Every time I listen to Joni Mitchell, I'm blown away. She is a true artist, in every sense of the word. So glad she's still around.
Beautiful melodic song. The river is like a means of escape. Hasn't anyone wanted something to sweep them away? Lovely composed.
I've heard this number a hundred times. Why do I still get choked up every time I hear it? Wonderful to experience your reaction to this great song.
Joni is what happens when poetry meets musical genius.
Merry Christmas to a young man I respect and admire immensely. Thank you for this.
"Joni Mitchell Archives Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963-1967) has been nominated for the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Historical Album. It is the 17th Grammy nomination Mitchell has received since her first in 1969. To date, she has won nine Grammy Awards. That could change on Monday, January 31 when the 64th Annual Grammy Awards show will be broadcast live on CBS."
A frozen river is always still flowing, and teeming with life. This only adds to the allegorical mastery of Joni Mitchell. So many directions to navigate. Merry Christmas, Legion.
Joni Mitchell Releases First Ever Music Video for Her Classic “River” for this Christmas..... it's on yt
Hey! It’s good to see that you’ve arrived at the place where we all get to after listening to Joni Mitchell song “Blue”. A place of complete and utter dumbfounded ness that anybody could be that good at taking you to an emotional place that you’ve never been and you don’t even know why! That’s the magic of Joni’s music.
Hi Daniel 👋 thank you for playing my idol Joni Mitchell 💕💕🎸🎸🎹🎹🎹
This song perfectly matches our Christmas this year. Not a break up thing but eventually, if you live long enough, there will be a loss or sadness associated with almost every holiday. Sad but true, that's life. Hope you have a Merry Christmas, enjoy every one you can. 🌲
Hi, Daniel. Well, I've watched and listened from the beginning. If you remember me I discovered your channel while in hospital. I've been in failing health for three years now. Instead of going back in hospital I've decided to skate away across the river on my own terms. Thank you for giving me the pleasure of witnessing you discover wonderful music. Happy Christmas and goodbye.

Yes !!! Thank you !!! Merry Christmas to you and yours as well. This song is about as melancholy as melancholy gets, but if you've ever lost someone you love deeply and know you can't undo what's been done, well. I love the juxtaposition of a subdued "Jingle Bells" intro/outro over the remorse she's expressing - Jingle Bells being perhaps the most raucous and lively Christmas Carroll in the lot of them. She's a poet; whether in song or on canvas, she frames her message for your understanding. I hope you'll explore her FOR THE ROSES album. COLD BLUE STEEL AND SWEET FIRE, LESSON IN SURVIVAL, LET THE WIND CARRY ME, FOR THE ROSES, SEE YOU SOMETIME, JUDGEMENT OF THE MOON AND STARS (for Beethoven) all are special for me. Thank you, Daniel. And thank you, Joni.
"Mitchell penned the tune after her breakup with fellow singer/songwriter Graham Nash, who told the Guardian earlier this year that, "River' made me sad, because it chronicled the end of our relationship, but also elated, because it was such a beautiful song and she had the courage to bare her soul. We were very much in love. I treasured that relationship."

