Farewell Trident (Korg Trident Mk I)

Музыка

I did something I thought I never would - sold my Korg Trident synthesizer. I had only a few days to compose a farewell song with that fantastic synth. And this is what I came up with.
”Farewell Trident” by The William Salmela Project.
All sounds are from the Korg Trident Mk I, a synth that was released in 1980. It’s a mighty 8 voice polysynth with 2 VCOs per voice. It has separate synth, brass and string sections that can be layered and played at the same time. For the strings there’s an ensemble effect and on top of all this there’s even an onboard flanger.
In this song only additional reverbs and delays are used to effect the sound. The synth was installed with MIDI and it was multitracked in Logic Pro.
Show me a modern piece of kit that sounds like this and I’ll buy it.

Greetings from a former analogue synth guy who turned to the didgeridoo as a professional... I still value good analogue synth music very highly. Best wishes from Germany. Olaf

    Great work William! Beautifully composed too. I was the happy owner of the Trident mk 1. I bought it brand new for more than 4000$ in Oslo, Norway 1981. When I bought an Oberheim Matrix 12 in 87 (I still have) I sold my Trident which I really regret, specially when listening to your great "Trident composition". It's a pity you had to sell it, you could have recorded an whole Trident album. Maybe I'll by me another one if the price is descent. How much did you sell it for? Best Regards!

    Hi William, quick question... I was wondering if you could explain a bit more about how you created the S&H effect on the Trident... I understand its with filter resonance and keytracking on, but did you record various individual short hits and then edit/slice them into a short timespan in the DAW to simulate S&H? If not, how were you able to generate random voltages on the Trident? Did you send S&H from other synth via MIDI or CV IN > Filter? Thanks for any insights, this is a fantastic piece and showcase of the Trident's power.

    Okay, this is uncommonly majestic!! I used to own a Korg Trident, but never made it sound this good. What interface did you use to record this with if I may ask??? I only have a crumby focusrite and have synths like a Korg Lambda and Delta and JEN SX-1000 ( mono synth) + a Moog prodigy, Kawai SX-240 and Elka Wilgamat. They all sound amazing with my Roland DEP 5 FX Rack and Ibanez UE 405, but they get lost in translation once I mix them down ay 24 Bit. Your composition quite honestly sounds EXTRAORDINARY!!!! :) Thank you for this upload!

  • @WilliamSalmela

    +Sjobeck7 Thanks! It's recorded through a Fireface 800, but I think the prime quality is lost with the youtube compression. You have quite a nice synth collection.

  • @andinbriwel1092

    @andinbriwel1092

    7 жыл бұрын

    Sjobeck7 Focusrite AD isn't bad, at line level input, anyway. Just watch your gain staging, and don't over-modulate anything going in. Record not peaking at 0dB but like -12dBfs, then level it where you want during the mixing. Use the line-in, not mic-in. You won't notice a huge difference in quality between a focusrite interface and something allot more expensive as long as you pay careful attention to levels. Preamps, that's another story. For mic-level inputs you will hear significant differences from better preamps than the focusrite has - but, even then, you can pick up a good preamp, like a 1073 clone or something, and run the analog out from the pre into the focusrite line input and get great results ;)

  • @WilliamSalmela

    +relis music The reverb is ClassicVerb (TC Electronic Powercore) which I often use for a really spacious effect - when I want the reverb to be part of the sound. However, the short "plucked" squarewave lead sound is layered realtime with the strings with a very long decay time, which also contributes to the feeling of a long reverb.

    It' all Trident (it doesn't have an audio input for external sources). The effect is a pseudo "sample & hold". It's actually the filter resonances of 8 individual filters that are slightly out of "tune" with each other because it hasn't been calibrated (probably since the early 80's). If you listen to it closely you can hear a cycle of 8 individual filter resonances repeating.
