Episode 32. The Khrizantema

Ғылым және технология

In this episode of Combat Approved, the viewers will see an antitank missile system with no analogs in the world. This formidable machine, which bears the romantic name of Khrizantema, is able to engage five tanks on its own. The designers of Khrizantema endowed it with amazing properties. Firstly, this missile is able to penetrate through four feet of armor - an absolute world record. Secondly, it has no equal in speed of fire: the number of missiles fired per minute is also a record. And most importantly, the Khrizantema can detect an enemy tank in the conditions of complete lack of visibility: a club of smoke, thick fog or a sandstorm does not intimidate it. The program will clearly demonstrate all these qualities of the machine that was nicknamed the "tank killer".

    A small thing at 22:30 on, it's probably only in the translation? That machine is not a lathe! If it WAS, what a lathe does is called "Turning" in English. What we see is "Milling". Also getting inside the work envelope while the machine is going is very unusual, OK for television, forbidden and ideally impossible in practice. Normally the machine won't cut when all those doors are open. I'm a shop teacher! So, limited perspective here. Having a great time as always watching this.

Of course modern tanks use multilayered armour with tungsten, ceramics , DU etc plus explosive reactive armour and the latest" Tandem missiles? latest, a self defence system that can take down the round before it strikes the tank such as the Israeli Trophy system. Russians have already developed a way around APS using decoy's which makes APS targets decoys instead of the actual missile. As far as I know Russians are one of the few countries that really got into APS besides Israel they had Arena, Virss and other hard kill/soft kill APS. I know T-80s variants such as T-80UM and t-90's had APS already in the 90's.

    To destroy tanks, of course. Sure, you can launch the same missile from a helicopter or airplane, but a ground-based system still fills an important role. It is cheaper, less conspicuous, uses less fuel, has unlimited loiter time, and can work more closely with ground troops.

    The locations at which weapon systems are produced are known anyway - at least the militarily relevant systems. Now one can ask why certain properties of these weapon systems are made known in the first place. And that question is easy to answer. Weapons are used not only for deployment, but also for deterrence. But how can you intimidate someone with a weapon system that knows nothing about its effectiveness and efficiency? So enough information is published so that everyone can see what and why not to mess with.

So if the Russians are making their weapons with American machines, I’m sure the Americans can make just as good weapons or better. They claim they're AFV is the only vehicle that can see through smoke??!! So wrong! Most of the newer armored vehicles made in the last 20 years have some form infrared, Night vision, or electro optical sighting systems. The higher end vehicles usually have combination of multiple systems that have no problem seeing through smoke, or weather. Theres also rumors that some upcoming NATO programs for the scout vehicles and main battle tanks have ground optimized synthetic Aperture Radar. Wich uses signals from rader and other sensors to render an image amazingly high resolution picture. They've been integrating the system into fighter jet radars as early as the 80s and 90s. Nato countries like Germany , France ,and the US, even Turkey, have been using these systems for decades now.

  • @SlavicSpring

    @SlavicSpring

    I was reacting earlier to some of the hyperbolic statements from this show. But, I do believe that they talk about the issue with heat disturbance against heat signature seekers. Night vision would also be affected negatively. Now, if an old soviet radar and huge, cumbersome seeker head put on a lightly armored vehicle are "15 years ahead" is still debatable. The undebatable thing is the missile itself. For its generation, guidance and size...it's very impressive. Still, the lack of missiles comparable with AGM-114 Hellfire in Russian armed forces prompted the development of just such missiles. The 25-year-old tech of 9M123 Khrizantema will remain in service until the new missile is developed, tested and mass-produced. Even then, it's hard to think that Khrizantema will suddenly disappear. So, this is a rather interesting show to watch.
