MMA Manga: More legit than you think! Coach analyzes “All Rounder Meguru”

Спорт

Because you demanded it, and because for some reason you guys can't seem to get enough of seeing someone who doesn't watch anime react to Japanese cartoons: Shanghai based MMA coach Ramsey Dewey reads the Mixed Martial Arts themed manga “All Rounder Meguru”. A viewer asked how realistic is the martial arts training and technique depicted in this Japanese comic book about Shooto fighters. And the answer? More than you might think.
This video features original music by Ramsey Dewey

That's nice, even though we don't actually see much from her or others' proper fighting. Not like it's a problem, I would absolutely take anyday everyday series already like AoT with (naturally so too) limited but legit and good fighting and techniques instead of maaaany series, classic, old and not (even korean Manhwa, Webtoons and whatnot like Girls of the Wild's, and not because girls blast guys without problem, at least something like The Breaker and its similar fantasy series like Tenjo Tenge don't want to depict a legit picture and scenario of real martial arts), with bullshido, crap mentality, myths or overall pure misconceptions and overblowing of TMA, Krav Maga, ''secret fighting styles!'', ''Ninjutsu!'', so basically polluting things that make the comics as damaged as cinema and films, in that sense.

You should try Teppuu. Its another MMA manga, only the protagonist is 5.9 tall, genetically gifted, and naturally athletic girl, who never faced any real challenge, no matter what sports discipline she chose to participate in, even in some traditional MA. That is until she gets introduced to the world of MMA, where she gets her first taste of defeat, humiliation, and struggle; and at the hand of a BJJ practitioner no less.

This series is spectacular. The way the characters develop is nicely grounded. You can't merely "power up/go berserk" to succeed. You'll have to make mistakes and be human to experience growth. I'm so glad I read this series before starting MMA. Saved me from becoming "that guy" or looking like Maki. The technical breakdowns/choreography even helped me lot with grips/sweeps.

Been enjoying this manga for a while now. For what it's worth, I believe they said Maria came from Holland to coach at their gym, mostly as a kickboxing coach - which is a big reason why the other coaches weren't sure if she could handle Maki. A lot of the manga deals with technical aspects, of grappling in particular. Though there are a couple of strikers, including the foil of the main character who has an uppercut he uses in the clinch that seems to rattle guys pretty well. It's in Chapter 47, part of a fight that starts at Chapter 44. It'd be cool to see this one covered again sometime, I think the author has a real interest in MMA/Shooto.

  • @Philweasel

    @Philweasel

Apparently Maria is a multiple time Dutch kickboxing champion, which is a pretty big deal. I noticed that while she's tiny compared to Maki she later demonstrated the ability to repeatedly poke the girl in the boob pretty much at will while evading all of Maki's own attacks... while DRUNK. If Maria had actually made this a striking match I think she would have flattened Maki pretty quickly. ...and being unfortunately realistic, she still almost loses to Meguru, just because a single, poorly blocked punch almost puts her down.

@@jangwa2000 Holy land is one of those Mangas that tries to make a niche by injecting elements of realism. However it's research/ experience applied to constructing the fights pales in comparison to Teppuu and All Rounder Meguru. The worst example was how he stepped behind a telephone pole in order to negate a karateka. He literally stepped into a wall with nowhere to move. Any normal person would just step around it and pound him in the corner. His development as a fighter and character was uninteresting and redundant with the constant "emo-ness". In summary, the writer wasn't as good a storyteller and didn't put as much thought as some other authors. I know I sound like a hater but it's easier to explain things bluntly haha. Peace

I have a bad habit of giggling when I get frustrated or confused, which makes me look like a complete A-hole when I’m learning something new. I also know that the beginner mindset is best to excel at martial arts, grappling for the first time sucks. Don’t get me wrong, it’s very humbling but unlike with striking there’s no escape. Whenever someone spars for the first time in our tkd school they usually get frustrated but are smiling in the end because they’ll still feel like they held thier own, even if they didn’t, but the first time I rolled with a friend who does mma it sucked! Not only do you get manhandeld and tossed from one side too the other, but you don’t get too do anything in retaliation. Even a complete novice can get a lucky shot in, but grappling against someone who knows what they’re doing feels like being a kids play doll.

@@Aman-cb1pt Accept it as inevitable. For the first time, make it your goal to try to keep an even rate of breathing and to stay calm. Try to grapple back, but only to get the ball rolling. Then, as you are getting manhandled every which way, *PAY ATTENTION.* Try to soak in as much information as you can about what the other guy is doing from your relative position as you can. How did he get you into the position your in right now? Where is he at, physically, right now? What is he doing to keep himself safe, while keeping you under his control? Again, this will only really work if you drop your ego and try to stay calm and aware, even as you're floundering in the water, so to say. Which is why breathing works so well. And every so often, move around. See where you can move to, if you can move anywhere at all. And if it ends in submission? Great, then you tap and resume. If you get the chance, and if you did well to remember some things worth asking, then ask your partner about what you observed so he can clarify and demonstrate. Then you'll start to build a foundation.

