Synthetic Ensemble (Yamaha SK-20)

The William Salmela Project: Synthetic (Analogue), Synthetic Ensemble
All sounds are from a Yamaha SK-20 synthesizer. Additional effects were used.
Video footage from actual recording session.
The SK-20 is my first analog synth and I have used it a lot for it's good sound. The synth is kind of versatile while not very deep programming-wise. There are organ, synthesizer and a very limited string-synth sections. Nice basic sounds are available but not any fancy modulation-stuff is possible. I had to make this piece before selling the synth - it has served me well on many albums. The piece is not the most original composition but it's good stuff anyway - and it sounds lovely analogue!
Effects:
Chorus: Boss RCE-10
Phaser: EHX Small Stone, Roland Phase II AP-2
Delay: Roland SDE-2000, Delay Designer (Logic)
TC-Electronic (Powercore) ClassicVerb, VSS3

I just realized that the SK20 is this video is the one I bought from you :) I fixed the loose key and removed a runaway screw that was safely living under the PSU board. Works like a charm and sounds like honey.

One of the best synth songs on KZread. I keep coming back to it. Will have to do a cover of it one day...
SK-20 can actually produce pretty complex sounds in realtime. You can layer strings, synth and organ all in the same time AND in addition you can get clean sounds from individual outputs for organ and synth/strings to be layered even further with some mixer. By clean sounds I mean the ensemble effect is applied only to the mixed output when it's on and not to the individual outputs. But you're right there's external effects and multi-tracking involved when the piece progresses.
Simply the BEST music video of the SK-20 ever created!

This is a very beautiful piece of music! And I love the sound of that Yamaha! 👍
The synth is amazing for sure, but... man, your whole track is just pure ART!!! 💖💖💖💖 I don't care if is not the most "original" composition (whatever that means), the world just needs more music like this.
I do not know - if you understand how extraordinary this composition is.
this is great!

Man, this thing has some balls in the low end...Really falling in love with the whole sound. Might have to buy one now, so thanks a lot ;)
Very nice composition and quality production with this SK-20, congrats👏👏👏👏 I'll check your channel to listen more from you ! The SK-20 is the first synth I ever touched in 1981. It belonged to a friend on mine, who left it at my place during lunch. I composed my first synth piece during this lunch time. I published this song (re-made with VSTs) on BandLab some days ago and it has just been pinned as Trending for Classical Music 😂. I wanted to listen some SK-20 sounds to remind me these times and I could not imagine to find a more magnificient piece that what you did, thank you. ❤
wow!! best SK20 demo i´ve heard, great sound, congrats!
This is soooo good William, classic gear in the right hands (yours) love it!
That's the nicest thing I've heard coming out of an SK20 that I can remember hearing...great job and great machine.
This is actually one of my favorite performances from the SK series. Very inspirational to me. I had already Liked it!!
Bravo! I must say you make very nice synthesis with the sk-20!
Amazing! Extremely beautiful soundscape you made.
This is great! I love your original composition from this synth and that it’s from one of Yamaha’s old iconic synthersizers before things like there flagship synths like the Yamaha CS80 and the Yamaha DX7! Very atmospheric and wonderful!
Awesome!!! Really great piece! Probably the best SK20 demo I've yet heard! Very VERY cool! Fantastic! Amazing! Superb!
Gorgeous piece!
Sounds beautiful!
Absolutely lovely tracks!!
Very sweet, love it!
Excellent. This synth sounds great!
That is soooo beautiful!
I’ve said it before, your arrangements are sublime and inspirational.
This is awesome on at least 10 different levels of ''awesomeness''. Nice job 👍👌
You're really getting the best out of it. Well done!
Wow that was really awesome!
So beautiful. I went and got my headphones. TV wasn't good enough. I love the sound of vintage string machines and this is a great one 👍

