WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I could never be this patient with someone this infuriating. This person behaves as though all opinions are equal and unassailable and that we can't know anything, so it's just about believing harder than everyone else. The rest comes down to "that science thing is unintuitive to me, therefore someone is trying to trick me!" They can't analyze evidence by any but the most simplistic means, and assume that evidence is manufactured to fool them because they KNOW they don't have the chops to weigh it themselves, therefore assuming that nobody CAN understand why the evidence fits the current models. Unrelated, but I'm so glad I don't believe in reincarnation. I can't imagine being unlucky enough to wind up as someone who thinks like this and can never break free to see with any kind of clarity. People like Evan live in a terrifying world they fear because they don't understand it, blind to the real threats who will use their ignorance against their own interests while warding off everyone with their welfare in mind.

I feel so bad for this caller because they have the potential to fall further and further behind in the competitive society and world we live in. Eventually this refusal to think logically and critically catches up in other areas of life and they make poor decisions that impacts them careerwise or financially. I don't know if this caller simply refuses to challenge their thinking process or refuses to answer a simple question... why did they call in the first place? To proselytize?

The hosts soft-walked Evan through this whole thing because it seemed like he wasn't too bright on this topic. It's too bad that religion prays on people like this and doesn't want them to learn more, because eventually, knowledge blows the whole thing out of the water.

Evan's attitude to facts, reality, education and knowledge is prevalent in the US. How is the US going to be relevant in the world in the future with this level of thinking so widespread? Where is the US headed?

We aren’t heading anywhere, we are there. We rank with third world countries in science and math education. We have idiots that vote for fascists to deny others their rights while actual problems grow worse. We spend billions on military weapons while ignoring or underestimating cyber security. The EU doesn’t value us or our opinion the way it once did. China owns a huge portion of our debt. Russia had overwhelming influence in our 2016 presidential election. We are only relevant to other nations because of our bloated military and our unfriendly environmental policies and actions.

A first world country in name only with it rapidly heading to become a third world country. I'm 66 year old Canadian and I remember when I looked at the USA with admiration and fondness so much so that I went to MIT to earn my PhD's in Computer Science and Engineering instead of remaining in Canada and earning similar PhD's at the University of Waterloo. What I wanted to learn and the groups that each institution offered made them both number ones and not 1 and 1a. Looking over the border at my next door neighbor it is like looking at a house that is in desperate need of restoration as most things appear to be broken and the yard is overgrown and the once amazing garden that was once the highlight of the neighborhood is full of weeds and is in desperate need of some tender love and care. You can still tell that the house although dilapidated has still good bones.

Guys.... you shouldn't have asked him about a snake in the sky... Always ask about a mundane thing. That way you can give a specific example of how we determine if something is true or not. simply ask this question. Q - Can a human being run above 22 mph? Then you can open a discussion about how we would go about determining whether that is true or not what would count as evidence and how would we verify that it was accurate. Depending on what they say you, might want to say how about 25 mph?, how about 27 mph? You can go directly to discussing how we would know whether it's true or not..... incidentally Usain Bolt has been recorded at over 27 mph, and hundreds of athletes have been capable of running under 10 seconds in a 100m sprint, there's video recordings and multiple verifications / calibrations done on the timekeeping equipment. The average speed of a 10-second 100-m is actually above 22 mph. You could then be cheeky to make some points. You could say, my sister can run over 30 mph, do you believe me? I didn't see her do it myself but I believe it is true because I read my cousins diary and he said that it was true. You could then make a really good point. You could say do we have good reason to believe that my sister can run in excess of 30 mph? - if they are honest they will definitely say no we do not have good reason to believe that. Then you could say. I agree we do not have good reason to believe that. Is it fair to say then, it is certain that she can not run over 30mph? A - no we cannot be certain, no we do not have good reason to believe so but we cannot prove for certain. And that is all Atheiest can say about god

I worship sixteen blue and pink winged fairies that fly out of my closet every morning at 6:22. I have a deep faith in them. My fairies talk to me and they: • answer my prayers • perform miracles, • fly through brick walls, • promise me eternity in “fairyland” after my death • are able to create a universe out of my “Reeboks.” • are able to resurrect and fly into the clouds after being dead for weeks and • turn my ice tea into a fine lager. Most importantly, they are written in chapter three of my Holy Book “Good News from the Closet Fairies,” authored centuries ago by their disciples {John, Paul, George and Ringo}. Do you believe in the “holy fairies?”
