Cringe And Annoying Players Ruin DnD For Everyone! - DnD Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

In today's episode of Dungeons and Dragons Horror Stories, we have a few tales of players so abnoxiously annoying, that they ruin the game for everyone involved. First we have a tale of a player that won't budge on his concept, then we have a tale of a frat bro that pushes things too far. Following that, we have a player in a Star Wars RPG that doesn't like consequences, and finally, a tale of a player that wants to play a stereotype.

"A hole is a hole" -red flag, red flag, red flag! Unless it's part of someone really RPing the carp out of a deliberately horrible character and you know the person is good at separating irl and roleplay, run. But when it's someone who is showing other signs of being a pervert or jerk like this, just run. I've never heard a good person use that phrase, and all the bad ones are...really bad.

    1. I've seen someone try to play a _large size class_ human character before, in 3.5e. Something about it felt off to me, my best guess is they were powergaming. Powergaming is only fun if everyone does it, and one-joke characters are only good for one joke. 2. ... I am of the opinion that some people should not be allowed in public unsupervised. Please don't sexually harass anyone! And if someone sexually harasses you, don't cover it up, that's only going to protect your abuser and make things worse for you. Your well-being is worth more than their reputation. 3. Hamstring yourself and blame everyone else for your own choices... Joe sounds toxic. 4. Yandéré don't just threaten people at random. Their defining trait (the thing that makes them yandéré) is homicidal jealousy. They threaten anyone who comes between them and their love interest, including the love interest themself. That and the dated lesbian stereotype... could be fun, if they were characters in their own right and not just desperate whines for attention.

JEFF! would be a great character for a joke one-shot but definitely does not belong in a serious game. I have an idea for a murderhobo one-shot in which the players massacre a town full of annoying NPCs from video games and other media (i.e. Noober from Baldur's Gate and Nazeem from Skyrim). JEFF! would be a perfect player character for that setting.

That second story, oof. I had a DM that was, pretty similar to Barbarian about how they handled that type of content, in Pathfinder. At level 2, the party came across a Succubus that he decided to have flirt with my cleric (who I had made gay since I myself am Bi). I reminded him of such, hoping it would maybe shut down that awkward encounter, and instead of turning it from a 1 to a 0, he turned it to an 8 and “had her grow one” against my character’s thigh. Yeah. Thankfully we killed her next session (the gunsligner legit Nut-Punched her to death). Then a few months later, I won a free Pin Up style art piece on Twitter. I decided to have it be of my cleric since, hey, he was the only character I had at the moment (think Underwear model, that’s about it). When I got it, I asked the dm if I’d be able to show him (aka, asked for consent) when I mentioned winning the art. He said okay and I showed it via Discord. I never should have. About a month or so later, we were in the basement of a haunted house after a ghoul npc had been leaving rather, Stalkerish Love Notes to my character (this is a Rise of the Runelords game for PF1e, and there’s multiple notes that could be left based on party relationships with said npc early on. My cleric had a slight crush because the npc had gotten a town priest when I was bleeding out and the party was ignoring me to loot goblins). In the module, the final room is supposed to have a painting of the npc’s wife that he murdered. Instead, without asking me first, and with a player who isn’t 18 yet, he shares that art piece. Yes, yall read that correctly. Most of the party (and myself) played it for awkward laughs in the end, even making jokes about selling body pillows of the party to earn in game gold since we were becoming like celebrities. Still, I was deeply uncomfortable about it. Especially since I had said rather early on in the game (at a session 0) that I preferred Fade to Black and minimal explicit stuff. He had also been talked to in the game I run by other players because he did nothing but make dick jokes (once walked up to the reborn(kobold) warlock that was reading and said “what you reading, furry porn?”. Another time joined in voice at start of session and immediately said along the lines of “who’s dick do I gotta suck to get this started”. Just, extremely rude and uncomfortable.). I left his table in November of 2021 when I got sick with Covid from work and realized how happy I was to miss his game. I have turned down every offer to rejoin since.

Re the third story: As a long time FFG Star Wars GM, I'll tell you that they played the Training Weights wrong, as well. They're not a single weight, it's an entire set. You can't stack them. Plus they're Encumbrance 3. Even if you did stack them, the most you'd be able to wear would be like...5 max? And that's while carrying nothing else. No weapons, or gear, just weights. Plus you'd pass out from strain if you tried to move. Both the player and the GM needed to brush up on the core rules.

I don't get why people do stuff like the Starwars story. Why not have his character make his story arc trying to find these pieces. How funny would it be to go to the tech vender whenever they go to market and ask for this hyper specific item using so much jargon the vender goes slack jawed and is like um, I have this completely unrelated thing, will that help? Wouldn't be fun in the game if he just got Divine Powers instead I am having fun trying to find a way. Currently I have hidden a dagger that is connected to an eldritch horror. It tries to promise me longevity (+my con bonus in temp hit points for every creature I kill with the dagger, the temp hp stacks with itself, resets to 0on long rest) and I'm just like "so what's your name?"

