SATANIC PANIC Parents Do The UNFORGIVABLE!

Ойын-сауық

In today's episode of DnD Horror Stories, we have a tale about a player that can only be described as an actual goblin. Then we have a story about a player's parents that fall for the satanic panic over dungeons and dragons, and do something to alienate their son.

I mean, I'm speaking as a religious person, but warlocks and paladins are the most fun to roleplay out their relationships with the divine or profane. Plus, they have plot hooks baked in- the paladin's oath (and in past games, alignment restriction) and the warlock's pact are just asking for all sorts of, if not moral conflict, then at least external conflict!

That dad and his friends in the second story...that was so ignorant, diabolical and expressing the WORST aspects of zealotism. Just because you don't understand an aspect of someone's life doesn't mean it's evil. Also it is psychotic that some people in this day and age that some people still equate medical problems with demonic attack. That sort of mentality should have disappeared when we realized trepanation was generally a bad idea.

I know, right? My parents were AVID Lord of the Rings fans, but fell for the Satanic Panic, back in the 80's, and made us kids promise NEVER to play D&D, ever again. They didn't burn our stuff, but it went somewhere else. I WISH that I had known then what I know now, which is enough to say, "I guess we should get rid of everything Lord of the Rings themed, as well, since D&D is based on it. Oh, and because you're saying that D&D caused those two teenagers to commit suicide, and we can be SURE that several people who have committed suicide have also read Lord of the Rings, so CLEARLY, that is the ONLY POSSIBLE REASON THEY COMMITTED SUICIDE. It could not POSSIBLY be mental illness, or desperation at having been bullied at school or abused by their parents. The parents NEED to blame SOMETHING OTHER THAN THEMSELVES for failing their children, so they blame D&D, and that makes PERFECT SENSE, as NO CHILD EVER has a life that is so hard that they want to end it. No child EVER has been abused by their parents, right, DAD! YOUR parents never abused YOU, RIGHT, DAD?! YOUR parents can ALWAYS be believed, when they blame something other than their own behavior for making you miserable, RIGHT DAD! Oh, and as long as we are destroying things that people who have committed suicide have read, we surely must destroy EVERY BOOK OF SCRIPTURE, OF EVERY RELIGION, because IT IS A FACT that MANY people, of EVERY religion, who have read their holy books, INCLUDING THE BIBLE, have committed suicide, and it could not POSSIBLY BE FOR ANY REASON OTHER THAN WHAT THEY READ. So, let's go BURN THE FAMILY BIBLE, DAD!" That would have put a stop to the "D&D drove them to suicide" argument, at least, as my Dad LOVED Lord of the Rings, AND was abused by his parents, AND saw that every single one of his siblings found means to escape home SOMEHOW, even if it was only temporarily in their heads. Also, they both had sense enough to follow that logic. I WISH I had known to say that, when I was ten years old. Oddly, when I was 20, my father gave me a D&D computer game. "You like D&D, right? You'll enjoy this!" "Thanks, Dad. Why couldn't you be this sensible a decade ago?" OP's story just breaks my heart. The father not only STOLE HIS SON'S PRIVATE PROPERTY, but destroyed the ONE THING THAT WAS KEEPING HIM FROM SINKING INTO DESPAIR. And the father won't apologize, because he can NEVER admit the merest possibility that he MIGHT JUST BE WRONG. The saddest part is that he's making his son's life MORE unbearable, and MORE likely to end early, because he burned the lifeline.

Now I remember the time my grade school friends and I had an ongoing thing where we'd pretend to be witches during recess- stuff like mixing up potions for pretend people who needed them, fighting monsters and evil magic users, basically we'd be good witches and go on adventures and help people. Anyways, my best friend's super religious mom (we'll call her Psycho Mom/PM because you'll see) caught wind of our games and absolutely lost it. She held an "intervention" for us and invited our parents. PM had gathered all the books my friend had that had any references to magic in them (90% of her book collection, that girl loved her fantasy stories). She expressed her intention of burning her daughters books, but my mom talked her out of it and compromised with "store them away until she's old enough to understand it isn't real". A little condescending, I know, but it was the only thing that would get through to PM. My mom also wouldn't budge when PM demanded anything I had that was magic related, promising she'd deal with it herself (she never did, lol). I'm really glad my mom was in my corner, PM terrified me. I can only imagine how much more PM would have lost her mind if we ever got involved in DnD.