@Sevenoaks Kent it was so poignant to recently hear Graham Nash sing [to her] A Case Of You at the 2023 Library of Congress Gershwin Award which Joni was awarded for pop music. I highly suggest trying to see that 1.5 hour show. It was amazing. Also featured Brandi Carlile, Annie Lennox, James Taylor, Cyndi Lauper and many others. Joni performed Gershwin’s Summertime and then the show concluded with Circle Game sung by Joni and the entire group of performers. 🙌🏻
Joni just released official video for this. She was artist first who was told by art teacher if can create paintings she can paint music. She did.
Merry Christmas, Daniel. I woke up last night and just had to grab my phone to play this song, it was in my head for some reason. I love this song and the piano is giving off such a lonely feeling it actually makes me feel like I am next to an iced over river. Joni is so expressive in her instrumentation, vocals and lyrics. Thank you for reacting to this beautiful song. This whole album is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Thank you Daniel. Merry Christmas today and Happy Holidays on and on…..this is the seasonal reaction selection I’ve been waiting for. It gets not better.
If you have lived and loved and lost it all, this is one of the great songs. One of the great songwriters .
River is my favorite Christmas song. Of course that speaks volumes about how much I dislike Christmas.
One of my favorite Joni's songs..evokes that sense of floating away from pain. I'm watching this as I pet sit for a dog right on the Kalamazoo River in SW Michigan about a mile from the Lake Michigan channel.. We had 50° temperatures for Christmas, last night "thunder snow," a somewhat uncommon event here at times when it's been warm and cold fronts come through. It's a wet slushy snow, but finally some white on the ground. It's so fitting. Merry 3 French Hens Day! Hope your Christmas was all you desired. Thanks for your depth of understanding...more Joni, anytime.
Was really looking forward to you reacting to this song. There is such heartbreak in this song. While Christmas is a time for great joy for a lot of families, it also can be a sad and depressing time for many who are alone and experience loneliness. Joni beautifully captures that latter feeling in this song. Thanks for doing this, Daniel. Hope you and your family had a joyous Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you and your family Daniel. I loved this song as a Christmas song when I was your age. Such an honest song for many of us who had reason to be sad at Christmas. How she works in Jingle Bells on piano at the end is just genius. Court and Spark and Hejira are among my favorite albums but Blue was the first one I bought.
One of her very best and most important tunes in folk rock history!
Daniel, you are AWESOME to watch! I love your deep dives into the artists and the lyrics. You’re so thoughtful and well spoken, and I really appreciate that. Found you through Pentatonix reactions, but now I’m binging everything I can! Thank you so much! 💜
Merry Christmas Daniel , tthe melancholy side the holidays as they give us all a time to reflect on ourselves and others. joni paints song so sweetly
Merry Christmas to you Daniel. Great choice. An all time favourite artist. (She's huge to me. So happy you have listened in.) Thanks for all you share and bring to us. My best as ever.
What a talented lady. Not only is she a great musician/songwriter, but she is very good painter as well. Her vocals, music and lyrics are all extraordinary. What I like most about her music is the honesty.
Hey Daniel-Glad you're appreciatin' these incredible Joni Mitchell songs. On Dec 23 she released the 1st official video for the song River 'n it is beautifully done. I wanna recommend 2 other albums by her for your listenin' pleasure: Ladies Of The Canyon 'n For The Roses. You will be moved by their awesomeness, guaranteed!
Joni is from Canada where there's a tradition of skating on the frozen rivers. She's now in LA where there aren't any, and feeling cut off from her roots along with everything else. Oh, and this season is never complete without this and Greg Lake. Thank you for reminding us you did it last year, headed there now.
Joni just had a watercolor animation put out to this and it's gorgeous.
Merry Christmas to you Daniel. Great choice. An all time favourite artist. (She's huge to me. So happy you have listened in.) Thanks for all you hare and bring to us. My best as ever.
Hey Dan, this has been my go to Christmas song for a while now. It sums up how I feel this time of year. the other day I encountered Tim Minchin’s “White Wine in the Sun,” which floored me. It’s Tim’s take on what Christmas means to him, and while Tim gotta Tim and enumerate his problems with Christmas, he does a very sincere non-snarky piece that I think you’ll find moving. 👍

Yes, I wholeheartedly agree about Tim Minchin’s White Wine in the Sun. I had just listened to it last night. It’s a great song about the real meaning of Christmas.River by Joni Mitchell is one of my absolute favorite Christmas songs. I also wholeheartedly recommend the cover version done by Sarah McLachlan. 💙
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Join Mitchell is always a great choice
Hi Daniel, Merry Christmas to you and your family!
An excellent choice. Seasonal, but thoughtful. Joni melancholy is always welcome at any season. Pure. Joy. Peace.
If you like Joni, and female folk singers, you can't beat Sandy Denny.

