My first Swiss watch is an Oris. I have an Oris Aquis (the one with the nice rounded hands, not the new one). I'm a huge Japanese watch fan, but Oris is really great value Swiss watch for the money.

@1:17:38 Cameron is wrong about the Non-linear design on the Calibre 113 movement. It's not just on the dial side. The gear is also non-linear (sort of a spiraling shell shape) to illustrate a non-linear power reserve indicator. You can see it on the movement.

Hey Matt and Cameron. Great conversation as always. I'm hoping you can do a followup at some point on the oris 10 day power reserve movement. The runtime alone makes it quite interesting, but oris has been able to add some interesting complications to it as well. I'm especially interested in the non-linear power reserve meter and how they might achieve that.

The Swiss watch statute said that watch companies had to stick with the technology that they were using upto the day it fell into effect. With this oris was stuck with the pin lever escapement. They developed it as much as they could and fought legally to withdraw the statute. When they won legally they were able to switch technologies.

I just bought a used Oris BC3 Advanced Day Date. After much research and due diligence, I’m a new big fan of Oris. Great history and great value for a real Swiss made watch.

The Orisbach, or Oris Brook, that divides the border between Solothurn and Basel-Landschaft Cantons in Switzerland. The Oris Brook is, in fact, not the brook next to the Oris factory, but instead it's a short drive away. One theory is that they found the neighboring brook too difficult to pronounce for an international audience but the emotional pull of naming the company after a brook led them to the name.

The BC4 line with he vertical crown is to adjust the internal rotating bezel. The pushers have some different functions depending on the model. In the case of the model you were looking at it adjusts the hour hand to jump the hour forward or back. Some models use the pushers for a chrono.

Biel is the German name. Bienne is French. It’s like with Munich. Don’t know why English speakers call it that, but its actual German name is München. Another weird one is the German town of Braunschweig we call “Brunswick.”

Plus I just picked up my first JLC from Crown and Caliber, so I am a bit excited about the brand at the moment :). BTW, Crown was awesome to deal with, and were super competitive with their pricing. I also love the watch roll they include as well, great for travelling

The Artilier comp is not an annual calendar. It's an adjustable 12 hour scale at the 6 o'clock sub dial. Big fan of the show!

3 things: 1:The cows are named after Holstein an area in the north of continental europe (germany,netherlands...) not Hölstein which is in switzerland. The two dots obove the o do matter ;-). 2: concerning fighter planes: they are pressurized, as far as i know the breathing masks are to "force-feed air" in high G situations. 3:about oris: with the Aquis and Racing series you mainly have to use original straps/bands because of the lug design.

I enjoyed your vid, thanks for the info and the chat. Oris have a fascinating history and make some amazing watches.... One point though, their movements are Sellita, not ETA. Sellita are ETA clones with some minor improvements.

The "B2 Bomber" on the Player watch is possibly the corner of a soccer field (corner kicks).

Stands out as a baseball diamond to me, which is weird since the watch is made for soccer.... That watch would drive me OCD nuts, the pushes are not even evenly spaced from the lugs on either side

Of course thats the corner of a Footballfield (Soccer for the U.S.) Field. The hand are where usually the corner flag is placed.

You can still drive around Switzerland and notice barns and farm building that have these odd huge windows at the top floor (where usually hay would have been stored) That is a give-way that at some stage someone had a watch (or watch-part) workshop there at some stage. They only had daylight to work by.... Several big companies (such as Volvo) have bus services for their employees. It's a pretty regular European thing. Paddy

You guys didnt mention that in 1991 the red rotor movements and even some before that they where using ETA movements and thats how they keep the prices down!!!! most of the basic movements even the ones with sub seconds at the 9 o'clock position and the pointer ones are all ETA 2836-2 based movements with in-house modifications oh and by the way good luck getting the replacement parts for these where they have been in-hose modded!!

Oris no longer uses any eta calibers. they have switched to sellita calibers which are clones of the eta calibers. They usually develop modules that are on top of the base calibers of sellitas. They have also been making some watches with their inhouse movements as well.

I have the Aquis Diver in the Green face …so cool.

Am I confused? The involvement of Portmann was to overcome the statute so that Oris could progress from pin lever escapements and onward to Swiss lever escapements, was it not? The way it's explained in the video leads one to believe that Oris wanted to continue to use the pin lever escapement in their timepieces?

Oris is the only Swiss watch I would buy. I am selling my Orient Bambino and part of my vintage watch collection to raise some cash and saving up now. In the meantime I have my lovely Seagull Ocean Star and Seagull 819 316 flying wheel to enjoy.

That is good news ,Keep up the great work .Nothing wrong with eta movements of course just bugged me every time I watched a podcast .

For a watchmaker, Weiss doesn't seem to be very thorough with his knowledge. I have an Oris BC3 black, and I intend to aquire more, Including an Aquis and a chronograph.