I've heard this one before nd it breaks my heart. I have some undiagnosed conditions (Doctors are still trying to figure it out) that means I am in pain LITERALLY every moment of every day, including when I am asleep. It's been randomly increasing since high school (I am 36 now) and I am almost completely bedridden. While I would never kill myself for the sake of my family, online DnD basically saved my life in every way but literal. It has brought joy to a nearly joyless, painful life nd made life worth living in some degree. My parents are supportive (they don't think I should spend so much money on it though) and I am so grateful as they are my primary caretakers. I don't have the kind of money the OP did so I can't get as many things as he does but dice and other such things are my happy place. If I had all that and my parents threw it out. Well, I wouldn't talk to them probably ever again and would probably not be here right now. Not people of 'no dnd' but because why live for someone who would betray me like that after seeing the kind of joy and spark it brings to me. As it brings to OP.

What he and his friends did was GRAND LARCENY, stealing thousands of dollars worth of stuff, all put together. They could do hard time for it. But he still won't apologize, EVER, no matter what doctors say was the problem, because "he is a godly man, and therefor, he cannot be WRONG about how he PROTECTS his family." Even though he had given his approval, or at least acceptance, of it, before, because you had already showed him that it was NOT satanic, and that it did no harm, and in fact it did you good. Meanwhile, my mother is watching a murder mystery, where the murderer has just confessed to beating MULTIPLE STUDENTS, to PERMANENT PHYSICAL DAMAGE, i.e. beating a young boy's hands so badly that he became permanently DISABLED, and claims that "He's GOOD for doing it, because he is MOLDING YOUNG PEOPLE to be GOOD MEMBERS OF SOCIETY," including "DEPENDENT members of society, because he beat them to disability." And the parents KNEW that their children came home from school beaten to disability, and did not STOP him, because, "Well, they must have been VERY naughty, indeed, to earn that much corporal punishment." And now, after years of that, he just beat a young girl to death, because "she was insolent." I can't with these people. The "I'm right, no matter what damage I do to other people. I am RIGHT, because I SAY I am right. Therefor you CANNOT TELL ME I AM WRONG!" I'm a Christian, but I HATE these "godly" people who use religion to torture other people, and CLAIM that God told them to do it. And yet, if they READ what Jesus ACTUALLY SAID, they would do the exact opposite.

If I ever become a parent, I wouldn’t become this guy’s Asshole of a Father! Seriously, going into someone’s room and jacking their shit without permission (unless actually harmful) isn’t what people need to do! And you especially don’t do it to your own kids, especially after they reach adulthood! Choice should always be in your Grown Kid’s ballpark! But then again, the Fundamentalist Evangelicals tend to be really crazy.

I often say when it comes to people like the father in the second story it can be summed up like this: Let me tell you how to raise your kids, and how to live your life, but don't you dare question my parenting or homelife. I also have to say this about the mother in that story, it maybe your religious view...but there has to be a line you don't cross, and alienating your sick son for no reason other than your husband's outdated views and foolish pride so should be one of them. Nothing, not DnD and not Religion is worth having the last thing your child says too you be "I hate you and I never want to see you again."

Gotta love the cognitive dissonance of this religious nut of a father, convinced his sons new more severe than usual ailments are demons summoned through DnD, yet ironically his sons original chronic condition was brought about while doing gods work in a mission. (Note: This isn’t meant a “Blame god” bitter rant, I’m no longer a practicing Christian but still have room in my heart for the good teachings I did find in the bible and church. Spirituality and faith can be a wonderful thing. But considering how much we have learned since the middle ages about what possession and curses actually being mental illness, physical illness and bad luck, it sometimes pays to acknowledge the hard truth that bad things can happen to decent people with no rhyme or reason, and use the faith in our heart to lift each other up rather than look for blame where there is none. Especially a Goddamn tabletop game!)

