DnD Player RIPS OFF Critical Role Character In A Disgusting Way

Ойын-сауық

In today's episode of DnD Horror stories, we have a tale about a dungeon master that lets his wife make a god tier character. Then we have a story about a player that has issues with his TTRPG friend group, and comes to find that sometimes you just need to talk things out. After that, we have a story about a player using coffee as an IRL improvised weapon. Then we have a tale about a player that rips off Scanlan from Critical Role and Vox machina, and takes a disgusting spin on it. And Finally, we have a story about a player getting shut down and banned from all local Dungeons and Dragons events.

I cannot put into words how hard and how loud the word ***Nope*** came screaming into my mind with that second story the second the prison stuff was mentioned. I would actively shout 'NOPE' as I walk out, I will shout it every time someone would try to talk to me on the way out, and I would block the DM and whoever defended him.

I will attempt to. It is the level of NOPE that breaches existences, branches civilizations, and inspires a collective need to abandon the existence that lead to such an instance. It is the level of NOPE that eventually turns your world into a crossover story as both sentient and non-sentient factors work towards leaving that existence where even 40K or Dead Space are an acceptable alternative.

What's better than killing him off is reconning his entire existence. The rest of the party wakes up from a weird dream where there was this extra member of the party who was a complete sexual predator, and within a few moments the dream is forgotten. Make sure the player hears you say that, too.

Anyone who says "done right" OOC to an already well done character just showed their lower self esteem right there and then! I just......I feel like murdering someone when he described how it's not SA since "SA doesn't feel good!" Seems like a favorite excuse "rapist use to claim they didn't rape their victims since they felt pleasure from the act!" Screw the fact it's long been proven that people will feel pleasure from ALL TYPES OF SEX (I'm being snarky here) so no that doesn't free you of being a rapist POS but then lets be real "NOT" Scanlan "DONE WRONG" is likely a repressed incel on his way to become a rapist! His "explaination on what SA is" was the red flag to me that he's already reach the point where he can JUSTIFY to himself he's not a rapist and is just looking for a future victim at some point! Hopefully the permaban and blacklist all over scared whatever confidence he was building up to "Go through with his future SA" and he goes back to just being a "pathetic Incel" (Whining about not getting sex, but will take a GOOD long while before he can talk himself into sexual molestation and work his way to harassement and THEN sexual assault! At least with the other two he's chance of getting caught and put on a "Certain List" will dash any hope of him evolving into an ACTUAL rapist one day!)

Might be off-topic but if a GM who's looking for players says right away it's 18+ that's a green flag. They're not hiding anything. In fact, on roll20 one even detailed how their play by post game was 18+ and asked every future player how much sexual stuff they'were ok with on a scale of 1 to 5. Transparency is important if you want to run a campaign with 18+ stuff in a safe, consensual and respectful way.

I think to answer your question about why people do this shit in games. Some people have dark and twisted thoughts. Instead of controlling them or suppressing them, they play TTRPGs and force these thoughts on strangers under the guise of "it's just fantasy, not like anyone is actually being hurt". Some people see open concept fantasy as an outlet for their demons, but it's not.

On story 1, the player should leave, but he shouldn't "just leave". He should post in the chat a screenshot of the wife's character sheet and say that he won't play with someone who blatantly favors one character over the others, THEN leave. On story 2, if those are OP's best friends, OP wouldn't trade these people for the world, OP has been letting the problems in their friend group slide for a long time and hasn't been clear enough about his feelings. If they're really OP's friends, they'd understand how OP feels. If they don't understand (or say they do and then don't stop the unacceptable behavior), they aren't good friends and OP needs to recognize that.

People do the things in the last two stories because ultimately, it's a power fantasy. Do stuff they want without consequences. And some people are just that messed up. Of course, they fail to take into account there are other people there too, and they might object, but That Guys are never the sort to care about others to begin with, and tend to shut off their brains to think with their groins, so naturally do stupid stuff and tend not to think about the consequences. Needless to say, they could have tried to find an ERP to do this sort of crap, but instead have to drag everyone else with them into their messed up fantasies.

Why they do these kind of things in Tabletop Roleplaying Games? I'll tell you from the perspective of someone who engages in uncomfortable topics in a way that ask the two big questions, "What is the cause for it to lead up to this situation?" and "What can be done about it?" I have my theories, but this is the best I could answer without turning it into a longwinded TEDTalk. The reason a lot of them became the horror stories is because we're getting better at filtering through our informed vigilance and creating a necessary echo chamber (or safe space) that encountering such individuals who are freshly unrestrained by the unbridled nature of imagination would be quite perturbing and memorable. Keep in mind that the common trend with it is that they came from a shared space or have a surface-level relationship such as friendships or hook-ups. I would advise maintaining a strict vigilance around people who you are acquainted with; it goes double for couples due to the echo chamber phenomenon that is created during an intimate relationship. If it is your significant other, partner, or spouse, then take time to have the discussion. Only you could make the proper judgment with the available information you could abstract from.

