Fantastic Fictional Fight Scenes #5 MMA coach watches Attack On Titan again. BJJ in Anime

Спорт

Shanghai based MMA coach Ramsey Dewey (and ringside fight commentator for Kunlun Fight Combat League) watches and reacts to another fight scene from Attack on Titan. This time Eren uses multiple jiu-jitsu techniques against Reiner, the armored titan. After the commentary, the coach breaks down the techniques in the gym and takes a closer look at what worked, what didn’t, and why.

@@john-paulscott5171I'm not the guy you asked but, pros are good kicks and timing with a decent ability to blitz punches and some pretty good conditioning for your fist and stuff. Cons are limited low kicks, punching, and the grappling will not get you far at all that needs to be supplemented. Me personally I love mma because you can take the pros from them all. I hate how people nowadays try to compare traditional martial arts with mma because they are the same thing one just includes everything else too. Not that I was talking about you I'm just talking I guess.

@@john-paulscott5171 There's really nothing wrong with karate techniques. There's a lack of emphasis on low kicks, but it's not hard to transition karate side and round kicks to shoot for the legs with a bit of kickboxing or MMA training. It's harder to kick high than it is low. Karate generally always lacks decent grappling unless you're learning from a school that incorporates jujutsu, and even then the techniques tend to be bad and aren't used in sparring. The advantages to karate are mostly common to other martial arts but one thing that it (and other styles with high kicks) really help is adding flexibility and good balance when kicking. It's something you generally don't train as much in MMA because of the lack of emphasis on high kicks.

What's cool for me in this scene is that the giant naked man is basically not even a white belt. The way the anime goes is that he just picked up some jits on the fly from his friend when he was getting smashed during sparring. Rhiner is superior at striking, wrestling/tackling, is more durable and had more experience in standup and controlling his transformed form. Thus, Eren uses bjj in the correct way - removes his potential for explosive movement by getting the fight to the ground, controlling the position and applying submission holds. This is realistic. Doing a bit of jits against someone who has never done it, can be a significant advantage. We all remember that first time we rolled and got that fish-on-dry-land kind of a feeling. The fact his form is sloppy is great. The fact his opponent gets out because of the slopyness is great too. Sloppy while being in line with the story also makes the fight slightly more raw which is also great as they're after all these giant monsters. First time I've seen this fight I was amazed that this is in a cartoon. It is one of the the best for sure. I hope we get to see more and more realism in fights on screen in general.

When considering how hard it has to be to animate accurate fights, something I rarely see in anime in general, the fight was really fun to watch. Most action anime try to mimic Dragon Ball Z in a lazy way of just doing Lightning Kicks, Hudred Hand Slaps (with fists), and then a big move. Or this: dash into each other -> clash -> swinging weapons -> push each other back -> big special move -> dash... repeat. One of the few fight scenes that still hold my interest is from Outlaw Star against the main villain at the end. There are other fights that avoid the DBZ thing, but either they are super acrobatic, rotoscoping famous movie scenes (those cool Naruto fights... yeah), or they animate them into 3D (like Baki 2018). Technical fight scenes in anime hold my interest the hardest.

I actually think it's really cool that there were accurate technical failings in eren's technique. Because they added another sense of realism to the fight scene, and he never formally learned how to fight prior to the scene, he was just trying to mimic a girl who whooped his ass earlier in the series. So it'd make sense that it wouldn't be perfect.

The only thing I think it's worth mentioning is that Eren isn't trying to choke Reiner. Titans can't be choked, they don't have biological functions like blood flow, breathing, and digesting. The characters don't transform into titans per se, their human selves are inside the titans, like, say, giant flesh mechas. Eren is trying to break Reiner's armor so that his nape is exposed. That is where Reiner's real, human body is. If the nape is exposed, any of the other characters who are watching the fight can come in and slash Reiner there to kill him.

I'm sure others have brought this up, but one thing to remember is that the titans don't need to breathe. So any kind of choke that relies on the opponent passing out due to blood or oxygen deprivation wouldn't work. Regardless, the way you broke down each scene was so cool. You've got a new subscriber!

  • @eduardoperi9897

Hey man, the thing about this is that titans can't get ko'd, the only way to kill them is to cut the nape off, or killing the person inside the titan (which is technically in the nape) so many things are kinda modeled around that, still its also an anime so they exaggerate a lot of stuff

For a martial arts enthusiast that doesn't actually have any martial arts experience, the fight in the anime looked pretty good, but there are so many nuisances you would miss unless you have real martial arts experience and knowledge. Thank you for making this analysis and this series on fictional fight scenes! Hopefully this will bring more views to your channel Ramsey!

So far that placement of the wording on the thumbnail has prompted about a hundred people who apparently come from cultures that read from right to left to write that exact same comment, which has boosted the visibility of this video on KZread searches substantially, which has lead even more people to write the same comment over, and over. On every KZread video with a meaningful number of comments, there’s always one specific comment that keeps getting repeated over and over again by the masses.
