Euro Spec BMW E36 M3 Track Test & Brake Upgrades -- Part 2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We install the MSport rotors, Msport custom brake lines, and Hawk Street/Race pads supplied by Marcor Performance on Moose's Euro spec E36 M3. E46 spec front rotors are used along with Porsche 996 C2 4-pot Brembo calipers and an adapter bracket that completes a "poor man's" big brake kit, and the follow up track test confirms that this setup works extremely well, cutting 2-seconds off the car's lap time at Toronto Motorsport Park.

    This thing is freakin awesome!! 👍 keep up the great work guys. Love the way 4 piston front brakes look. Would love a big brake kit on my RSX but the stock brakes with pads/rotors are good for the street. RSX is light enough to not really need them. But the looks alone absolutely kill. Always been one of my favorite parts of a car

    due to the calipers coming off a mid engine car it is normal to get a higher rear brake bias, usually people run a stickier pad in the front than the rear to compensate. with same pads front and rear there is a 6%higher rear brake bias. learned this doing the 4 pot front and rear on my US M3

    Adam Contreras where can I get more info about that? Are you saying that if you swap front and rear 996s, the car will brake more at the rear? (in the car that you put the 996s) Or the braking % is 6% higher in comparison to the original on the Porsche car?

    You should replace the rear subframe bushes they are likely to be torn on that age and they can rip the sheet metal of the chassis apart where it mounts. It will make a huge difference and make the rear feel more planted.

    I run almost the exact same setup on my E46, using RallyRoad adapters and lines. Pedal feel is pretty great and I haven't gotten them to fade yet (obviously nice pads/fluid/rotors help with that). Definitely worth the money when compared to most other BBK setups!

    Did you need to remove some material from the caliper to get it to fit under the 17" wheel? Looking to do this on my M3 but have the DS2 17" wheels. I thought I read somewhere that you need to machine off some of the caliper mounting surface to get it to fit.

    You can also get some adapters from rallyroads.net in the US. They make 'em as a complete front/rear 996/986s caliper kit. This might solve your bias issues. You can even get Z06 caliper adapters, but these won't clear the stock 17 inchers.

    You can also do a clutch pedal mod. In stock situation there is a restriction in the clutch line that prevents the clutch from biting too hard. Friend of mine did the mod a few years back and he was really happy with it. On a normal E36 there is also a rubber thing in the steering pin. Alberto Bigboost just made a video about that. Some nice handling upgrades that aren't too expensive :) Oh and try turning those Koni shocks a bit in the rear to reduce that under steer and excessive roll :)

  • @mitchellrobertson15
    @mitchellrobertson156 жыл бұрын

    DP (and Moose), the brake bias issue will be down to the new, bigger front pistons needing to be filled by more fluid than before in order to clamp the rotor with an equal force. Essentially, since the rears are the same as before, they're getting pressurised earlier relative to the fronts and locking up. I'd recommend Moose install a bias valve to bleed off rear pressure, and if it feels like the pedal throw is too long and light then upgrade to a larger bore master cylinder.

  • @andrewd2911

    @andrewd2911

    6 жыл бұрын

    Based on research (from Racers using this setup) , this 996 Caliper does not throw off the Bias that much. The rear brake lock-up is primarily due to an ABS fault (That we think is a bad speed sensor) that is turning off the ABS. Apparently these cars do not like running with ABS off, and it causes rear brake lock up. For some reason BMW has base bias that is front heavy, and it is managed electronically thru the ABS system ...weird

    Hi Moose, this mod just totally messed up your brake bias. The porsche is rear heavy while the bmw is 50/50 so they need a different bias from the factory. Using the porsche calipers you end up with much too small of a surface area on the sum of all the pistons in the caliper. Reducing your front braking force results in too much brake bias. If you need help with the math or an explanation on how to calculate it, please contact me. As an alternative upgrade people also use the e31 840ci calipers. Lol, This is not a brake pad deposition issue! Its not just a poor man's BBK but also a BBK for those that are physics illiterate ;-)

    Moose should do a steering shaft upgrade, like Alberto Big Boost! The factory shaft has a rubber flex disk that deteriorates and gives out with hard drifting, replacing it with a solid piece will cause steering bind. the proper way to upgrade this is with a flexible rod like the one made from SIKKY MANUFACTURING. (They also make parts for s chassis and cover the vital parts of drivetrain components and LS swap kits.) This is not an advertisement!?!