Hey Daniel - I'm so glad that you get and appreciate Joni. Another (and completely different) one that you should review and add to your list is "Father Christmas" by The Kinks. I think you'll like it and add it to your rock and roll holiday playlist.
My favorite Joni song and the other Looking at Both Sides brings me to tears
Merry Christmas to You, Daniel! Thank you for your reactions and many Blessings to You!!!
Merry Christmas 🎉
I'm elated to hear that you are going to do the whole album! Carry on!
According to Joni herself, this is a song about the end of a relationship and the loneliness that some people feel during the Christmas holiday. BEAUTIFUL, MAGICAL…..there’s only ONE JONI. ❤️💚❤️💚❤️💚
Merry Christmas Daniel. Hope you're doing good in school. Wish you and your family have a Merry Christmas ⛄🎄 and stay well. Thank you.
Merry Christmas Daniel to you and your family!
Yes.
Joni Mitchell was asked if she meant it to be a Christmas song. She asked "why shouldn't there be a Xmas song for people who are sad"?
Hey Daniel great reaction. Love River its a song that, even though it's sad, you can hug it close it it won't hurt. Have a happy New Year and play some U2....if you want.
She's such an awesome writer and singer! Her biggest hit was 'Help Me'.
Daniel, Thank You for your opinions on Excellent music and actually listening to the lyrics and providing constructive feedback
I'm envious of & thoroughly appreciate those who can pour out their hearts and bare their souls in lyrics and music like this. Wow - simple but powerful. Beautiful & true voice. I would think sometimes musicians must have a hard time "letting go" of a creation such as this since it is so personal; however, what a gift to the rest of us to be able to share that experience and relate strongly. I'm so grateful to hear my own feelings expressed in this beautifully artistic manner. Thanks for the reaction, Daniel; I always enjoy your perspective. Happy New Year.
Hard to listen to without crying, but here we go again. Had all her albums...
Wow another song from blue excellent can’t wait for this one love you
Merry Christmas Daniel!
Merry Christmas, Daniel! 🎅☃️🎁🎄🌨️🛷🔔❄️🎀🦌🥁
I rate this remarkable song as one of Joni's finest, and that's saying something! So so beautiful, so powerful and so emotional, it cuts right into your heart and is delivered with a perfect marriage of music, voice and lyrics. This song paints such an amazing and striking portrait, and it only goes to re-iterate what a loss to music she was when she decided to retire from music and move into the world of art. A genius of her musical genre, undoubtedly.
More Joni is always a good idea.
This very day, a new video of this song has been released. It's on You Tube and well worth checking out.
Great song by one of the greatest of all time. I don't know if you have listened to any of the song off Court and Spark but if you haven't you might do a couple while this is still fresh in your mind. "Help Me" and "Free Man in Paris" are the first that come to mind. My favourite Joni album is Hissing of Summer Lawns.
Not only is Joni Mitchell a great songwriter and a great singer but she also plays great piano and great guitar. My favorite albums of hers are Ladies of the Canyon and Song to a Seagull. Both albums have great songs one after another
Love Joni's voice, a modern cover of river by Ellie Goulding is well worth a listen to, her voice is a mixture of Joni and Melanie, Melanie is one of the best female singer/songwriters ever in my book, listen to her "Look What They've Done To My Song Ma"

@@TheDivayenta I have just watched a clip of it, knew her voice would fit it well. For a male version have you heard Harry Styles on Zoe Ball Radio show? He sang it live, really good.
Love.
It's boxing day so I hope you had a Merry Christmas
If you’re doing a whole Joni Mitchell album, and just picking 1, you should do Court and Spark instead of Blue. Or at least do Court and Spark as well. Those are her two most acclaimed albums. And they sound somewhat different. Court and Spark is more upbeat and jazz/pop elements. Blue has good songs, but it’s much more acoustic and sparse, and a lot of melancholy songs.

All true but Hejira, while perhaps less accessible, is, in my opinion, her finest achievement. Amelia in particular, is a masterpiece.