Great piece of music .....well done !
Really great demo !!
Sounds amazing!
So beautiful...
Great. One of the best multi-tracked synth demos I've seen in quite some time. I also dabble with that from time to time btw. :)
A very nice piece of music. For some strange reason it took me over 6 years to discover this track here on KZread.
brought a tear to my eyes man damn u
Wooooow what a cool piece of music and sound !!
Great synth, great sounds, great music, great musician! 😊
Great stuff. I love one-synth demos!
Awesome sounds!! 👏👏
Awesome track.
The chords in the beginning are made with sound layered with SK-20 in realtime. However there are some effects involved. SK-20 has only ensemble and tremolo effects built in, so if I remember correctly I layered mixed output (with ensemble on) with clean separate output that ran into an external chorus unit (Korg SDD-1200). Quite possibly there's also the Roland SDE-2000 delay in the signal chain as I use it all the time. Later added some reverb, naturally.
прекрасный синтезатор.... звучит потрясающе, конечно!
Beautiful.
I don't know what to say. This is really excellent, amazing, superb, great.
Very good song! This video made me buy a Yamaha SK50d so I could get all the beautiful sounds.
Excellent!!!!
Love it, love it!
the flame of atention my friend, very niceee
Great performance and nice synth !
Awesome demo and I love the music. Good work! 😊 Is the music yours? It reminds me a lot of Vangelis and Jarre. Are your music on Spotify?

Super nice music! Nice synth also!
Cool! Congrat!!!
Amazing!
I see you have rearranged some of the caps for the sliders. This video has inspired me to play my SK20 more. This is a good video.

Very nice track. Yes, you other SK owners can get a nice fat sound like this. I have found that to get a fuller sound on my SK20, what helps is: 1) Set up your preferred levels of organ + strings + poly 2) Take the mixed output into one channel of a mixing desk 3) Take the dry poly-synth into another channel 4) Apply external echo, delay, reverb etc as you please to the *mixed* out signal from the SK 5) Apply ensemble on the SK to the poly-synth 6) On the desk, bring up the dry poly level (which doesn't get ensemble effect added) above the mixed level This is to get the advantage of the ensemble (nice washy effect of the strings) without the 'phatness' reducing side-effect it has on the poly. I hope this makes sense... but essentially what I am getting at is that the separate poly output does not go through the ensemble which cuts out a lot of the crisp fat tones. So just combine that with the mixed output (which also has the poly with, if you choose, ensemble effect added)
Love the broken key
awesome!!
That's cool!!!! Sound is like Latvian band "Zodiaks". "Zodiaks " uses Yamaha SK50D and ARP Omni...
Phat Demo! Thanx! I wanna have this SK
Great job on the track! :-)
This goes so hard.
Acojonante Maravilloso
very nice indeed
nice work, man I just got one of these and I plan to use a similar workflow, but I have to up my game after seeing/hearing this :-)
Ini sngat menakjubkan Sya suka sekali
Wow... very nice
Nicely done!!! (radlers - SK50D dude here)
отличный синт!
I'm back for another listen! :-)
Awesome
Epic!
it's a pretty awesome beast - and you managed to get some amazing sounds out of it in this! impressive - there's a lot here that i haven't managed to milk out of mine but your video inspired me to attempt to copy some of your setups and see what other sounds i could find. cheers!
Wow this is amazing. I used to drool over this synth when it first came out, saw pictures in Electronic and music maker magazine. Bet it weighs a ton, but what a great thick sound. Wonderful.
nice sound out of that SK, and nicely played. These SK's are sadly overlooked.
The sounds in the intro logo stuff are from a Roland RS-505 Paraphonic, but all sounds in the piece are from SK-20.
Amazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fucking amazing
awesome demo - you are selling me on one of these!! :o
We're not worthy! We're not worthyyy!
bravo ;)
Nope,Brock Davisson, the one on sale in Columbus is mine. Still not sure if I really want to sell it though, especially after listening to this demo.
