a Korg fan.... nothing wrong with that, but, it isn't the "ultimate" comparison... (don't get me wrong, all of the sounds are great!!... but there are other string machines out there....)... anyway, it was a great video for the sounds these things make...

You're right. I actually am (was) a Korg fan, and the word "ultimate" is a bit of a strech here. Acquiring vintage synths, however, is not that easy, straigthforward nor cheap always. Here I just made a video of the stuff I had in my fingertips at the time. It's a pity I couldn't include some Yamahas I also had at some point. I'm fully aware that there are some great stringers, Crumar, Logan, Moog etc... But a lot of them are so obscure that they practically never show up in the second hand market in Finland. Even some of these synths I bought from abroad.

The Lambda is amazing. Because it has 3 oscillators. One oscillator is set and the other two oscillators can be slightly over and under tuned either side of the set tuning to give a massive effect even before the incredible chorus effect is switched on.

You gotta try out a Crumar Orchestrator and an ARP Omni. Those are two of the very best. The bass on the Omni is absolutely incredible. Also, the trident sounds sooooo good. You really made it shine here.

is it bad that i actually prefer the delta and the lambda over the trident? the trident sounds more "hi fi" but it has a little too much going on for my taste. i love how dark and subdued the delta and lambda sound by comparison. also, im listening to this on headphones and the full strings on the streichfeit made my ears bleed. that being said the trident is beautiful and definitely is the star of the show.

Thanks! No MIDI, and as far as I know you cannot retrofit MIDI for it. I multisampled one arpeggiated percussive synth patch used in this song to be able to sequence it. The main sequence was played live but the audio was quantized. The rest is just playing tight.

Where are the string sounds? Real string orchestras do not have all that vibrato.
@WilliamSalmela5 ай бұрын
You're kidding, right? Nobody in their right mind would assume that a 70's stringer would sound like a real string orchestra, probably not even in the 70's. However, string players in an orchestra do use vibrato most of the time, albeit not sounding like a Solina for sure. And just for curiosity, I have used Trident's strings in an orchestral mockup with excellent results (and as a pro orchestral musician I also do know how real strings sound). Cheers!
@jairkerker28215 ай бұрын
The Solina, surely the least flexible of them all, does one thing very, very well: a shimmering which on a record would easily over-saturize every sound close to its sonic characteristics (graining away Kim Wilde's vocals, especially on 45's like View from a Bridge). It sounded like a sentimental throwback even in the early 80's and though I didn't know what nostalgia was but I sure knew its sound: a slow polyphonic detuning; not to fatten up or go whacky but to emphasize a state of discomfort, vulnerability, humming neurosis, sarcasm or self deprecation. The 505 and the Trident sound best to me in the safe middle, full, smooth and dependable with less focus on harmonic overtones and eroding frequencies I find useful to keep dwelling fresh and expressive. For the latter I think the Logan String Melody II is very well equipped, with its 3 registers able to support organic subtleties evolving into either glorious salvation or heartbreaking moans to emphasize - or being surprisingly anti climactic leads. Sliders of that size are a dream for their purpose, and intuitively located at the left side of the keys instead of above: the synth's layout tells you what it's best at and where to get it. Slowly pushing the registers while holding one simple chord soon reminds of Vienna, earlier Brian Eno if you are disciplined enough to not slide away into a euphoric frenzy - again.
