Episode 32 - The History and (Hundreds of Millions of) Watches of SWATCH
In this episode, Cameron and Matt study the short but lively history of the Swatch Corporation. Started in 1978, Swatch was an experiment in response to the quartz crisis, that ended up keeping lots of Manufacture d' Haute Horologie afloat, selling over 200 million watches in its first 40 years.
Shoutout to Ryan and Justin for providing the in-studio SWATCH examples for this episode!

Agreed 🙏🙏🙏
Awesome show guys!
Please do Hamilton history as it was the American Patek and now owned by the Swatch group. Lots of interesting vintage models and high grades movements.

Thomas Wijaya agree! An episode on Hamilton would be great
fun episode, love this podcast.
My wife has 47 80s Swatches, and we also have 2 phones, several t-shirts, 2 pairs of sunglasses, and a Technosphere backpack. All watches work just fine, and everything else is usable. The phones still work great as well, and one of them is the green one like in the video.
great show!
Hey guys, I'm one of the people who sent in the Swatches. Happy to answer any questions.

Do they last a while? I heard mixed things about longetivigy and reliability

All the ones I sent in are early nineties. They all work, including the autos; which have never been serviced or oiled (not that you really could/would). So for 25 year old plastic watches, that's pretty impressive.

fun episode, growing up in the 80's this does bring back memories right into the 90's BBD The time was 6 o'clock on the swatch watch No time to chill, got a date Can't be late Hey, the girl is gonna do me Timex would be fun too, long long history , and important American history in bringing good quality watches to the the everyman, not to mention the Mickey Mouse, The Snoopy, up to The Ironman watches and Indiglo. Would love to see a History and watches of Timex.
Love this ty for all the info! But I can’t find anything on the swatch cordless phone!!

Found it! How did i miss this cordless in my childhood haha missing my double phone the crank calls we made on that haha
One of my wife's is an Irony automatic that has a dial from one of her plastic swatches that broke when she tried to change the band. That one is the one she wears the most. It also has a lightning bolt minute hand; it was custom made. That one has the clear back as well. She just had it cleaned, but unfortunately it is no longer water resistant. She is always changing bands on that one--the plastic bands work fine on it. I think she'll wear it to her grave.
You guys have been talking about quartz crisis almost on every episode. When will you have one for quartz only?
Please do the next episode about AP, I am a royal oak fanboy, I want to hear about it and see some pieces.
In 1977 I bought a Raketa Seconda 22 jewels. I was great and it was stolen. I then bought a Seiko automatic and it broke. No parts available so I ditched it and bought a Casio which had an alarm and a light. Kept that for 10 years. In the nineties my daughter bought a plastic Swatch from a booth on Victoria railway station. It was a fashion watch. A bit girly for me. I collect Soviet watches now. Some fancy designs like the Copernicus watch by Raketa or the Big Zero raketa as worn by Gorbachev.
still have my late 80s swatch with box
FYI - Delirium tremens is the technical term for behavior during withdrawal for alcoholics. All ex-USSR folks know this is "The White Burn"
I guess when the first swatches were manufactured plastic was still new and cool, kind of like carbon fiber is now? Definetly do NOMOS next week i really like their stuff
love this podcast. I listen to it at work then come home and watch it. it kinda needs to be watched lol
My first watch back in grade school was a Swatch. I remember everyone had one and I had more than one so I thought I was "all that and a bag of chips!"
Good show, guys...but you forgot the Hair-hat!
This makes me want to buy a Swatch.

Swatch r us
In regards to your little mention of rolex steel... im sorry but that is terrible on Rolex's part. Spend 80K to have the privilege to buy a 10K steel watch?! Ridiculous