Story 1: Wow, JEFF! really should have thought his character through. When writing characters, the important question to ask is "why?"(I.E: Why is this character here? Why are they the way they are? Why do they believe what they believe? etc), JEFF! clearly had no answer for these questions, if he did, this could have been a great character. Story 2: Karma hit Barbarian like a goods train pulled by three 9F locomotives running full speed into his face. That slap must have certainly felt that way anyway. Story 3: What it takes to build a Lightsaber; 1: Electromagnetic field generator to contain the plasma blade. 2: A material that connects the blade to the wielder (I.E: a Mandalorian Jedi knight, which are rare, could have Beskar incorporated into their handle). 3: A powerful power supply (like an Astromech droid power cell, something that will last a very long time and can be recharged). 4: An apparatus capable of producing a plasma beam. 5(the most important): A Kyber Crystal, the heart of any good Lightsaber, good luck finding one of those on your own (some pirates do sell them on the black market for a very hefty price, but it's better to find one by yourself and bond with it). 1, 3, 4 and 5 have to be small enough to fit in a sword hilt, so 1 and 5 are already very difficult unless you know how to build one. 2 is probably not as important, that's just how the Jedi build their lightsabers. Number 5 is easily the hardest as they only occur naturally in so many star systems and require quite a bit of effort even when you know where to look. Yeah, Joe's D&D experience was doomed from the start, and it was his own fault. Story 4: From the title, I knew Andrew would be a piece of work, I nearly chocked on cringe when I heard his first character's name. OP wants to give Andrew one more chance, I say this: You can give Andrew this chance but give it to him straight that this will be his *very last chance* and if he so much as sneezes during someone else's RP or acts like a child in any way, then he is banned from the campaign with no chance for re-joining.

Well, with good players who enjoy RPing, it can be a way to have character development. I.e. the character starts as a jerk but eventually learns the error of their ways and becomes less of a jerk or even turns into a nice guy. Unfortunately many cringe players just play such a character because it's how they actually are. Or it's how they want to be but have at least bowed to societal pressure to behave themselves normally but see TTRPGs as an excuse to indulge themselves.

after that Star Wars story I thought I would share a one of my own, it's not a horror story more a WTF one. I forget what Star Wars system it was but I was playing A Jawa Technician, and in one mission our party had to dissent an Elevator from an platform hanging in low Orbit to a factory on the Ground, the DM said it would take 4hrs in game hrs to reach the factory, this was to give us Roleplay time, about 1hr in my Jawa got board and decided to speed things up a bit, and so tampered with the mechanics of the Elevator, and speed it up, we got to the ground in 2hrs 30 mins, and were all nearly killed from fall damage, thank god it was a friendly factory as we were looking for a member of Rebels, the party began to tie my Jawa up every time we we got near any Elevator, whether it was on a friendly planet or not. and that's not the worst Wik Wik did in that campaign.

I seem to recall some older RPG systems including deliberate traits that players could pick at character creation that are literally made to weed out people like that guy. Such as "Your character has an allergy against the fundamental forces of the universe but gets an OP advantage to stats until you meet your untimely demise" and then includes a DM section where it basically tells the DM to punish such a player as harshly as he possibly can for picking the trapped metagaming trait.

For example, if JEFF! had been at my table, I would have told him in session zero that I don’t allow PVP, and if he’d started attacking random players anyway, I would have asked him to leave. If I had a PC try to sexually assault another PC, the pervert’s player would be kicked. No is a wonderful word. Use it.

Actually, I’d kick the player of any character who tried to sexually assault ANYONE, PC or NPC.

Why, why, WHY does anyone want Andrew to have another chance? He’s had loads of chances and squandered them all! He’s clearly never going to learn! Ban him and never look back!

Jeff: yeah, he made a problematic charecter, and din't expect people to act in kind? Social awkwardness or not there are social co structs at play. D&D is a safe place to practice them, hence a great place for autistics like me and for people with anxiety disorders like one guy thst i used to be in a regular group before i moved out of state. The problem is you have to be willing to follow the unwritten social contract. Barbarian: this was a nightmare. The fighter was a great guy all around, and barbar was a jerk. I have played chsrecters that were horn dogs but even they took no means no as sacrosanct. STAR WARS: he made an imposible build for someone effectivly on Tattooine on the fringes. What was he expecting? Andrew: yeah, this guy had plenty of time to grow up but diddn't. He thought a game was more important than the DM greaiving over a dead loved one. He cheated. He talked over people. And he made gay sterotypes that would make Fox News think they went too far. Toss him

Long time FFG Star Wars GM here. 15 XP is a nice chunk of change. However, they played the item completely wrong. You can't stack it. And he'd have passed out from strain after a single step even if he could.

*Story 1.* I don't get the joke. I get that it's a joke character, but I don't get how "I attack the party randomly and scream my name out loud lol XD so random" is funny. *Story 2.* Unfortunate bit of frat culture. Can absolutely see how this turned OP off D&D. At least their friend is a true bro. *Story 3.* DM should've stepped up fast. That Guy was the problem obviously, but DM should've kicked them out earlier. *Story 4.* I was waiting to make a comment but then I heard "he stabbed himself with a fork." Yikes that guy should've been gone after that.

I haven't played D&D in eleven years now, and I love listening to these stories. It makes me not regret dropping it. xD 1st story: Should have killed him off right at the start, obvious murderous bandit is obvious. 3rd story: They should have given him a vibroblade.