1st Story: I would probably ask first if this has anything to do with plot or story-beats, even if the DM doesn't want to spoil the specific plot point it would be reassuring to know that this probably isn't a permanent character. The paladin is the daughter of a trickster god, so this could be a set-up for a betrayal of some sort. Though tbh it would have been better for this character to have just been a DMNPC as to not cause confusion or irritation amongst the other players, making them believe the wife is being given special treatment. A DM in a game I played had a guest come in to play and voice a temporary character that was important for our traveling to a place relevant to the plot. It was fun, cool, and didn't step on the toes of the other players.

None of us had a problem with it: he played his character well, and the DM is a really funny guy, so any time Main Character took over the game, we all enjoyed the story. DM would periodically ask everyone if he needed to pause what was going on in order to have the other players get in some time, and we obviously all got turns in combat. All-in-all, we laughed at the stuff the DM came up with, and we enjoyed the story that was weaved, whether or not we were actively involved.

Never ever have I heard of a need to tell others that you're uncomfortable with sexual assault... wtf? The only campaign I ever had stuff like that in the player who did it was playing a character with succubus heritage, and played it out as slightly uncontrollable and even then kept it very PG. Hugging, clinging, sneaking into the other persons bed. But never a mention of sex, nakedness or hell even kissing. And there was a real reason for doing these things. Sure a world feels more alive when it is more "real", but I figured people kept the same social rules as you would at a house party.. But maybe people are just more fucked up than I think.

1st story - if by the second session you can tell that there is a serious character imbalance, it is time to go. But don't ghost anybody. Without mentioning any name, just calmly explain to the DM that you are here to play DND, not watch an evolving Main Character Syndrome play out with myself and the other party members reduced to the role of back-up dancers.

You know what’s sad to me, outside the obvious parts of that story for the Scamlan one? The creator of Scanlan, Sam Riegal would be horrified if someone designed a character around one he made that’s as horrible as that guy was. It goes against (to my knowledge) everything he is believes. Sure he makes sexual innuendos and similar jokes but not of THAT stuff, not even remotely. And to my knowledge he is super against such things in the scenario that guy was trying to play out. It’s pretty horrible to know someone takes some precious character you designed to utilize against others like that. It feels bad to have a beloved character to be twisted that way. Then again, it sounds like the guy didn’t even make Scanlan so maybe Sam would see it that way.

While I believe that all that kind of garbage should be shut down with a firm "No, that doesn't happen, and you're leaving my table right now, and if you have a problem with that, I'll call (insert proper authorities depending on location of the game) to get this sorted." I also understand that some DMs are "Deer in headlights" when it does, and that's why the system I'm currently working on has a mechanic built in for players that try that. There's an entire organization dedicated to merc'ing assholes who engage in that kind of behavior. Their god is the god of shadows and executions. They can travel IN the shadows. They can appear anywhere, at any time. They have a unique weapon that guarantees a decapitation, turns the body to ash, and absorbs the soul. There is no resurrection magic that can bring the player back, as their soul is absorbed, the body is destroyed, and they're GONE. As they can be anywhere instantly, DM can rule essentially like with Aphrodite appearing behind the player with them--or, hey, why not the Literal God of Shadows and Executions himself? He's a bit insane (his wife and children died of plague when he was mortal, you see), so he takes these things seriously. He can make expanse contract, and aeons be as instant--that is to say "instant decapitation, but feel free to describe how painful, gruesome, and absolutely violent the death feels, because the PC will experience it for eternity." A bit extreme? Maybe. But we're also talking about a system that the first page, before you even get to the title of the system, is "NO TTRPG IS BETTER THAN BAD TTRPG, YOUR MENTAL AND PERSONAL HEALTH ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN A GAME. LEAVE YOUR GROUP IF THEY CROSS YOUR BOUNDARIES." Yeah... I take that stuff seriously, my table doesn't have time for that kind of garbage. And so as I build this system, I'm trying to build tools and safeguards into it to help mitigate it (in no small part inspired by your videos, my good Doge) as much as possible, since while again--I FIRMLY BELIEVE in handling it OOC, some people don't know what to do in the moment. Toolboxes, man. They help.