He's already reacted to two from blue, and I'd expect he'll continue.
Hejira is the big one for me - but Blue might be the best point of entry, especially considering Daniel's reaction to the title track. Not all the songs are sad or just melancholy: All I Want, My Old Man, Carey, California, This Flight Tonight all have their sunny moments. And for someone who likes to analyze lyrics as well as music, Daniel will get Joni's basics: guitar-dulcimer/piano, and if he decides to dig deeper, he'll figure out if he's in the camp that never got over her moving away from folk-pop-rock, or if he'll follow her in less immediately accessible terrain. That's the problem with "reacting": at least for me, i had to live with many of her albums to start getting them. Blue hits you like a ton of brick, Big Yellow Taxi or Raised on Robbery don't take much to get into. When and if he hits The Jungle Line or Don't Interrupt The Sorrow, it might be a different ballgame...
For something "unplugged" (violin, piano, drums, typewriter, baritone) of a darker, more melancholy nature (the kind of sadness that makes you happy) you might enjoy contemporary Norwegian band, *Major Parkinson* in a different, but melodic way in their *A Night at the Library* - a COVID concert from the Bergen Public Library. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aIR9spVvkcbgnMo.html It's no competition for Joni (but then this isn't a competition, so that's a retarded thing for me to say, anyway), it's just something they've made available very recently that I have an idea you might like from what I've seen of your reactions, that's all. Amazing what a huge sound comes out of just Joni and a piano, isn't it? As full as any five piece band. It doesn't have the sparse version of the "unplugged" sound. Sounds complete. Adding anything would ruin it.
Try some of Joni’s tunes from her most popular album, Court and Spark of which these couple of songs are amazing, Free Man In Paris , and the title tune!
Really enjoyed this reaction Daniel, thanks. Yes, Joni's music is incredible! Another great seasonal song is "A Winter's Tale" written by Freddie Mercury & Queen, and one of the last songs he wrote & performed. It has remarkable lightness and hope considering what he was facing at the time. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dZ6Ls7x7na3MZrA.html Looking forward to your reaction to the full "Blue" album...it's curious to see a sensitive someone like yourself, who is around the age I was when I first heard this music hearing it for the first time. It was an amazing time for music! Thanks!
You were very quiet but your face said it all . Been playing this album for a long time fits every mood. I hope you have made Blue part of your collection. It's not what it originally means it's what it makes you feel.
I hope you got to see the Kennedy CenterHonors tribute to her last week in CBS. Brandi Carlile sang this one to Joni.
❤️❤️❤️
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You and Yours! Mr. Daniel. Maybe you'll find Cantique de Noel sung in Swedish by Marianne Mellnas or The Ventures' Christmas Album underneath the tree somewhere! Thanks! :)
You remind me a lot of my own son, although he's a little older than you. I've spent hours listening to "old" music with him. He knows my favorites. He's in his his 30's know and we don't get together quite as much as we used to we still get together at times to listen to music. Joni just take us away to other places where she's been..., But we've always been to.
Daniel if you love Joni Mitchell PLEASE check out Laura Nyro. She has a different style but a great poetic lyricist, interesting complicated melodies, and a beautiful voice. They were contemporaries and Joni respected Laura's talent. Elton John idolized Laura and she influenced Many songwriters but she never got the credit and kudos she deserved. There are so many possible song choices but a few recommendations are: Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp, Buy and Sell. Poverty Train. You Dont Love Me When I Cry. The Man Who Sends Me Home. Emmie. Captain for Dark Mornings. New York Tendaberry. December''s Boudoir.......Also a cover of The Bells. There are So Many! She is Very intense and passionate!
It's a gorgeous album, every song. My particular favorite is 'This Flight Tonight' which inexplicably was a hit for Nazareth. I think the song is mystical because I've been in that state of mind where "I shouldn't be here." Give it a listen PLEASE, you won't regret it I promise you.
This song (the whole album, really) is about the baby she had and had to give away. They were reunited decades later...
For a different listen on Joni, try one of her live versions from the MILES OF AISLES album. The sound is excellent, and the performances are a little more upbeat and looser. It covers most of her first 3 or 4 albums. CAREY is highly recommended.
Not to be missed is Barry Manilow's arrangement (arranging...his best talent, IMO); there's a live version that's around that's pretty stirring, and of course, from a man's perspective.
This is the song of a young free woman who loves a man but knows that there is no future together. She sums up the guilt and sorrow in ending the relationship whilst still knowing that it is necessary for her own soul.
Firsties!!! Hey have you been able to start reading the Ted Dekker books yet?
Anything from "Blue" is superb....but also try "Urge for Going" for beauty and poetry....
Joni is talking about her daughter she gave to adoption. Look at references to baby (cry, say good bye, best baby)
Graham Nash from C,S,N, & Y, wrote “Our House” about the house in Laurel Canyon he shared with then girlfriend Joni Mitchell. They were a couple. ❤ Daniel, have you heard of “Our House” ?
@rk41gator

It is a very, very fine song.
You should check out Tori Amos, she plays piano and harpsichord. 👍
I think if you did the " For the Roses" album, "Blue", "Court and Spark" and " Hejira", you would have an idea of her music.
@foxandscout
2 жыл бұрын
And Ladies of the Canyon. I think I wore out For the Roses the most. Probably my favorite album; but each time I look at the tracks of the first 7 or 8 albums...I can’t choose. Yet, You Dream Flat Tires is one of my favorite songs and it’s on Wild Things Run Free. That, and Coyote, which seems to be high on every fan’s list, esp her live version on the film The Last Waltz, of The Band’s farewell performance. She’s a genius.
Try her "Help Me."
I'm interested in how you can only listen to one (now 2) from an album? Seems you'd be inspired to hear it all the way through.
:)
Part of her sadness might have been because when she was much younger she gave up her baby for adoption as she just was not capable of taking care of a child back then.
Of course a Very noteworthy cover of this song is beautifully rendered by another Canadian musician that is : Sarah Mclachlan. - Check it Out ✌
Daniel your volume for you voice is very low. P.S. Joni Mitchell singing CASE OF YOU!!
Her voice…
So sad 😢
Never liked this song, although I understand why many do. I prefer her musically sophisticated recordings more than the songs with hyper-emotional lyrics - although A Case of You on this album is a great one.
Merry Christmas Daniel!
