Great Anime - With Real Martial Arts Techniques

While many movies and anime feature largely unrealistic techniques, some stay truer to real life. And some even teach and instruct the viewer on a few sound principles, tactics and strategies.

Kenich was my first Martial arts anime next to DBZ which has little martial Arts. Anyway because of Kenichi, I now do Martial Arts and I use a skill that Shio Sakaki taught to Kenichi. Aim for the face, then when they block or flinch use your other hand to punch their stomach. This has actully worked for me.

Something I like about Holy Land is that even after Yuu becomes very well trained and experienced in street fighting, he still sometimes loses to complete nobodies. Street fighting is incredibly random, and there's no guarantee that you'll win a fight just because you're a good fighter.

I loved that show. It made me want to get into martial arts more. Yes the moves are exaggerated (You know like how *EVERYTHING* is exaggerated in anime) but the main idea of the show is that Kenichi is not especially gifted at martial arts, he just has the will and determination to succeed which is what I firmly believe is true for anyone.

I love the show and all but kenichi’s character bothers me for 2 reasons. Unaturally nice and annoying (to me) and he’s discriminatory against fema,e opponents. Now you might be thinking but tads dude what about sanji (one piece) you clearly like him as he is your pop and yet you hate kenichi when he does the same thing as sanji. Well yeah. Sanji isn’t the main character so we see it way less, Sanji reasons are far more justifiable due to the only people that really cared for him when he was young where female characters, until Zeffirelli’s came along, and sanji isn’t an insanely nice dude that tries to justify his reasoning with bullshit logic. He just doesn’t hit women because his father would kill him self if he did (Zeffirelli’s said that but I’m not sure if he would actually do it) and so he was conditioned never to hit women. TLDR: I don’t like kenichi because he’s sexist and too nice and just because I like sanji doesn’t mean I like kenichis sexist stuff. That’s a terrible tldr....whatever.

Huge Hajime no Ippo fan. I’ve read every chapter of every issue. For those who liked the anime, I highly recommend the manga because there’s a shift in focus on the effects of boxing. I really like the change from their boxing careers to the boxers themselves and how they deal with the built up damage from past matches. Also if you want more boxing anime/manga, give Ashita no Joe a try. It’s more about the life of Joe, who is a boxer, rather than boxing itself, but it’s still a nice read and the series takes it’s time to focus on the basics.

Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru might change your mind. It's exaggerated at first but really grounds itself, there's a lot of info on how moves work and general fighting knowledge used. The art is also way better than any other Martial arts manga, easily imo. earlier chapters start with ok art, but by chapter 150-200, it's pretty insane. It's 500 chapters long and has a sequel manga that's 60 chapters long. I really recommend it. No unrealistic stuff like in Kengan, just your occasional exaggeration like in, say Ippo or Holyland.

The thing I love about Baki is that it kind puts a lot of martial arts into a different perspective. Ofc it's way over the top in a lot of fights, but at the same time the commentary explains things in a way that makes it easy to digest and understand the situation. Something I liked, when Ali Jr. had his match, Baki was watching. He was asked what he thought about boxing, most people saying it was incomplete, because it didn't have any kicks Baki counters that it does have kicks, but the kick is toward the ground instead of his opponent. I liked this a lot, because it shows how boxing, even though it's dissed by many people compared to other arts, is still a martial art and is just as valid as the rest. Boxers use their full body in a fight, and just because it isn't hitting someone, that doesn't mean that body part is useless. Just like Hajime no Ippo, it also explains to younger or less experienced boxers about how the body is supposed to work. Another thing I like is the quote "what's the point of martial arts if someone who's weak can't use it" This made so much sense to me. Anyone who's strong can fight and win against most people, but the weaker people can absolutely win in a fight with the right techniques. ... Though that guy did force a draw by dying on command so, you know...

Going with the idea of weak people using martial arts, that's one of the things Kenichi brings up as well. One of the first things introduced in the show is the idea that martial arts weren't created by strong people in order dominate weaker people, but rather were created by weaker people as a way to defend themselves from and even defeat naturally stronger opponents.

I’d like to throw two of my fav’s as honorable mentions, Aiki and TOUGH. Both are kind of unrealistic but TOUGH slightly less so than Aiki. TOUGH’s main character uses a fictional variant of what i am pretty sure is Karate while Aiki’s main character uses an exaggeratedly powerful style of Aikido. They both use excessive exaggeration, as TOUGH’a main character is said to have a maximum punch force of 1 ton and Aiki’s main is literally regarded as a near god who had to be nerfed by his own father to force him to develop as a person. Both feature spectacular representation of other martial arts and quite a bit of realistic principles and philosophy of martial arts mentioned.

Shamo with the exception of that arc that takes place in China (which was not bad but hardly could be qualified as realistic), it was a pretty interesting manga anyway but maybe it never reached its full potential due the long hiatus it took due the legal disputes between the author and the artist, the last arc was pretty lackluster, sadly.

@@zefanyalt5944 I have seen some people that think that that China arc was retconned or erased when the manga returned to publication after that long hiatus and some that think that it did not took place inmediately after the duel in the temple but that it takes place after that part when Ryo discovers that he has become weaker (when he was fighting in a club and a random office worker which was a former opponent kicked his ass) and given how tonally different that arc was when compared with the rest of the manga, I would not be surprised if one of those crazy explanations ended being true, as I said above I think that manga was decent but a good deal of its potential was destroyed due the bickering of the author and the artist.

Hajime definetely, it fleshes out techniques way more and actually explains combat concepts, it actually gives you knowledge. Megalobox is a remake/spinoff of Nashita No Joe, and while the drama is good, and the fightings intense, combat explanations are not deep and you don't get actual knowledge from it, you're just in for the ride; it's like watching a Rocky movie.

Kenji is my personal favorite manga about martial arts. It's a manga about the journey of a Japanese boy named "Kenji" who is a practitioner of Bajiquan. His grandfather teaches him Bajiquan then leaves for China and then begins the journey with descriptions and presentation of various fighting styles. Some of the styles featured are Western Boxing, Shotokan-ryu Karate, Hung Gar, Chen style Taiji, Tanglang quan, Shequan (Snake style Kung Fu) and even rare styles like Shaolin Xinyiba and Xinyiliuhequan. It's a great manga that's very popular amongst Bajiquan practitioners (myself included) but definitely for the Martial arts enthusiast and even student

I would love a breakdown of Grappler Baki, it's easily one of my favorite fighting series. I wouldn't say the fighting is very realistic at all, but it tends to be based in a lot of real-life fighting principles (it just exaggerates these principles to an infinite degree). It would be very interesting to cover some of that stuff.

For those interested in checking out Street/gang fighting I highly recommend the Out! manga series by Makoto Mizuta. Good plot, great fights mixed up with real life stories from a guy who went to juvenile prison and try to get away from fights while on parole. Though the fights tend to get a bit exaggerated on the end, it really nails the concept of dirty fighting and tactics, so anyone interested in that might find it entertaining as well.

3:46 is actually extremely accurate to how I fight as I was taught a little bit of muy thai. So the green one is the one I start out with as its somthing I'm comfortable but the red is my regular recovering stance after a big hit it's easier to change foot placement but over all harder to strike with the foward leg. The blue one is something I use if I'm a little more hurt and not willing to risk getting hit again but over all still easier to get a hit in. Or I could be spout bs and I have no idea what I'm talking about as I rarely fight and I've atrophied due to the Quarantine.
