Episode 12 - Affordable Vintage with Jonathan Ward
In this episode, we invite the legendary Jonathan Ward into the studio to talk about affordable vintage watches! Jonathan has a long history with The Smoking Tire, as the creator of an incredible array of project cars for some very wealthy paying customers. He is primarily known for the ICON series of Toyota FJ and Ford Bronco resto-mods, but if it's mechanical and manly, odds are, Jon knows a lot about it. He has over 100 watches, and so we asked him to bring a selection of fine vintage watches that could be bought online for under $1,000. We go over several examples, and then Jon gives us his strategy for finding good vintage watches on eBay. Finally, we get an exclusive look at the final, production version of Jon's first ever watch design, "The Duesey," and it's very cool storage box.

Now here's a trio with a talent for details.
Weiss is like me in group conversation. Just kinda fades away ...
This has been my favorite episode so far. I would love to see you guys go through more of his watches
Doing coursework whilst binging this podcast in the background and you upload a new one for me. Many thanks!
I have had great luck on Ebay, I picked up two vintage Seikos, a Lord Marvel and a King Seiko Hi-Beat, I love them. You really need to ask questions and ask for pictures of the movement.
Excellent episode. I could listen to John talk for hours. He's the gritty American CV Koenigsegg. Except without the emphasis on avoiding other companies' hardware.
Thank you Matt and Cameron for this amazing content.
Love John Ward's vision with his vehicles. I'm geeking out and not surprised that he lives watches. He's right for the most part; "car guys are watch guys". Most are easily converted to watch guys also.
I had no idea this podcast existed until PKA, really glad i found it
I'm here for this! I'm a novice collector and looking to learn more! Thanks!!
Congratulations for your program / video, I am a fan of the mechanism of mechanical watches, since I was five years old, in this interview with Cameron Weiss and Jonathan Ward, who has a lot of knowledge in watches, that you did with them I learned a lot, thank you very much , for sharing their knowledge!
You guys talking about watches, in the car show, got me into watches....

Sorry to say but this has happened more than once in various episodes and is somewhat annoying so it would be great to be able to enjoy your podcasts fully by seeing what you're talking about.
Seamaster Bullhead Automatic ... original was 1969 only. I bought the "Racing" reissue with engine turned dial ... #333 or 669. Great watch. Super comfortable despite the size.
Just got my first mechanical watch (Seiko snk607) it’s a cheap one but it really got me exited to grow my collection. Next up is definitely going to be a trench watch. Thank you for this content!!
Awesome Jump Hour Watch And Great Vid
I’ve been wanting to buy a nice watch but can’t justify spending a lot of money on a watch when I’m starting a company. Sigh. I guess I’ll just keep watching these podcasts and plan what I’ll buy when I can justify it ❤️🤘 thanks for the great content

Saw jonathan Ward on Talking Watches on Hodinkee, seems like a great guy.
Hey guys, great episode. I think an interesting idea for an episode would be exploring the different segments of watches like diving, aviation, fashion, etc.

Is it possible for Cameron to handle the mouse when explaining things on the screen? Maybe run two mouses for those few situations instead of tossing a single mouse around the table. Ex: 30:13

Brien Berglund, he basically does one-takes for each vehicle that the ICON team builds. My favorites are the Derelict builds, but he does Broncos and FJs, etc. as well.
I found this episode slightly irritating... This podcast was supposed to be about affordable vintage watches. Literally HALF this podcast was on his Duesey watch. The first 5 minutes was adverts( understood. Gotta keep the lights on) and then another 20 in small talk . 32 watches brought to the table and you talk about maybe 8... I was a little bummed..
Can you guys please do an episode on Hamilton watches or maybe early American watches?
He kept calling Matt, "Big Boi!" Is that an Archieluxury reference?

11500 for the icon watch... id have started like most in the 2-5K range. pretty ballsy but jonathan has a track record of leading trends so maybe he's got it covered.

I think when you hear him talk about what it actually takes to get a small-batch, complicated watch made, in switzerland, using things like Gold rotors and titanium cases, there's just no way to get something like that down to a low price. Honestly, if I had lots of money to blow on cool stuff, I'd buy one. It's a very well made piece of hardware.

i dont doubt the quailty one bit. its in sync with jonathan/icons brand reputation. just was observing that it was a highish entry point. really enjoyed the video and the channel. would like cameron to talk more!

When you were talking about the Nivram, did you mean Enicar that was spelled backwards. Enicar used to be Racine.

I can't afford a sub but I agree, Theres so many cool cheap watches with their own design so theres no need to buy the cheap copy of a expensive watch. The $200 "sub" will never be the same as a Rolex There is some cool homages tho, but most "subs" are trying to get as close as they can to a sub without getting sued. If you want a $200 diver buy a SKX/Maco or something similar, you get a lot more watch for your money that way in my eyes.. If a sub is what you really really want then buy a Casio and save up for the real deal..

Yeah, I was disappointed too. Not all of us had Daddies that were the head of a Multi-billion dollar organization and could collect off his coat tails to afford everything and get into good jobs.
invite Federico!
This is such a great panel... I find a lot antipathy for many modern watches. Even pieces I find interesting or clearly fantastic quality, the lack of real design just doesn’t fire me up. It’s a case of “all modern cars all kinda look the same?” all over again. ...and then Ward pulls out all these fantastic eBay pieces and oh my gosh the colours and the difference in just being a different design is amazing and it’s exciting! I’m gonna have to join the ~$300 vintage watch movement.
On this "Affordable Vintage" episode we see a bunch of millionish dollar watches. Oh well great episode.

Sorna prices about to triple.

I’m concerned that Matt might actually think Muskets were used during WWI
Sketchup is no longer free. Only a free 30 day trial then you're supposed to get the full version. Which sucks because when I have an killer idea every couple months I 've got to get a new trial every time.

I'm not even intrested in watches, I just wanna hear Jonathan Ward talk...
One day I will be able to blow thousands on awesome vintage watches...
I never knew anything about the mechanical understanding of a watch. I have never cared for jewelry. I don't even wear a wedding ring. Been building cars and focused on high end fabrication my whole life. There was never any room in my lifestyle for something like a high end wristwatch and honestly, I'm still not sure a wristwatch is something I'll ever buy.
Please bring John back. This guy is interesting to listen to and I want to see what you didn't show that he felt was cool enough to bring with him. What else was in that case? I get a little down when I hear you speak of your shitty Pogue experience because that is a watch I really would like to collect. Where are good places to look for quality vintage watches like that?

I'm sure Jon will be back for sure, and has several more other cases like that haha. There are a couple seiko-specific collector/dealers on Instagram that have the mintest vintage seiko stuff around. They generally want all the money though. I went for a $400 pogue off Ebay that looked the part, when the proper dealers wanted $800-1000 for a mint one. I got burnt and wish I had just spent the grand on a like-new example.

Only 2 more days until the next episode. I wish you ran more of these. I know it's not snagging you a fuckload of views but frankly youtube seems to not be giving you shit for ads anyways. Which I'm fine with personally. I'd hate to hear this show censored or dumbed down for ad money. Thanks for answering my question Matt and correcting me on Jon's name.

Oh man, U-Boat...talk about a brand that is literally worth nothing once you buy it. Can find them brand new on the grey market for 85% off retail....
Like a rotary engine 😂 this guy has never seen a rotary
You should really just have a general purpose podcast and fuck what everybody thinks.
I really, really want to like you guys ... I love the premise, and applaud the attempt ... but after four or five episodes, I’m tired of too much fluff, too much jovial, empty repartee, and way too few watches. Let’s get down to business!
It's an advert...avoid it. Totally wrong title.
