Episode 27 - The Perfect Patina
In this episode, tech mogul and entrepreneur Matt Jacobson stops by the studio to talk about the holy grail of vintage watches: perfect patina. Matt was the 8th employee at Facebook in 2005, and, Mark Zuckerberg excepted, is its longest serving employee. He has, unlike other men of means, put a cap on the number of watches he's willing to own at 12, instating a policy of "one in, one out." We discuss patina, how watches get it and why it's good; we then look at Matt's amazing examples of "Tropical Dial" watches; watches where the black or blue dials have faded to a tobacco or sunburst brown color. Prepare to examine some of the finest tropical dialed watches we have ever seen, anywhere in the world. We also talk about what California watch style is, Matt's taste in vintage Volkswagens and Porsche's, and big news from Cameron!

I want to recommend a book to everybody. 'Thousand Cranes' by Yasunari Kawabata. it kind of hits on the points of the japanese philosphy of collecting touched on in this podcast. eventhough its immediately all about collecting it is the story of a young man realizing why his father collected old teacups and kettles after his father's passing. it's also a fairly quick read. there is a release of this novel bundled with 'Snow Country' which is another great book by the same author. highly recommend both.
Another great episode with a cool guest and fantastic watches. Thanks!
I could listen to soooo many episodes on vintage! Good stuff guys 👍
Congratulations Cameron!
I like the idea of the wool strap, thanks for sharing that.
+1 on the Cape Cod cloth. I was actually polishing the centre links on my GMT with one while watching this as you mentioned it! They work great, and yes, they do smell nice!
Great episode, thanks. Excellent knowledge here!
Congrats! Fatherhood is incredible, especially of a little girl. Amazing stuff really.
Great show Cameron and Matt!!!
This was another great episode guys. Thanks for making it for me. lol
It's not a watch and listen episode if Matt doesnt forget to show a picture everyone is talking about

Also that merino wool strap reminds me a lot of my Berfine leather strap. Its much cheaper but has some similar design. Same basic buckle, spring bar sheath, and really comfortable. I'm tempted to buy a merino but at $60ish it's hard to justify when my most expensive watches are around 350 lol

James Fonda There is a reason the show’s host isn’t generally also in charge of those duties.

The royal oak and the nautlius are my grails, just beautiful...
Excellent episode! So, do you recommend using Cape Cod to remove the scratches of an acrilic cristal? (Speedy)
That daytona looks perfect!
Props on the w123 wagon, mine came from CT too. Mine was faded hyundai purple but now its flat teal and slammed on porsche rims. Mines a 300td wagon also, and veggie oil ruined mine before i bought it hence why i got it so cheap. My profile pic is of the benz btw
A man's man. Great cool guy.
Love vintage!
I've had a trayvax wallet for years. I love it. !
I'm not personally into vintage stuff but this episode was really cool and the guest was quite interesting to listen to.
YES!
I love that Daytona
That Trayvax Summit is bad-ass. Only available in saddle brown now, though. Congrats, Cameron. 20 years from now it will be worth it! (Unless it isn't...) I do like the idea of continued or re-use of vintage watches, but I just don't get the appeal of the fade/patina look. Why does that make them more expensive? I'd rather spend extra on examples kept in good condition with slight evidence of wear, but the least amount possible; even evidence of polishing rather than a scratched original. Id rather have a newer watch than one with yellow lume or mottled and discolored faces and bevels. I do agree that mis-matched parts across models is no-go, though. Am I the only one?
I think a Nomex strap is a great idea...could even have the owner's race car number and blood type...
Would you do an episode on homage watches? Like Alpha's, Parnis ect.
Hell yeah cape cod! Cloth
Dude, let Matt speak
People do get attached to their watches. Like for example, if it was the grandfather’s watch.
the AP was nice....
Great podcast guys...you should hire a video guy to help out...like joe rogan has jamie v. This is a very heavy visual podcast with watches and all, it would make the show much better! but either way thanks!

fair enough, I enjoy them no matter what! cheers
Love the show guys, very interesting stuff How about getting some black cardboard and bend into 3 side and put it around you watch camera. Might stop some of the glare.
Just realised a bunch of AP royal oaks don't have a second hand? Seems really weird in a sports watch.

It is the ultra thin Royal Oaks that don't have second hands. Adding a second hand would have made for a watch that is a couple mm thicker. Even after many decades this particular movement is still the record holder for thinnest automatic movement with central oscillating weight. At the time (1972) it was cooler to have a thinner watch than a second hand.
Great episode as always, but less porche and more watch in the future!
A Nomex strap,,,,,, shut up and take my money...
It only took you 16 minutes to talk about watches on your watch podcast. I know it’s not like you have a car podcast or anything so I’m really proud of you only keeping a quarter of your podcast to cars. Lmao
Fountain pens in the modern age is nothing but a huge "look at me I`m special", it has nothing to do with quality or being a gentleman, it`s just "look at me". "travel inkwell"? Don`t forget to bring your portable record player.. Just like 40+ obese dudes with gold watches ruin 911`s, hipsters ruin everything..
No watch people complaining about car talk? This proves car guys are weenies.
