I look forward to part 2 - anything that can prolong the life of such products is a great move - and will hopefully be of benefit to others in the future.

@@TheDigitalOrphanage I messed around with the cable and I was also thinking about wiring the cable the normal way. I have sliced the connector and everything is in some kind of resin, so it won't be easy. I bought a Rift S with a broken cable from eBay, thinking I could fix it, but that didn't work. So I have contacted Oculus and they replaced the cable for free :D

how soon will the second part be out? I'm also wondering if you have a complete cable pinout? As far as I know, there were options with all-copper wires from RIFT S.

Hi there! I got an oculus rift S yesterday at a thrift store. My cable still works fine but I saw the cable was proprietary, so I started digging into this in anticipation of the issues. I am wondering: maybe a simpler fix would be to remove/replace the 42 pin connector from the headset and replace it with a non-proprietary alternative. I don't know as much about the pinout as you do, but it seems like there would be a lot more leeway soldering on the pcb than in any of the super fine wires, and there are many cheap headsets around to work with. If I could get it working with a displayport and usb port on the headset, the cable length issue could be handled separately.

Oh my goodness, thanks for your work! I've just spent about 20 hours on and off ruling out everything software related with my Oculus Rift S... My headset has just died. It was an odd experience, as it didn't go all at once, just began actting buggy and buggier.... Now it's totally failed. I am praying you put out a follow up video to this. As learning from your experience, could help me avoid any pitfalls, and increase the chances of success. What a shame such a nice product could be brought down by this badly thought out cable!

got one used in november 2022, got an incredible amount of 6 hours of gameplay because the next day the cable just stopped working, the problems is that day I didn't knew it was the cable, so in the course of 8 months I looked, asked and tried EVERYTHING to see what the problem was, all of that to finally narrow it down to "yeah I have to get the 80 usd cable". getting it next week but is great that a video like this exists.

@@AngeloT2001 It wasn't meta who designed it, it was lenovo. All engineering rights goes to them while oculus/meta worked on the software. Lenovo chose not make schematics and diagrams for the cable because the fiber optic technology were proprietary and patented.

We need instructions on how to replace optics with copper or how to eliminate the factor of one wire and make two, ordinary ones. For example, insert a regular HDMI but have a second soldered USB.

Great video, stumbled upon it a bit late. But recently I got off work and am trying to repair this cable, I ran over it with my chair. Yeah, jezus. And I can't seem to distinguish USB from DisplayPort. Do you have any blueprint or notes that would tell me which wires go from the headset connector to the splitter, which are the USB cables. Because when I plug the headset in it says "Sensors, not working, faulty USB 3.0" Soo... I probably crushed a USB cable. But for the life of me I don't know which is which. I'll try to strip down the USB cable and maybe figure out which cables are going there. The optic seems fine, no bent or faded color in the semitransparent white shell. The ground wire is a bit flattened but it looks fine ish.

@@TheDigitalOrphanage I understand. As fare as i know there is a circuit near the connector on headset side. In your opinion, is it possibile to solder a USB and a HDMI female connector immediately after that, in order to use normal cables? I also don't understand at what point of the cable the optic fiber is converted into copper

There is a resin sealed circuit in both the Y combiner and the headset plug end. I'm at the soldering point and trying to build up the courage to attempt some pretty delicate soldering before I find out whether my wiring diagram I've deduced is worth the paper it's on! 🤔