Rolling dice and playing a character in a game will NOT send you to hell nor summon any demons. It was BS to get rid of all of that stuff that wasn't even theirs to dispose of. Reminds me of a church I use to go to who thought Pokemon was demonic. I still played it.

Yeah I was with you on the attempted cat murder part! Being a cat owner myself (Nipsy reminds me of my own cat, same fur color and eyes LOL! I think my cat My Cat is shorter then Nipsy! But he's similarly social able LOL) May that Psychopathic DM burn for all eternity (But yeah OP is learning the harsh reality of knowing a psychopath I think it's more her realizing this guy was THIS close to her all this time and never struck till recent events! It's like being the people who knew Dr Lecter for years, and eat at his house, just to find out once he was arrested by the FBI that he was a Serial Killer & Cannibal....and was feeding his guest YOU INCLUDED human flesh of his victims all this time! Makes you NEVER want to eat out again) And yeah also agree, anyone that dares to harm my Cat or my mother's Collie-Poodle "awakens the sleeping giant" (I'm a peaceful large man, it takes a special kind to get me to be violent, and even MORE SPECIAL to make me murderous! But when awaken, those who provoked will wish they just walked the fuck away! I seem to be an "asshole" magnet for some reason!) And I'm serious on this as Me and my mother while taking her dog out ran into one of those "dog nappers" who thought he'd ride by us on a scooter, scoop up Afro and run off, almost hurt the dog and my mother with that stunt! Normally if I'm fighting with my mind focused, I tend to "Care" too much for my foes well being! Making me a TERRIBLE fighter! But when enraged, well "Hit first ask questions later!" I fucking LARIAT him INSTANTLY! You'd think the FUCKING GIANT next to the "Helpless older woman" would be a deterrent! But I feel the Lockdown, Covid and the inflation may have broken a few people's mind to be DESPERATE AND MORE STUPID along with Brazen! I don't feel sorry he's in the hospital for that, and his scooter got wrecked once he was thrown off! He tried to steal my mother's dog, and almost hurt her! He should thank his stars he's still alive (Hope he enjoys jail the POS, neighbor who were friends with and pass by his house has camera's so it caught the whole incident). I'm Christian and I've never understood the "Pray away the whatever" mindset! I pray for good fortune and stuff! But I'm of the "god gave men inspiration so that man could grow proud" mindset! I believe god helped, but the large amount of your success was your effort, god was more like how a cheerleader boosts your morale sort of thing! So frankly stories like this make me shake my head and makes me feel much better in cutting out the church in my life. I am not much of a "organization" type of person and really feel the organization is the problem with religion then the religion itself! Not that it's all bad but as you see everywhere! Those in charge running the organization can lead it well or lead it to ruin (The pastor in this story being a PERFECT example of leading the flock BADLY! Seriously that one who said "god blessed him to have his private jets" really irks me! I view acting like THAT as "using the lord's name in vain" not cursing and saying goddammit!) Father wanted a quick solution and became a born sucker who'd believe anything if it came out of the mouth of "a higher authority!" and I ain't talking about God but the Pastor who some put on a pedestal they shouldn't be on! I see no one as being a representative of the Lord especially Pastors and Reverends only as messengers of his word! Considering yourself a And frankly continuing to push debunk shit that's so many decades (I think a century or two by now) really doesn't give me a good opinion of that Pastor! He comes off as a fearmonger taking advantage of fear and ignorance to get people to listen to him! And you see these's types for the devil they are when "there's no fear and ignorance to blind and cover up their TRUE NATURE!" Hopefully the father in time will cool down his stubborn idiocy and realize he's about to lose his son over something stupid (not DnD but the fact "he has to be right) and make peace with OP. But who knows (he reminds me of my mother, thing is me and her sometimes get heated in debates on things, but if it goes too far, we reconcile and no longer talk on those subjects again! I acknowledge my own hot-bloodiness in provoking at times out of frustration when I didn't need to! And my mother does as well! Frankly the bond and love of a mother and son trumps whatever disagreement with were having, cause I put my bond with family, specifically my mother and younger siblings and now Nephews and Nieces ahead of alot of things in my life! I still have a life don't get me wrong, but frankly I put the bonds I have ahead of anything else because they've more then justified to me why I still have them! I've lost many friends, and