1st story: "and the wife plays a paladin/warlock" just a few sentences in and I see trouble brewing. Frankly, I gotta wonder how this combo can function at all, since you have a class that's devoted to goodness and order, while being tasked with missions by potentially super evil beings. Feels like you should start out an Ex-Paladin, but I doubt that's a thing in 5e. But honestly there's not much to say about this. Its nepotism at the table. Never used D&D beyond, so I'm a bit surprised you can look at other people's sheets. Nothing stands out as sus. It sounds fairly typical. 2nd story: So OP loves the people he plays with, but hates that they keep added gross ERP stuff into the storyline. Sounds like a group that doesn't take the game even a bit seriously. And the DM's got a girlfriend with MCS. Feels like anytime the DM's got an SO in these stories, that player has MSC. The group sounds like a group of half drunk college students blowing off steam, tbh. Doesn't make it less disgusting but it sounds like its the case. OP, you have made your discomfort known, right? You don't just laugh along and go 'yeah guys, dick in a box is super hilarious for the millionth time!' do ya? wait, you DIDN'T TELL THEM? Well, at least you eventually got the courage up. Well, at the OP and the party seemed to be real at least. 3rd story: 8 players!? Combat can be a drag with just 5, and that DM is asking for early burnout. Okay, at least he admits it was a bad idea. okay, so the girls were new. OP should have just ran a introductory adventure, with other players helping the girls learn the system. Sounding like a newbie that got dragged along, didn't want to play the game and got frustrated and potentially assaulted someone. Okay, not unbelievable so far. and it just ends. okay. 4th story: Ugh, another curse of strahd story. My left hand for a story about the AD&D or 3.5 Ravenloft setting where Strahd's actually... y'know, threatening. Wait, so OP agrees to a game where everyone's not taking anything seriously at all, and is now getting upset that someone's just making a rip off character. Is OP trying to find things to complain about? OP even writes of another rippoff character like its nothing. So group agrees on boundaries, and scam dude takes things too far. DM could just say 'okay, change your alignment to Chaotic Evil' and have the bar maid's co workers take her away. This is not a situation that's hard to defuse. So this guy does this, and the group all band together to get him banned from the server and encouraged a total black out of communication. ... that raises my eyebrow. While it could have happened as said, it could easily be the group turned on this dude and made up the story to kick him, and then used this block chain idea to make sure no one else in the server heard his side. No proof, but very easily could have happened. 5th story Anytime I hear someone in one of these reddit stories mention a player who played 2nd edition I brace for another 'Anti-Gygaxian' 'totally happened gaiz' story. OP's a little hard to follow in the beginning as he jumps from DM to Wizard on the fly. Wait? Paladins have suggestion in 5e? OP keeps saying he he he he and not saying who's doing what. He started this story with Wizard being the That Guy and now its paladin? Okay, now its charm person. Is it the wizard or paladin? I rewound the video a few times and I realize that Paladin is Wizard and not DM. OP just didn't explain it very clearly. Okay, sounds like OP and the gang kicked this dude. sounds like problem solved. I do think that him getting his ass kicked by a goddess (who i suspect OP only put in the maid's place because of Paladin's grabby hands) and told to grow up would have been a better choice but 'owning the rapist' makes for better reddit updoots I guess.

I think the last story is fake. Everything just seems to go too perfectly with the blacklisting and all that, it seems more like how you would write a scenario in your mind rather than how it would actually play out. Maybe if that guy flipped the table or something I would understand him getting blacklisted but he seemed to take his character getting instakilled out of nowhere extremely well all things considered. It seems like he just got banned from everything because the guy writing the story wanted it to happen. Best case scenario it's all fake, worst case scenario, OP is an asshole who instantly killed someone's character, promptly proceeded to ban them and then somehow got said player banned from everywhere all because he couldn't be bothered to establish that sexual assult wasn't allowed in his game

  • @wizardswordfish5875

So when I play I tend to allow most things. Though I tend not to bring sexual shit into my games I don't care when others do. At what point is a crime too bad for a character to do? Like not saying any of this shit would not be bad irl but my warlock breaks people's knees in interrogation. Shoots people with repelling blasts into spike pits. Is all around a no mercy sort. No sex crimes but the brutal attacks like hurl through hell or hunger of Hadar are likely more emotionally and physically scarring. Seems like the shit most people do in dnd involves lots of killing and pain should it all be banned? I think it is weird when people make rapey characters. But are any of us any better. Every time I cast burning hands I am doing way worse than any of these guys do. It is literally melting people
