Episode 12 - Affordable Vintage with Jonathan Ward

In this episode, we invite the legendary Jonathan Ward into the studio to talk about affordable vintage watches! Jonathan has a long history with The Smoking Tire, as the creator of an incredible array of project cars for some very wealthy paying customers. He is primarily known for the ICON series of Toyota FJ and Ford Bronco resto-mods, but if it's mechanical and manly, odds are, Jon knows a lot about it. He has over 100 watches, and so we asked him to bring a selection of fine vintage watches that could be bought online for under $1,000. We go over several examples, and then Jon gives us his strategy for finding good vintage watches on eBay. Finally, we get an exclusive look at the final, production version of Jon's first ever watch design, "The Duesey," and it's very cool storage box.

I found this episode slightly irritating... This podcast was supposed to be about affordable vintage watches. Literally HALF this podcast was on his Duesey watch. The first 5 minutes was adverts( understood. Gotta keep the lights on) and then another 20 in small talk . 32 watches brought to the table and you talk about maybe 8... I was a little bummed..

I think when you hear him talk about what it actually takes to get a small-batch, complicated watch made, in switzerland, using things like Gold rotors and titanium cases, there's just no way to get something like that down to a low price. Honestly, if I had lots of money to blow on cool stuff, I'd buy one. It's a very well made piece of hardware.

I can't afford a sub but I agree, Theres so many cool cheap watches with their own design so theres no need to buy the cheap copy of a expensive watch. The $200 "sub" will never be the same as a Rolex There is some cool homages tho, but most "subs" are trying to get as close as they can to a sub without getting sued. If you want a $200 diver buy a SKX/Maco or something similar, you get a lot more watch for your money that way in my eyes.. If a sub is what you really really want then buy a Casio and save up for the real deal..

This is such a great panel... I find a lot antipathy for many modern watches. Even pieces I find interesting or clearly fantastic quality, the lack of real design just doesn’t fire me up. It’s a case of “all modern cars all kinda look the same?” all over again. ...and then Ward pulls out all these fantastic eBay pieces and oh my gosh the colours and the difference in just being a different design is amazing and it’s exciting! I’m gonna have to join the ~$300 vintage watch movement.

There was never any room in my lifestyle for something like a high end wristwatch and honestly, I'm still not sure a wristwatch is something I'll ever buy.

I'm sure Jon will be back for sure, and has several more other cases like that haha. There are a couple seiko-specific collector/dealers on Instagram that have the mintest vintage seiko stuff around. They generally want all the money though. I went for a $400 pogue off Ebay that looked the part, when the proper dealers wanted $800-1000 for a mint one. I got burnt and wish I had just spent the grand on a like-new example.