have discovered many I THOUGHT were friends were POS like the DM from the first story! But my mother and younger siblings, they've always been by my side and the reason I never just gave up to my depression! Hell their kids also helped in that I bond with the tykes alot! Sure their parents enjoy the "me time" they get when I take them out to the zoo or such! And my cat and my mother's Dog too). Yeah a Code in life I follow is "Do onto others how you want done with yourself!" I will never put expectations onto others that I would not want done to myself and that rule works in Vice Verse as well! I will not tolerate actions I would never do onto others to be done to me either! I have no problem with Homosexuals, Transsexuals, hell you can be those weird "Bestiality" folks and as long as you keep that to yourself we're good! But try to force it on me never ends well! History has shown trying to FORCE people to accept something is doomed to fail in the end, especially if you have to be an ass about it and well, look at twitter and Hollywood right now for perfect recent examples of how this is backfiring on those who still hold onto that! NATURAL is the way to go, I NATURALLY get along with alot of people because I accepted them on my own! So what if that guy does another guy! That's THEIR business, MY business with them isn't that nor either of us expect it to be so! I say this cause I have had a few who tried to force themselves on me in the past! As in "If I'm okay with homosexuals for example, that must mean I am one myself" when no I don't need to be one to be accepting of them! I expected this behavior from homophobes for example, not homosexuals, but that just proves what I always believed that no matter the group or belief there will ALWAYS be entitled POS! Their a guarantee in life, like Taxes and Death that we have to accept exist. And yeah I feel for you, my mindset on my beliefs came from my mother who started to distance herself from the church she was raised in by my grandmother once the shitty behavior started to get more and more noticeable (completely leaving when she was expected to put THEM ahead of me and my younger brothers & sister! By that I mean "donations" which felt more like shakedowns then donations) doesn't help the hypocrisy became more and more prevalent as time passed! I feel for you and hope a special place in hell for those who manipulated your mother like that! Bullshitters deserve the worst kind of hell. That felt sad to hear how your mother prioritized HER wishes over yours with that birthday gift, but I'm sure she "asked advise" on what you wanted and her church somehow spined it as "devil worship" crap and gave her "alternatives! One day she'll wake up and realize she's destroying her life and connections for nothing! Not referring to god but more those she's allowing to whisper in her ears (the actual TRUE devils, I always had a belief that if they Anti-Christ appeared, a VERY small amount of "pastors" and such would see him for what he is! The ones ruled by sin and greed and hid it with their positions and religion are the ones VERY likely to fall for his lies and turn on the actual Christ when he is to appear, or even SHE! As I believe the test would be a "humbling" type of test where you must be humble to truly see the anti-christ and christ for who they really are! Like the Holy Grail Test in Indiana Jones 3: The Last Crusade) Sorry if I got personal, these's type of things are my berserk button. I call BS on the DM. He gave no logical reasoning for his calls and did the one thing I DESPISE a DM of doing! Deciding since their the narrator and god, they can ignore the established rules to get what they want! This is the biggest POS DM as even the other POS who try this behavior at least stuck to the rules and when they lost, they accepted the ruling, even if they bitched and complained! This one shut everyone down just to be a douchebag and get what he wants! That's a good indication he'll do this again when he feels like it, never stick with bad DM's like this, it will NEVER be a one time thing! They've shown it will "Be whenever they damn fucking please and there's nothing you can do about it" with a shit eating smile....till you leave their group that is, then they can only get pissed the logical conclusion happened! These's DM suffer when no one plays their game and their fucking abandoned by the group I mean victims!

This father on the second story always baffles me it just how stupid he was. Thinking that just about anything that was probably fantasy related was d&d related. So you probably got rid of a whole bunch of things that OP had Ian before d&d. And if that was the case, I figured LARPing would have been 10 times worse because you're actually acting it out. So my guess is the fact that the father had heavier influences from someone else. Still, definitely need to leave the father behind. Anyone that's easily influenced by a large mass of group, is not good to be around.
