Thanks. @monoham1 for lending me his DK2 and Quest.
This video was a passion project that I had been putting off for some time. For the past two months, I kept telling myself that I just needed one more week to complete it. Although the video is not perfect, I finally had to let it go and share it with the world. There were so many things I wanted to add and change, but at some point, you have to release your creation into the world. Even if I worked on this video for another year, I still wouldn't be satisfied with it.
Originally, the video was five hours long, but I managed to cut it down to two hours and then one hour. The project was enormous, and my head was full of VR stuff. I had 506GB of raw footage, and my Davinci Resolve project was so massive that it kept crashing. To manage it, I had to divide it into nine separate projects, but even then, they would still crash. During the shooting, my camera broke halfway through, and I had to use a replacement camera with a buzzing microphone, so I had to dub over the footage. The audio mixing was a nightmare, with more than 10 different audio inputs and mics and nine projects to mix, but I finally got there. I had a blast learning about VR and the history of oculus. This video was so much fun and challenging to make.

It's more like, Valve and more specifically Gabe Newell could see the potential that VR had, and how far Oculus would have to go from what they were shown. this really makes me have a new found appreciation for how far the tech has come, i remember in middle school my friends and I attempting to pool together a years worth of savings between all 3 of us only for none of our parents wanting to trust kickstarter, in hindsight im kinda glad as the DK1 probably wouldn't have been what we were after, but its insane to see how far its came in like a decade, id argue not even phones have gone through as big improvements (i mean with VR we went from no DOF to 6DOF full body tracking WITH hand tracking, with phones we went from what? touch screen with stylus to touch screen with finger?) its sad that the original oculus founder got thrown out, seems to be mark's kink really, but im also glad we got to have the quest and quest 2
What an amazing video. I got into VR with psvr1. Got quest 2 but i really feelt like I missed that golden pcvr days meta had with rift and rift s. So i got myself an used rift and rift s. As someone who had a Rift CV1 when they first came out, you should really play Robo Recall, the graphics were and still are way ahead of it's time, it's basically on par with Alyx's quality but released way back when the only headsets you could play it on had resolutions that couldn't even see all the game's detail. It's a gem, really.

update for quest 3?
I started off with a cv1 and Rift S almost 4 years ago now and have I'd say 3000hrs+ in vr, it certainly has evolved a lot since then!

Yeah its insane the evolution! Damn i wish oculus still made PC VR headsets haha
awesome video, would love to see more details on the dk1 and dk2 setup since most of that software has been lost to time.

The picture from the dk1 shows a lot of progression off the original headsets, weird to see how far it went in so little time then the internal development taking another like 2 decades to match

If you liked how half life 2 looked on vr, theres actually a mod on steam that allows you to play all of half life 2 (plus the episodes) in full 6dof with motion controls, its absolutely amazing
A single donation might steered entire vr industry downhill because of cancel culture. What a time to be alive... Actually let's see how quest 3 performs

The good enough passthrough in the quest 3 is a big difference for the casual users and opens possibility's for games! Quality overall is very good but indeed nothing special comparing to the more expensive headsets. Altough price vs quality they are the best in te market right now in my opinion !
Palmer seems like an awesome guy??? Trump supporter who is now devoted to border control.... Ye what a cool guy
This video is so well built and is fantastic. I'm honestly surprised you don't have at least a few hundred thousand subscribers

DK1 was my first good VR experience, then CV1, then Rift S (also the first headset that was mine, DK1 and CV1 I used at the local sim racing center, quite often). Now I have a PICO 4, considering the Q3.. I like the PICO but the Oculus (now Meta 🥲) interface is just better...
I like how you incorporate the history of oculus with this video.
I got my DK1 almost 10 years ago. I kept up with the Oculus headsets until Facebook required a facebook account. Now I have several current HMDs but nothing will compare to putting on my first DK1. Such a rush!
i still remember the day my dad brought home a gear VR. and soon after started watching youtubers play on the oculus rift. it was such a dream to have tasted VR and see people enjoying it. i was beyond excited when i got my hands on the first oculus quest, i'd play it so much i'd get all sweaty from moving around so much. now with the quest 3 i without a doubt dub it one of my favorite pieces of gaming hardware
I own the Oculus Rift and it’s great, the only downside and reason I replaced it was because it was old and was restricting the amount of games I could play
The quest is great, it was the first (and currently only) vr set I ever had, so great, no setting up cameras or anything and I can even use it with my pc to play so I have more options
Great video! My first headset was the Quest 2 but the Quest Pro is by far the best for me. Love playing Ultra Wings 2

Insanely entertaining vid man, liked and subbed. You’ll have to remake it soon though, Quest 3 drops next Tuesday, Oct. 10th! 😂
Fun fact! At 43:48, you can actually get this old menu back by using the Oculus Link to your computer. "This is the default menu for pcvr"
in 2013 i saw an italian youtuber testing dk2 with hydra controller and half life 2 with full motion controller support, it blows my mind at the time. it blows my mind nowadays too so...
I honestly love videos like this
You should make more videoessays like this like: The history of VR or (Video essay title about anything you like)

I got to try the dk1 back when it came out, I've been a huge fan of vr ever since.
Absolutely loved the video and love the great content, thx for taking the time to make this great content for us!😀
I've just ordered the quest 3, so this video was super interesting, my last vr was the gear vr but they did a phone update on the Samsung that totally disabled the use of the software so the who gear vr became a paperweight and I only got to use it a few times.
As an early adopter.... ex-too-early-nobody-knowsVR-back-thenYTber...now career changed to IT and game developing hobbyist -> thank you for this video from the bottom of my heart! It is called preservation of what was []-D And you did it in a perfect execution :D Kudos to you!