I wouldn't call shooto rules "safer", no elbows is pretty standard in any form of amateur MMA, but the knockdown rule on shooto can be rough at times in long term, that said, the lack of ground and pound make up for it in a way, still, I think shooto is probably one of the most fun and overall best ways to start competing in MMA, I've been in the amateur circuit in Brazil for about 4 years now.

1 I need to read this manga. 2 it's funny you should mention the sunk cost fallacy, I literally just experienced it with someone. There's an older fellow in my gym. We were talking about how, because I'm a security guard I should learn locks for throwing people out. I said I knew 1 or 2 things that work pretty well against resisting opponents and even demonstrated. He then argued that I should try wrist locks to which I said "yeah those don't work what so ever" to which he responded by grabbing my wrist and trying something straight out of a Stephen Seagal movie xD. It had 0 effect he barely even moved me. He then let go and went. "Oh it's just because you're too strong." He refused to accept reality even when it was right there in front of him which kind of struck me.

Standing wrist locks are hard to pull off, even if you are well versed in them and your opponent doesn’t even know what a wrist lock is. After many years of trial and error, there’s one standing wrist lock I’m fairly confident setting up from a clinch- but as far as go to moves are concerned, that’s so far down the totem pole of high percentage techniques, it’s almost laughable. Got to love the “it’s because you’re strong” backhanded compliment/cop out that happens so much in martial arts. Isn’t the whole point of training to give you a chance to beat someone stronger?

Love the effort on the Japanese names, a lot of people tend to give up if they can't get it the first time. A little trick for better pronunciations is to remember that they're spelt phonetically and that a majority of r's in names are slightly rolled so furuya would be better pronounced furruya.

@5:03 man oh man Time isn't that always the worst. There are simply to many different martial arts out there to learn... I'm a wrestler got into folk and freestyle when I was maybe 6.. and while I absolutely love it seriously LOVE LOVE LOVE it... I wish I had another 10 lifetimes even that probably wouldn't be enough I'd love to learn them all... not to fight but because I find martial arts to be engaging there's something about mastering a skill... I still remember the first time I Pulled a double chicken wing and walked my opponent into a pin. It was magical no one got hurt we were friends after practice but that magic of seeing practice become reality... There is nothing like it and Yeah fantastic stuff. Love the video's!. BTW you've got a good voice have you ever considered applying to do voice over work for animation or movie Dubbs... I think you could pull it off sure there'd be a learning curve but seriously great voice.

I initially was reading Teppu but after learning of their abrupt ending due to the author becoming old and sick, I found all-rounder meguru. Meguru is my goddamn hero man, I love how much he progress in the manga. Even though it's only about 130 some chapters in.

But aside from that i always wanted to know how to break a tackle. it always pissed me off that other guys were arrogant because they knew how to use that move, even though it was the only move they knew. not that anyone used it against me , but from street fights that i watched. they always had those smug look on their faces and it pissed me off because i genuinely didnt know how to counter that. it makes me more interested in learning grappling and wrestling. or whatever you'd call ground fighting. it looks fun too.

Take actual classes if you can cause just knowing the theory won't help as much as practice, but look up "how to sprawl" on KZread and plenty of people talk about it. Make sure the person you're watching is an actually skilled grappler or wrestler though. Strikers talking about "anti-wrestling" or "anti-grappling" don't know what they're talking about. The only "anti-grappling" is better grappling (or at least being good enough to nullify their attack till you can do yours).

Ramsey made a video on that topic, already. From my memory, the gist was, if you already have a good foundation and understand fighting, including shadow boxing can improve your style, BUT it's more like, you keep fighting AND shadow boxing, and a few years down the road you might have an insight, what those stylized movements are actually meant to achieve in a fight. Also, you can learn some basic stuff, like rhythm and balance and so on, which are useful for a fighter. You cant learn how to fight that way, though.

Concensus is that shadow boxing is extremely important. At the very least you're repping moves you need to be able to execute under pressure. If you understand fighting and how people generally react to certain attacks you can game plan and stratigise while shadow boxing.

That's all good to know. I don't have anyone to practice on where I'm at and I want to learn how to fight more with my body than what I've read. I've only been at it for a month but I try to dedicate a few minutes a day towards some practice. Since then I've noticed my kicks and punches coming from my body rather than just my arms or legs along with more awareness of my stamina and muscle. I can feel the difference but I've been curious if it was that useful in learning how to perform strikes. I know I'm not going to one day exit my cave and dominate in a fight and that there are certain things I wouldn't be able to learn but I would like to develop some sort of base for myself.

I feel like it's more distracting than it is worth. The fighter is in there trying to figure things out for themselves in the moment, they can't possibly be trying to process outside information at the same time. During a standoff, I can understand, but they do these seemingly constantly throughout the match. How is it really? Thanks.

Beware coach, this is how memes are born. Loved the video; informative and hilarious. One thing though: 14:43 Very common mistake. A lot of people have a tendency to drop their hands when they do a kick. I've heard some say dropping your hand adds power to the kick, but is it worth taking away half of your upper gaurd? You don't need to do that for balance either. A little bit of training overcomes that problem.
