wondered, was it him or her saying "You're all the same"? On one of his tours in the 90s he did a version of this song as a duet with a women singer who would sing the "She says" part. I remember being at the show thinking I would finally get my answer to who is saying "You're all the same." And the answer was....they both sang it. Not sure if that is definitive but it was interesting to me at least (and probable only me. lol) I looked around and did find a video with a version of the song similar to what I am talking about - kzread.info/dash/bejne/o5OimJSjZLDbes4.html. ---Although I remember it slightly different than this, I thought it was the whole band not just him on the piano. So either this is a different version or I remember incorrectly, but in this one they also both sing "You're all the same"

If you do reactions + lyric meanings, Joe can be really great or awful as he worries too much about being misunderstood. As a result, his lyrics can be too direct. kzread.info/dash/bejne/gpl-r9d-e6mZp8Y.html for instance is VERY direct - but a phenomenal song. This one here was an attempt at role reversal & putting some of the more aggressive men who go on dates in their place a bit. Unusual for a man, eh? It's like a date going wrong for a guy who is utterly oblivious as to what the woman he's on a date with wants. See how messed it sounds with the _woman_ saying it? Trying To Cry, The Man in the Street & Just Because would all be interesting, all different sounds, bands &... all very different from each other. Joe liked switching his sound up. A lot.

My spin (no pun intended) is: He is wondering why his girlfriend is feeling down. Because girls have a different view and expectations of love, it's different for girls, so he just thinks it typical all girls being the same that way. I was 16 when this song came out... trying to figure out what is spinning it their heads while trying to keep my "head" straight [wink]. I am married now, and still none the wiser [laugh]. Women... they are all the same, but each one is different. It could go the other way too.. it's kind of a yin and yang where it's a duality either way.

Yeah stereotypes suck, and the generalisations that all men want is sex is incredibly sexist and damaging. I think Joe does a great job breaking down stereotypes, allowing people to be viewed as individuals. The idea men can only be victims in a role reversal world is why male victims don't speak out about very important issues such as domestic abuse, rape and sexual assault. People are individuals and we should treat them as such, not make assumptions based on how they look.
